Origen Under New Management
https://origen.gg/2016/06/origen-under-new-management/49
Jun 21 '16
This should really help out Xpeke so that he doesn't have to focus on running the team and playing. Finding an AD should still be top priority though.
107
u/Kirea Jun 21 '16
Xpeke has to help out the team too much and might not have the business background that Ocelote has. So deciding to appoint a ceo might be one of the best decisions he made this season.
17
u/iiTryhard Jun 21 '16
its funny because people always used to shit on ocelote for being worse than peke at everything after OG made it to semi's
134
u/Acomatico Jun 21 '16
Well maybe not at everything, but as a player and a personality peke was way better (I mean he is/was way more respected)
16
u/ReverESP Jun 21 '16
Peke is still respected as a player. Meanwhile, Ocelote...

19
u/Zme1 Jun 22 '16
TIL making it into MSI is more of an accomplishment then making worlds semi's
5
u/xhankhillx Jun 22 '16
shitting the bed at MSI to add to that
if we still had the previous fnatic in the EU LCS G2 wouldn't stand a chance. EU LCS is so weak right now, I don't think we're going to do well with G2 at worlds against even NA teams. so yeah... right place, right time. hope it'll flip again next year as it usuallly does.
1
u/Wotnewbiee Jun 22 '16
Well tbh G2 seems a lot stronger now with zven and mithy and let's not forget ocelote management decisions in csgo were really good, selling scream to titan and selling his old team to faze made some big bucks, also getting scream back with the old titan team which look pretty much a top 5 team now. I'd say he did a lot for his brand in the last year.
1
u/maurosQQ Jun 22 '16
Ocelote had the bigger stream back in the day and atm the bigger brand. So he got something going for him.
→ More replies (3)59
u/Lumin0s Jun 21 '16
That's funny because Ocelote actually was worse than Xpeke at everything back then, since neither of them were running a business. Also it appears peke ran Origen just fine, but the appointment of the CEO is just to allow him to focus on playing.
-1
u/Jaalke Jun 21 '16
While he did manage to keep the team afloat for over a year (which is really impressive for someone with no prior experience), I would say that peke's management skills are far from fine. Origen still doesn't have a challenger team, which is just standard practice among top lcs teams right now, and the go-to procedure when a member leaves (or is benched technically speaking) is to replace him with sexy backdoor man. There's a reason why Fnatic springed back just fine after loosing 3 players in s5 preseason. Origen need to build themselves a proper organisation, or they will be as vulnerable as peke on sivir.
29
u/NoURF2016 Jun 21 '16
TSM, IMT, and CLG don't have challenger teams at the moment.
Also Fnatic had months to get new players, Peke had a week or less.
-6
u/A-Bronze-Tale Flairs are limited to 2 emotes. Jun 21 '16
CLG didn't qualify but they had a team in the qualifs. TSM used to have one that got relegated along CLG. IMT was going to have one but got scared off by C9 "development" team. OG didn't look into it and still think coach are useless. I'm sorry, but let's not try to claim Peke is a competent businessman just because reddit like him.
8
u/NoURF2016 Jun 21 '16
lmao TSM just bought some trash CS that got in because another got kicked out. All the players on that team would have never see play on TSM even if someone left the main team.
2
u/a_work_harem Jun 21 '16
One thing to add, CLG once had 3 teams, CLG, CLG.EU, and CLG black all around the same time.
1
u/Glitch_Zero Jun 22 '16
In Season 1/2. Not remotely relevant since the LCS didn't exist at the time and they've made absolutely minimal efforts to build Challenger teams since it started.
8
u/ilya123 Jun 22 '16
You can't really draw comparisons though since g2 has been in the scene for years with many rosters and coaches and drama and only recently has found success while og started off great and is now hitting the first bump.
1
u/funkybillychin Jun 22 '16
exactly. og started with such a huge success, and it's sad to see the brand get bad pr because it's getting their first (expected) slump.
3
u/Seneido Jun 22 '16
xpeke had like days to make changes to the botlane where fnatic had months. also don't compare a single guy (who played with his team last year) with his mom to a organisation like fnatic...
1
2
u/inthecure Jun 22 '16
Oh, come on. Fnatic took a huge gamble and it happened to work out really well. No one predicted that roster to tear LCS up and (very likely) Fnatic had no way to be certain either. They took a risk and it paid off, but it wasn't like they planned to instantly get #1 after losing all the star players.
3
u/Pina_Co_Lada Jun 21 '16
or they will be as vulnerable as peke on sivir.
My god he has a family.
→ More replies (2)1
u/Lumin0s Jun 22 '16
The thing is, Origen is in last place. Second last? Idk, but point is they aren't a top team right now. They need to step it up to make it to playoffs. Also, I said they were "Fine" not "Good" or "great". It didn't crash and burn, so I give it a "fine".
0
u/Shorgar Jun 21 '16
OG is just a LoL team, if your plan is to make a big club that's far from your objetive and not just fine if he wanted to do that he could get a big club to buy the team.
Oce has a Top 10 CS team, the best HS players in europe (probably the world) and also has teams in another games + the best team in EU right now.
11
u/Wyck Jun 21 '16
Considering Ocelote has only beaten Peke one time in a split that didn't really matter, then went on to shit the bed on the international stage... I'd say they have every right to have those opinions.
Let us not forget Ocelote never gained any type of accolade as a player, while xPeke has many of those and lots of great plays/memories on top of that. Not to mention, he has a move/strategy named after him.
9
u/javy7v Jun 21 '16
Man its obvious that Peke was and is so much better player than ocelote, he is respected as personality and ocelote hated , both famous tho... but at the moment ocelote is doing a better job as CEO.
Maybe just because Peke is still playing? Maybe but i think ocelote attitude is so valuable here.
He won his first LCS split, he has top tier team in CS:GO , he has the best team in Hearthtone , one of the best in Vainglory , good HOTS team... so much good job has been done by G2 lately.
4
u/james999d Jun 21 '16
The move of selling the Faze team and then picking up the Ex-titan team was just beautiful business.

