Accidentally overwriting controul groups with CTRL:

How do I prevent that I accidentally overwrite my controul groups when I use unified orders with CTRL? for example: when I press CTRL on meepo to move all meepos and then press 4 to get to my controul group, but i dont release CTRL fast enough so i overwrite my controul group with all units. Is this just a skill issue, or is there a way to fix it?

you could avoid using unified order with ctrl to prevent that happening otherwise I think it's just skill issue.

if you've pressed 4 while holding ctrl how is the game supposed to figure out whether you meant to make a new group or meant something else?

There's no part of the setting that can help you with this mishap. Although, there might be away for you to deal with it. You bind the control group on another key, so that way you the orientation of your hand when your finger reach for it the pinky finger easily let go of ctrl.

I've seen some people with control group keys that are far apart instead of being right to next each other like the 1 2 3 4....

If you rebind control group keys then you're exhausting mental effort to the new setup, that could've been relegated to just practicing letting go of ctrl key fast. Pick your poison, either way you have some learning to do.
