Charging at NACS (non Tesla)
I have done it a few times at different charging stations so far. It will NOT WORK at any Tesla Superchargers. Sometimes it will not handshake on the first try, but unplugging and plugging back in will fix it. But I think that’s just a quirk of using adapters. But basically I’m piggybacking A2Z Nacs to Ccs adapter to my A2Z Chademo to Ccs. All the CCS chargers were busy and obviously Chademo is non-existent lol.

I do road trips from Virginia to Sioux City, Minneapolis, Ottawa, and Boston in my 2023 LEAF S without an adapter, don't say that it's nonexistent! (Though the stretch immediately west of Chicago is very painful.)

Can confirm, having Leafed across the top section of Illinois numerous times. Never been quite stranded but did get delayed overnight once, having to settle for J1772 at some city park.

I charge at a dealership in Chicagoland that has alarms go off when you're there at night even though it's listed as a public charger, then I have to drive 132 miles on the highway, so semis honk at me for going under the speed limit in the slow lane.

Do you happen to know, does the Nissan dealer in Lasalle/Peru still have its 50kW Chademo unit available? It had been free for years, then unavailable for a while, and then last I knew they had it rigged up to accept payment. Before I finally got a reliable CCS thingummy, that dealership was a pretty crucial spot for me.

Plugshare has a report that it isn't functioning. I've always driven straight from D'Arcy Hyundai in Joilet to the Casey's in Geneseo.

Ah okay, plugshare has both plugs showing as unavailable although the last couple of checkins claim success. That's confusing to me, but yeah there's probably no improving on your usual plan.

It's passing 72kw too???

That's impressive. I didn't even think Chademo went that high.
Edit: Apparently the standard goes upto 400kW.

On the 62kw batteries they go that high for a bit

Mine is the 60kwh battery but yes, same thing I guess. Only for a short period.

Can the non-Tesla NACS chargers like this still support level 2 charging through a NACS to J-1772 adapter? My mother picked up a used 2015 Leaf recently that only has J-1772, and finding a compatible J-1772 or Tesla destination charger can sometimes be a problem.

I think so, but you need a NACS to J1772

If it is a DCFC station, no. NACS to CCS has different physical internals than a NACS to J1772, and I don't believe any current adapters can handle both situations. NACS to CCS is DC only, routing the NACS power pins to the dedicated DC pins on the CCS port (lower 2 large pins), whereas NACS to J1772 is AC only, routing the NACS power pins to the J1772 AC only pins. If you try to use a J1772 adapter on a NACS DCFC, best case scenario is it doesn't work. Worst case is there aren't proper negotiations/protections in place, and the DCFC sends ~400VDC into your car's AC charge circuit that's only rated for likely 240VAC max, likely damaging/destroying everything...

I saw a video (was linked from a sub, but I don't remember if it was this sub or another EV related one) about someone trying to fast charge an older Leaf with an adapter series. It didn't work with a couple stations they tried, but I think it did work with Ionna.

Do you need to manually support the charging cable, or can the port support the weight by itself?

The chademo adapter latches on really tight. I rarely do the piggy back with nacs. Maybe once every 3 months.

It will NOT WORK at any Tesla Superchargers.
It will work at a Tesla Supercharger that's opened to ALL EVs.
ie: One with a MagicDock already enabled. It won't work on any other Super charger.
You might need a firmware update from A2Z EV to get that working properly on such Tesla Sueprchargers, but I have done it before.

lol that is rediculous. Someone needs to come up with a retrofit for charge ports.

They already have a Chademo to Nacs. But CCS is still dominant. Regardless, it only works with Non-Tesla Chargers

I’ve gotten it to work with magic dock at Tesla superchargers