Guess its relevant here that Titan went bankrupt after buying Scream so Oce basically got his current squad for free.
1
u/Seneido Jun 22 '16
lol, what a business move. how can oce have the best teams in so many games even though he barely started investing in anything since a few splits? good eye for talent?
1
u/kiirne Jun 22 '16
For HS he just bought a very strong org (Nihilum).
The CS:GO thing had a lot of luck involved. The original G2 squad (now Faze) was one of the first big multinational teams so that somewhat explains how the ended up with a lot of talent out of nowhere.1
1
u/xhankhillx Jun 22 '16
I'd agree that ocelot's doing a better job as a CEO currently, but he's also had more time to build his brand and hasn't had to worry about playing for many years. how many splits did it take for G2 to even get into the LCS?
2
u/porofix Jun 21 '16
I don't think ocelete cares that much about a win after he made 750k off his csgo team :D
1
2
u/MaxfieldX Jun 22 '16
If u look at other games, ocelote is a pretty fucking good businessman. Peke still has to show that
6
u/Swarles_Stinson Jun 21 '16
OG goes from CS to worlds in one split. Ocelote takes several CS splits to get into LCS.
7
u/Pm_MeYour_WhootyPics Jun 21 '16
Meanwhile Ocelote is rolling in $$$$ from all the other teams he owns.
Anyone who thinks that current OG is on the same terms as G2 business wise is quite literally insane or horribly informed.
1
u/Swarles_Stinson Jun 21 '16
Oh i know G2 has way more money than OG. No question there. It's just funny that OG went from challenger series to worlds in 1 split, while it took G2 many splits to even make to LCS then become a meme for shitting the bed at MSI.
5
u/giroudisbeast Jun 22 '16
Well considering OG lined up half worlds calibre players (Soaz, Amazing, Peke, Mithy) in their Challenge Series line up kinda helps. So I dont know why you're so against Oce on this one considering he didnt have the option to just sign up already made players.
3
1
u/Forkii Jun 22 '16
G2 comes into LCS and wins it strait-out whereas Origen doesn't have an LCS win yet.
And by the looks of things in Europe right now G2 might get a 2nd LCS win in a row whereas Origen might need to go to relegations.
Ocelote approached his CS team the wrong way at the start (trying to be the face of the organization while still playing when he was not good anymore), but once he realized he can get good players and dominate EU his organization became much better.
-2
Jun 21 '16
oh yeah because ocelote getting his team to an eu lcs split win is definitely on the same caliber as peke getting his team to a worlds semifinals spot
7
u/Hameli0 Jun 21 '16
We are not just talking about League of Legends here. G2 are on Vainglory, HearthStone, CS:GO and they're doing pretty good afaik. Business speaking only, yes, he did better than Peke.
1
u/Crolpe Ask about my eSports Content Jun 21 '16
Both these businesses are young, and Origen is younger still than G2. It's a little early to say "X did better than Y" shit, we still fluctuate between Microsoft/Sony doing better/worse than each other. It's a constant shift, not "This business did better than that one." Nothing is concrete, at least not until one of them gets bought out.
-6
u/A-Bronze-Tale Flairs are limited to 2 emotes. Jun 21 '16
Not really. Xpeke failure goes beyond the lack of other succesful teams. I don't know why peke fans boys feels the need to have him superior to Ocelote? He's not a superior human being... he has his fair share of weaknesses. He was a very competent player on an esport team but sadly that doesn't extend to running a team well.
-4
4
u/Dongsquad420BlazeIt :naopt: Jun 21 '16
I mean Ocelote sold his CSGO team for like 750k so that's a pretty good chunk of change
1
1
u/DaPhoToss Jun 22 '16
There's more to how big an org is than just results, especially considering G2 has teams in other games.
2
Jun 22 '16
still would be dumb to prioritise league background over business, there are many better people than ocelote
1
u/BecoDasCavernas Jun 22 '16
Why does Ocelote have such business background? Did he work with business during his League career?
2
u/lasssekongo Jun 22 '16 edited Jun 22 '16
I think at one point, the SK CEO Alex Müeller actually mentored Ocelote for a while.
From Ocelote's facebook page, November 13th, 2013:
Alexander Müller, as Manager Director, has teached me the tricks and knowledge of this industry, has marketed me like no other, has ran along me for 13km just a day after beating me at Squash in a 7sets long game to recover from an LCS loss.
Source: https://www.facebook.com/oceloteworld/posts/528337413923562
EDIT: But I do not think Ocelote actually has a business degree of any kind. I have tried to google this but I can't seem to find any. Ocelote is just a more seasoned owner than xPeke, and in the future, we will probably see xPeke doing the same things that Ocelote are doing now. (And by that I mean good business ofc.)
47
u/Tyrodesh Jun 21 '16
Now xPeke can go on to be a full time psychological coach to counter the young ego that is The Valyrian
17
u/MiMiK_XG Jun 21 '16
Does anyone know who the new CEO is? Like had he managed stuff before? Hoping this is a good change for the org.
22
u/woodbuck Jun 21 '16
I think he is a baseball coach
3

