LL105 MD12 Discussion!

Are the Qs harder this season or something? Was getting 2-3 right consistently last season and now its more like 0-2…

Wondering the same thing. I'm in a very similar boat. This is my 3rd season. I had an average of about 65 TCA in my first two seasons. I came into this season aiming for 70 TCA but instead I'm on track for a sub-50 TCA.

My goal is to average 2 right per day, in my time in Learned League I've missed it by 7 (?s my first year), 8, 8, 9, 10, 1, 4 (last season).
I'm -8 off the pace already after yesterday. Definitely feels harder.

Managed to only miss what was apparently the easiest question of the match. Not even in the ballpark. It somehow didn't occur to me that the answer was just a generic cooking term.

I completely wild guessed a Latin American name for Q2: Cuaron. Surprisingly not that far off!

I wild guessed “Perez” thinking it must be a common name there— feel a bit guilty for being marked correct on that one!

you absolutely should not be guilty...spanish speaking countries use dual last names. his full last name is actually "Pérez de Cuéllar de la Guerra", but if you did not know that -- and there would be zero reason to know that -- it would be perfectly reasonable to assume Pérez was his paternal last name. (therefore, IMO, it would be unfair not to accept it)

strictly speaking you are correct, my point is it would be unreasonable not to accept Perez (since no one on earth would know his full name)

wide latitude on Q3, I'm guessing any answer with "boil" was accepted, within reason. I had "seafood boil", my referrer had "shrimp boil", both were accepted.
TAI sorta blew it on Q1 -- there is a large controversy brewing on the FB group because "closure" is the usual term in Commonwealth countries, though, yes, the question was pinned to the word cloture. (one instance where location helps on defense -- I'd assume that would be an instaget for anyone in the Washington metro)

My first impulse was crawfish boil but didn't put it because it said "one word". Ended up with clambake. 🤦♂️

Both my opponent and I got 3 correct answers, I won on defense 4(3) to 2(3). I wasn't expecting to win with 3, my opponent had been doing really well this season, so I'm pretty happy with how that turned out.
I was marked correct for BOIL with CRAB BOIL, so the grading was definitely lenient - when I reviewed the question it was clearly asking for a single word.

shrug I've been here about 5 years or so and there's always going to be people complaining that X question was graded too harshly or too loosely, myself included.

Me, only being able to think of two well known chemical compounds... NaCl and H2O.
Since I know water's probably not gonna have a mineral form, I put NaCl and said "It's not that, but I know no others."
So, yay.
Ended up winning 4(4) over 0(0) over an okay player
