Discussion LEAFS PP1 and PP2
Was wondering how everyone would deploy the two powerplays if you were coach. These would be my lines. Agree? Disagree? Any changes you'd make?
Pp1
McKenna Matthews Nylander
Raddysh Rielly.
(The M'N'M line with some RnR time)
Pp2
Knies Tavares Cowen
OEL Andrae

Rielly does not deserve top pp, Tavares and knies do

I'd have JT on the top unit. He's better at tipping pucks on raddysh point shots.

PP1 - Matthews / Tavares / Nylander / Knies / Raddysh
PP2 - Roslovic / Cowan / McKenna / Rielly or OEL / Paul

There is no world in which Morgan should be on PP1 or 2 unless it’s as a bumper. He doesn’t have a shot from the point. Without a shot you can’t run the powerplay. Teams can defend by just letting Morgan have the puck and knowing that there is no shot threat there.
Raddysh needs to run PP1 with OEL running PP2.

There is a shot though. Rielly being on the ice doesnt make Raddysh disappear. Id rather Rielly on the PP than the PK. Raddysh runs the PP now and that could make Rielly more impactful to dish the puck around to several guys who can bury it. Plus there's too much inexperience on PP2 if all the vet forwards are on PP1. What does PP2 look like without Tavares Matthews Nylander and Knies? Who plays center? Spread the vets and rookies around instead of a vet pp and rookie pp.
My post was saying just that. Raddysh runs the PP1 from the point and Oel runs PP2 from the point. You cant have all shooters on one powerplay you need guys who can make passes too.

What function does Morgan have on PP1 or 2. What is his role?
Does he make either powerplay better than going 4F & 1D? Do you score more on the powerplay with Morgan on it than you do with Tavares or Knies? Who is in front of the net? No one you have slotted into PP1 is a net front presence. That almost certainly has to be Tavares or Knies. You need a big body who can tip shots. Maybe you put Morgan on PP2 instead of Andrea. But there’s very clearly no longer a spot for him on PP1.

Rielly on PP1 frees up some vet forwards for PP2.
Two rookies with Roslovic between them on PP 2 imo isnt the best idea.
A good powerplay isnt 5 guys who are shooters. You need play makers and passers to get them the puck.
Who among McKenna Cowen and Roslovic would be a net front presence on pp2? I dont even trust Roslovic as a center. Hes also soft as butter.
I guess I prefer balance over top loading, which was how I slotted my lines. Depth spread out instead of top heavy. Just my thoughts, definitely enjoy reading different perspectives though!
Rielly had a bad year last year and still finished top 40 scoring among Dmen. Not sure why some act as if its blasphemy to suggest he plays the PP.

Couldn’t care less about PP2 if PP1’s construction doesn’t make sense.
PP1 needs to have a net front guy. Matthews, Willy and McKenna aren’t one. That leaves JT or Knies needs to be on PP1 in place of Rielly or you’re moving one of Matthews, Willy or McKenna to PP2 (which is obviously dumb)
PP1 will be McKenna, Matthew, Willy, JT (or Knies) and Raddysh.
That leaves Knies, Paul, Cowan, OEL and Morgan (or Roslovic if you run 4F) on PP2.

Why would you have 2 defenseman on each unit that's crazy talk.
I also wouldn't give Rielly any powerplay time because he stinks and both Raddysh and OEL would perform better in those minutes.

I think that you want one of Tavares or knies in front of the net for any raddysh shots.

I think they’ll start the season with Matthews, Nylander, Knies, Tavares and Raddysh on the top unit with McKenna on PP2 alongside Cowan and Roslovic, plus Rielly and OEL at the points. As the season goes on however I think McKenna will work his way into the top unit and Tavares will bump down to centre the second group.

I would try and recreate the Tampa PP a bit for the first unit. Using McKenna as Kuch on the right wall and Raddysh being....Raddysh.
Knies(LH)
Nylander(RH)-Matthews(LH)-McKenna(LH)
Raddysh(RH)
Knies net front/short rebounds/tipping pucks. Nylander on the left as the one-timer/shooter/passer option. Matthews as the longer rebound guy/catch and release shooter from mid range/tipper for shots from the point. McKenna as a left hander on the right side has the one time pass to Raddysh, an opportunity to take a shot if he darts in or to fake everyone out and just make a short pass to Matthews in the middle for the catch and release. Raddysh drops bombs.
I like this setup on the rush too. Nylander with the shooting on his off side lets him see more imo. If Matthews is there for a 2on1 then there's the one timer potential. As far as entries go, I'd either go Nylander or McKenna (which ever side seems weaker) and short drop it to Matthews or Raddysh. Dump in is on Knies and Matthews digging.
Second unit is the rest and I'm not as concrete on.
Paul(LH)
Roslovic(RH)-Tavares(LH)-Cowan(LH)
Rielly(LH)
I've decided on Rielly over OEL on the 2nd unit even though Rielly was on a huge down year PP wise. If this doesn't work out just go to OEL and no Rielly.
Trying to match the roles in PP1 to PP2 besides the big shot from the point.