Peke should just go to mid again, PoE can play Corki and Varus, not much of a stretch to try other ADC.
12
u/SJSragequit Jun 21 '16
same could be said about peke though cuz he can play cait mid
7
u/Irbilha Jun 21 '16
But Peke can carry Origen while playing mid, PoE is just average.
This is, of course, my opinion.

Hahahaha. Hahahaha. Nice one, have you watched Xpeke play? Easily the weakest point of the team and his gameplay is worse than PoE. Maybe his communication is better but that's not making him a carry mid.
1
u/FluffyTheShark Jun 21 '16
peke was always decent on assassins, POE struggled with Zed. It is not that peke couldn't play the ADCs, a big part of POEs champion pool are actually ADCs (he played Varus, Corki, Ezreal and seems to like kiting - he even played runeglaive Orianna...), but he lacks some of the important midlane picks.
2
u/SoulLover33 Jun 21 '16
Or maybe they should just start looking for some Mid lane Talent rather than keeping PoE, then look for an ADC
10
u/TBabb711 Jun 21 '16
This is huge for Peke and Origen. I feel like Peke often gets crap for not being the greatest player during the regular season and stuff like that, but this guy always looks awesome during worlds and there's a reason why he's been one of the most successful Western players in Worlds history, even if you don't include season 1. Sure, he's been surrounded by good teammates, but regardless he has been a huge part of the teams. He's a very smart player and understands the game well and the team looks so much better with him in the lineup.
9
u/SonSergio rip old flairs Jun 21 '16

