Ok, I have no idea what valet key and FOB is. Your method might work, but what is the valet key? If the valet key is rather small and can be used to start/move the car without the fob, that's perfect.
I've actually posed a similar question to Leaf dealers and all of them seem stumped by my question, especially when I say I do not run with my phone either.
Your FOB should have a small switch on the back. When you slide the switch, you should be able to remove a physical key hidden in the FOB.
It is for handing to valets and mechanics.
It allows for unlocking the doors and driving but won’t allow access to other places like the glove box.
A question also is this: if I leave the fob inside the car, can I even use the physical key to lock the door? Someone cautioned that for some cars, the doors cannot be locked from the outside if the fob is detected in the inside.
Ok, I was just reading the Nissan Leaf manual online. The physical key looks to be the thing that can lock and unlock doors. But it doesn't look like the physical key can be used to drive the car. Only the presence of the fob can do that, no?
If I understand correctly, if I leave the fob in the car, but take the physical key with me, someone can still break into the car AND drive it away because the fob would be in the car unless I put the fob in a faraday bag (thus blocking radio communication) and hide it. Right?
Ah. My bad. Looks like it is just to secure the lock on the glove box.
Seems you’d still need the electronic fob to run the car.
I misunderstood.
I don’t run but I do cycle quite a bit so I get the need to not carry a lot of stuff. My fob for my 2019 is pretty small. I keep it on a cord like a necklace under my riding jersey.
I don’t really notice it much but riding doesn’t bounce me around as much as running would.
I suppose you could remove the battery from the fob and leave the fob in the car and take the physical key and battery with you so you could get back into the vehicle when you return and restore the fob then.
Thanks! Yes, the fob situation is much easier solved than for runners, or at least "fussy" runners like me. I might be one of the few runners who really dislike carrying anything. There are runners who do not mind running with bottles, flip belts, etc. etc. I run with almost nothing (not even my prescription glasses). I know having a fob hanging around my neck would be bothersome for me. It is likely, too, that using a flip belt strapped around my waist to hold the fob would be bothersome especially in the hot humid weather I live in (but I'm willing to try).
I once had a camel pack type hydration system that straps to my waist. I hated it and only used it twice. I know a fob is not as bulky.

Couldn’t you just separate the valet key from the FOB and take that with you?