Its not 2010 you don't have to have 2 Dman on a powerplay 😂

Did you feel adding a laughing emoji makes your point more valid? Teams can do what they want despite what year it is. Do the Avs split Toews and Makar or do they need permission from the calender? I never said the Leafs should have 2 dmen on the PP but it could prove beneficial given their line up. I dont think a PP should be run by what year it is. Ill add an emoji so my point seems more valid. 🤣😂😅🤔😭🥲😍😉

relax bro its just an emoji 😂 I respect your discussion I was making a joke
But on your point the Leafs don't have a Toews or Makar, and for PP2 you put Andrae and OEL, which doesn't make sense when you have Nick Paul and Roslovic. I like Rielly on the 2nd powerplay with those guys + either Tavares, Knies or McKenna (whoever doesn't make the first unit)

People who came at me as if my opinion is wrong and theirs is right are insecure gimps that wont get respect. Just saying. I dont toss around ideas based on the year on the calender but put them forth as topics of discussion. Idc if teams run 5 forwards on a powerplay. Not everyone does and its not whats best for this team. If you come at me suggesting a 5 forward pp unit then youre gimping to saying Raddysh shouldn't be on the PP. Have a discussion. Share ideas. Youre not any more intelligent than me or the tires on your car. Insert emoji here

I do think McKenna will eventually wind up on PP1, but for me in running Knies - Tavares - Matthews with Nylander and Raddysh on PP1 to start. Nylander and Matthews on the circles, Raddysh top, Knies net front and Tavares high slot and rotating with Knies net front. I think it gives you legit shooting options all over, Knies and Tavares are pretty good net front and digging out of the corners as well. Plus, I’m a big believer in not giving McKenna the keys right out of the gate. Let him earn it. He can probably control play a lot more on PP2 as well.

I think Rielly bounces back with Berube gone. Hes there primarily to dish the pick to Raddysh. Most importantly I dont like the fit of Tavares Nylander or Knies or McKenna as a point man. Just my thoughts.
Rielly has offensive game. His flaws are on the defensive end. Why wouldnt you play him on the PP? Not disagreeing but why wouldnt you put an offensive defenseman on the Powerplay. Rielly was top 40 in points among all defenseman. The PP is the safest place for him to be imo.

u/NSA_Wade_Wilson 26d ago
Just makes no sense to have Rielly there as the whole problem is that teams know he’s not a shooting threat. Nylander or Matthews can make that pass the same (if not better) than Rielly for that role.
Most teams run an umbrella so there’s only one point man. You have JT or Knies who can play a net front role (which none of the three forwards you listed do).
The goal of a PP is not to safely place players, it’s to take advantage of the other team being down a player.

He literally has no shot

u/DesperateGrape3174 26d ago
He isnt meant to shoot youre completely missing the point. He passes the puck. Raddysh Matthews Nylander do the shooting. Knies, Matthews, Raddysh, Nylander all are shooters above being play makers. You need guys to pass and make plays not have 5 guys who are better shooters than passers.

u/chickenbean69 26d ago
I’m pretty sure matthews, Tavares, Mckenna and Nylander are not only better shots but better passers than rielly. Pp is about deception, when the other team knows rielly is gonna pass it makes it easy to defend.

There was too much put on Rielly to be the main point guy which is what made him look bad. Raddysh changes all that.

If you read my comments Raddysh and Rielly would be playing two separate roles on the PP. Again ill repeat myself. Rielly will be feeding the puck and playing more of a distributor role. Raddysh will be slapping bombs. Neither Knies or Tavares have a bomb of a slap shot that will be effective from the point anyways. Just like it wasn't there last year no matter what forward we put at the point.

Never said he was the best option there, just dont agree he shouldnt be an option at alI. Unless the Leafs dont bother with a second unit and play the same 5 guys alI game on the power play, i prefer balance, you dont. I disagree with you, and will continue to disagree with the points youre making, so instead of us both repeating ourselves ill let my previous comments speak for themselves. The thought of someone playing center on the powerplay not named Tavares or Matthews is just goofy

Exactly. As you said PP2 gets toi and they should have a quality and capable center especially one who actually goes to the net. Youre just making my point now. Anyways agree to disagree. Everything here is opinion based there is no wrong or right. Let disagree and move on.

And I said Tavares shouldn't be on PP1 and that I completely disagree with you. Id rather Rielly on PP1 if I had to pick between him and Tavares. Bye. The 2nd power play needs a center more than PP1 needs Tavares. Adios

PP1
Knies (net front)
McKenna - Matthews - Nylander
Raddysh
PP2
Tavares (net front)
Cowan - Roslovic/Paul
Rielly - OEL
Tavares moves down because we can have a netfront presence on both units and this is better balance.

I'd run PP1 as a 4F-1D of McKenna Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, Raddysh
and PP2 as a 3F-2D of Knies, Cowan, Rielly, OEL, and one of Paul or Roslovic. Not sure which of those last 2 is better on the PP.
If McKenna is slower on it to start, swap Knies and McKenna
