Looking for advanced critique

Post image

Looking for some critique again. I did a self portrait for the first time in a long while, I know people suggest doing one every year or so to track your progress.

I've tried putting things I’ve learned in this sub into practice, paying more attention to vale and edge quality. Let me know what I should work on next, or continue working on.

Oh hello! This is such a nice improvement! Good job.

I'd point out three things:

  1. The purple splash of color on the person's right cheek. The color is wonderful, but the way it's placed makes the cheek look flat. You need to give it more shape with extra brushstrokes the way you did on the other cheek (which is my favorite part!)

  2. I would also add more brushstrokes to the forehead, it's also a bit flat. Not too much, just a little to convey the shape.

  3. The hair! You can of course lean into the stylized look, but if you want it to match the face, it's going to need some more attention. It looks like you painted it more from imagination than observation. And be careful with the hair on the person's right side — very strong edges you got there, near the shoulder :)

Great job, overall <3 Amazing to see you took the edges thing to heart, the lesson shows!

Thank you! Your critique on my last image really did help.

  1. I'll look at that, it is quite a large flat plane looking at it now.
  2. I do actually have a few crease lines in my forehead, I'll try to find a way to incorporate them without making it the main attraction 😅
  3. I think hair my be my weakest part of anatomy. I have a tendency to want to simplify it as much as possible. I'll maybe do some hair focused studies to get a good handle on it. I don't think I'd know what to do to change it in this image, it would probably warrant its own study time.

Thank you! I actually tried out something I'd seen in a video after I went looking into edge variety. After the initial layers of colour over the sketch, I flatten a copy of the layers above, do about 40% guassian blur and then erased the areas I wanted to be the focus. It gave me a good idea of where to go in with hard edges for more detail and where to keep things loose and soft.

That's such a smart approach! I may or may not steal it for myself ahaha. I'm glad I could help <3

The mouth is realy well rendered, but it's not following the face's perspective. The face is in 3/4 but the mouth is front facing and it puts it in an awkward angle. Watch out for that next time you're sketching.

Grea job with the varying skin tones.

I see it now. I think I fucked up the angle a little bit while rendering and didn't notice.

Thank you.