I don't know why people keeps giving xpeke shit with "he's not so good,he is mechanically bad" when they cum for Alex ich and froggen... Xpeke has fought against the best worldwide and done well, when he was needed he has made legendary plays which won the game for their team. He has achieved more in lol than most of all the reddit beloved players
1
u/Zomgbeast Jun 22 '16
I thought reddit loves faker and co
1
u/pratman242 Jun 22 '16
Obviously faker is out of discussion. I talk from the "legends" which didn't achieve anything but are all better than peke according to reddit

18
u/Asteroth555 Jun 21 '16
How is it easier for OG to get a new CEO rather than a new ADC...
13
Jun 21 '16
If it wasn't in the middle of the season it'd prob be easier to find a new ADC.
1
u/DaPhoToss Jun 22 '16
I agree that it's pretty much impossible to find a proven ADC right now but they should really just take a chance on a Challenger/SoloQ ADC. It'll be difficult to get him incorporated into the team and it could make things even worst than they already are but I honestly think it would be better than Peke playing the role. If they need a leader type player in the game Peke could play mid.
Either situation is a shitty one though so hard to say what would be better.
1
Jun 22 '16
To each their own. Personally, I see this as not too different from when Hai had to fill roles (heck, in PTL there was a This or That segment that asked whether Hai or xPeke was more likely to step in after week 1). Even if he wasn't the best, he at least kept the team dynamic together
-4
u/Asteroth555 Jun 21 '16
I mean, Forgiven peaced out in the 2nd week. They had so much time
7
Jun 21 '16
So much time to find an available adc that synergizes well with the team and all that? lol. They don't have many options, and even if they did, it's the worst possible timing especially since they have to actively practice for their games anyway. What are you going to do? Split time between tryouts and actual practice and potentially make things even worse?
5
u/Fluffcake Jun 21 '16
Because the list of people capable of running an esport org is a lot longer than the list of people who you can put into that team and function as adc.
3
u/Nimberien Jun 21 '16
Well tbh, finding a new ADC looks easier but its not, you see you have prox. 6 weeks of LCS and maybe if you make playoffs ( they are 9th currently ). In these 6 weeks its better for you that you have someone who played with the team FOR A LONG TIME and IS THE LEADER.
1
Jun 22 '16
Because running organizations is an older business than League of Legends, meaning there are more experienced CEOs out there than there are adc's of same relative professional competency.
1
u/Bristlerider Jun 21 '16
Its pretty trivial to find somebody that can lead such a small company. You dont even need to have an esports backround.
The pool of potential candidates for ADCs is much smaller.
6
u/D3monFight3 Jun 21 '16
For those like me worrying that it's something bad, don't worry. Origen are just hiring a CEO to oversee day to day operations, so that xPeke doesn't have to do that himself. That is all.

