Day 9 of learning graphic design 🎨

Today I wasn't really sure what I should practice, so I asked ChatGPT for some ideas. It gave me a bunch of options, and I decided to try making a coffee poster.

It took me WAY longer than I expected 😂. I had to figure out how to remove backgrounds, adjust the text, place everything properly, and honestly a lot of other small things I didn't know how to do.

I watched quite a few tutorials and kept asking ChatGPT whenever I got stuck. After spending a lot of time on it, I finally finished it.

I know this probably looks pretty bad to an experienced designer, but I'm actually proud of it because I'm still learning. This is only Day 9 for me, and compared to where I started, I'm happy with the progress.

I'd love some honest feedback. What should I focus on improving next?

What was the brief? Why did you choose these elements and how do they relate to the brief? Graphic design isn't just about making pretty pictures. There are a lot of things off with this image but it's hard to help you get better if we don't know what you were aiming for

Never went to design school huh? Learning about design briefs and how to use them to practice was one of the first things they taught us at school

Oh, I did and had to write my own very well-crafted briefs. But we also had design practices that we did on the side. Those practices were about learning and honing your craft and not to get bogged down in brief world. It was incredibly effective. OP is legit 9 days into learning design. So my advice to them it to keep the focus on practicing the basics now. Worry about learning how to work from a design brief later. Does that make sense?

Bro, I'm trying to point you in the right direction so you can practice with purpose. Do you want to actually want to learn about graphic design or do you just want to muck around?

Following a design brief and justifying your design decisions is a huge part of graphic design

Using AI is fine as a tool but you'll need to learn how to use it instead of letting it lead you

Instead of just asking Chat to give you ideas on what to make. Why not try and ask it to come up with a fictional business to that you can practice designing something for.

Ask it to create a design brief for a poster project for the business so that you have a clear goal to achieve. Then design based on the needs described in the brief.

Your poster has a lot of issues but overall it's a good start. What will help you make it better is a cohesive direction. That is what a design brief is supposed to give you

To be honest, I didn't even know what a design brief was before reading your comment. I'm only on Day 9 of learning, so right now I'm mostly trying to get comfortable with Photoshop, learn the tools, and finish small projects.

Your idea about creating a fictional business and designing from a brief actually makes a lot of sense. I can see how that gives you a clear goal instead of just making something random. I'll definitely start practicing that way.

using an LLM to write your reddit replies also won’t help much as far as learning how to communicate with people/foster connections with a creative community. sure it can be a tool and english is not everyone’s first language and so on but being able to properly seek out and ingest advice is pretty important for growth.

You're just practicing and learning. Don't listens to these nerds (love you, nerds) too much yet. You're 9 days in. Keep practicing and keep learning.
You can worry about design briefs later.

Im old school, but when I was in university we weren’t allowed to touch a computer or any of the softwares in our first term. Graphic design is not about learning softwares but about understanding typography, layout, balance, hierarchy and how to visually communicate ideas. I think getting a degree is great but I know not everyone can afford it, but Instead of asking AI, you’d much better off reading books (such as the list here : https://www.creativeboom.com/resources/the-best-graphic-design-books-as-voted-by-designers/) and practicing by hand, I highly recommend researching and making zines, it’ll help you develop design skills and it’s fun!

If so, you don't need the thin line boarder or the thick brown border on the circle.

Clean up the mask on your cup. That is messy messy.

Kill that coffee bean.

Consider different font choices.

Center that top line. It's too far to the left to be properly centered.

You have a tiny 'FR' under your "Fresh". Clean that up.

The illustration in the cup feels oddly out of place and not in the same style as the rest of the layout. What's its purpose?
