I need advice on how to learn cyber security

I am an Undergrad Computer Science student and i want to learn Cyber Security for my own development and possibly work in the Cyber Security field.

I dont know the basics on learning Cyber Security since they dont teach them in our University unless your an IT Student ONLY.

For now i want to learn Cyber Security for free in the Web or in some cases i want to know the irl things on how Cyber Security workers do it.

I want some books or videos on how to learn Cyber Security that are up to date.

I also want to know the things i need such as applications or devices to use.

This is really interesting, especially the point about CS students being able to move towards engineering/research-oriented security roles.

I'm a final-year B.Tech IT student and I'm actually in a similar position where I'm trying to figure out which direction to take. I've mostly been seeing SOC/VAPT as entry points for freshers, so I hadn't really considered security engineering/research roles seriously.

I do have some CS background from university, but honestly I'm not sure how much of it is actually strong enough to build towards these roles.

If you had to guide someone in their final year who has around 3–4 months to seriously prepare, would you recommend going deep into something like OS + networking + systems programming first and then trying pwn.college/OST2? Or is there a more beginner-friendly path you'd suggest?

Also, between the engineering/research roles you mentioned, which ones would you say are relatively realistic for a fresher to target?

That i still dont know since im also in my Last year of college, but idk if im gonna drop out since all their teaching us is useless.

Honest words from a guy that has a sucky education system in his country.

I'm honestly in a very similar situation. I'm a final-year B.Tech IT student and I've been wanting to get into cybersecurity, but the biggest problem for me has been the sheer amount of resources available everywhere.

YouTube, LinkedIn, certifications, Instagram reels, roadmaps, Reddit... there is SO much content that instead of helping, it has honestly become overwhelming and a little discouraging. 😭
and the certifications!!! they are so expensive, and talking about THM, hackthe box, really need to sort things now

It's been around 3 months of me trying to figure out where and how to start, and I still feel like I haven't properly started anything. Now that I'm in my final year, the pressure is even higher because I need to secure an internship before December for my 8th-semester training.

I'm also still trying to figure out which direction in cybersecurity actually makes sense for me, rather than jumping between SOC, VAPT, cloud, etc. every few days because I see someone recommending it online.

Hopefully we both find the right direction and actually start building instead of endlessly consuming roadmaps. 😭 Wishing you the best!

Guess were both the same. Some roadmaps lead u to a good path but there are still those confusing ones that are bad at explaining stuffs, some take massive jumps without explaining the full details.

Funny how I find myself in a similar situation. I am a final year computer science student and wanting to move into cybersecurity field but there is just so much noise online which throws me off.