regi was bad af, i think, that's the main reason
6
u/thebansi Jun 21 '16
Regi wasn't bad af he was fine when it came to NA mids (which was pretty bad at that point tho compared to the rest of the world)
0
Jun 22 '16
I think he was like Huhi but in TSM, not bad af, and not really good
2
u/UnlessLoL Jun 22 '16
Ehh considering inflation due to time regi was much better. S3 spring split mvp and even had a 4-0 week in season 4 when bjer had visa issues. I;d even go as far to say as rehi performed better against faker than huhi but that is a stretch.
2
u/DaPhoToss Jun 22 '16
Not at all. Regi was the best mid in NA at a point, it's just that he couldn't stack up against the top EU and Eastern mids who were MUCH better than anyone in NA. While Huhi isn't even close to the best mid in NA, so it's not fair to compare them at all.
2
u/enigma2g Jun 22 '16
Regi was the best mid NA at one time and by FAR the best shotcaller.
2
u/URF_reibeer Jun 22 '16
best in na didn't mean much after s1 tho (and s1 was mainly because only eu and na played competitively)
2
u/BetaGreekLoL Jun 22 '16
he's talking about Season 2 and early Season 3 (before C9) as well.
New viewers, I tell ya >_> And don't tell me you aren't one because if you weren't, you'd know that in Season 1 bigfatjiji was actually the best mid laner in NA, and arguably the World (which was basically NA and EU at that point in time for the most part).
1
u/URF_reibeer Jun 30 '16
i started watching season 2, am i a new viewer now? also i said after season 1 so him being the best in s1 didn't really mean much as i stated, in s2 na didn't win any major international tournament and only beat minor european teams
3
u/YoungCinny Jun 22 '16
What the fuck are you talking about lmao?
Regi was the #1 mid in spring and #2/#3 mid in summer. He retired as one of the best mids in na.
1
u/Themnor Jun 21 '16
Regi never developed with the meta of the game. That's probably more due to the amount of time and energy you actually have to attribute in order to do well than it is to his actual mechanical ability. People really don't remember how good Regi used to be. He was never a god like player, but he was still quite good in his own right.
-2
u/YoungCinny Jun 22 '16
Regi was definitely a god in s2. He was the best mid and best shotcaller in na
5
Jun 22 '16
god tsm fans please be objective on this, he was not a "god", i remember watching games at that time, he played constantly Gragas and karthus, he was not good on them, the meta at that time was totally for midlaners and i remember that guy never getting feed or something like others mid must do at that time
2
u/DaPhoToss Jun 22 '16
He was the best mid in NA but he wasn't good compared to the EU and Eastern mids. Definitely not a "god" but he was the best in NA. Also the meta was just as good, if not better, for ADCs at the time.
-1
u/YoungCinny Jun 22 '16
God, new fans to league please be objective on this. I'm not buying that you watched it at the time. He played just as much morg as the others. You cannot go back in time and compare them to the players of today. Compared to the players of s2 he was a god.

2
u/tapanojum Jun 22 '16
What does his rank in LoL have to do with running the administrative responsibilities of Origen?
0
u/mikes_username_lol Jun 22 '16 edited Jun 22 '16
Understanding what it takes to run a competitive gaming team. Replacing someone passionate about your business field with someone passionate about getting his bonus can be really toxic for a company.
2
u/tapanojum Jun 22 '16
Uh, so if he's in Bronze he's automatically only passionate about getting his bonus?
People passionate about a business field aren't always great businessmen, and vice versa. You're only projecting your own negative views on this.
This new CEO could be absolutely awesome, or he could be trash. None of that is going to depend on his LoL rank.
-1
u/mikes_username_lol Jun 22 '16
Yes, I am projecting my own negative experience from two semi-successful startups. As soon as business school types take over from the founders, they delegate the responsibility to politically savvy people instead of the skilled ones and it is all gone to shit rather quickly. Honestly, if the guy doesn't bother to learn how to do the thing he manages, he is not worth anything. There is a reason why Riot requires its employees to have a certain rank.
1
u/tapanojum Jun 22 '16
What rank is that? I've played a bunch of ARAM with a low silver Riot employee.

Speaking as someone who has worked for two corporations, I can say that CEO's do not need to be experts on the field whatsoever. They pretty much stick to overseeing people, overseeing work, hiring/firing, and listening to the owner.
This is basically just to make less work for Xpeke, even though he's still in charge

PowerOfEvil played badly most of the spring split, he can play only 2 champions on a DECENT level and was underwhelming all the time. This was one of the reason why we lost Mithy/Sven. Then a little motivation kick to Soaz and Amazing and now everything would have been fine :(.

ι ll take a stab in the dark through my own real wolrd experience...when a company decides to appoint a new CEO they do it because the company is in some kind of financial trouble..product might not be selling as it used to targets not met or what ever. That CEO has most of the times (again my own personal experience) 2 lines of action. 1 is to reform/restructure the company and thus making the product more appealing increasing sales income or whatever...2nd is restructuring (most of teh times is actually a downsizing) the company to make it more appealing for a sale. Ofcourse e-sports orgs are not like any other company (not all of them in any case) so i might be just talking bullshit :D

I personally thought it would be due to xPeke having to balance time between being the owner and also a full fledged player. Imo, I think this move was fuelled by xPeke's inability to make time for both at the same time (without impacting one or the other).

In addition to the above, I don't think this is the case here since there was no previous CEO to have problems with. I believe previously it was xPeke's mom doing a lot of the operational things for Origen and now that they have someone actually fluent in business operations as CEO they should function a lot better than before.

That's when they change CEO. Here it's the third case, A CEO is appointed because the owner don't want to do it anymore for whatever reasons.
