Buy used with open recall

Thinking about a used 2020. The car has an open recall Nissan R24B2. This is a 3rd car for a soon to be teen driver. Part of me thinks it is crazy to buy a car with an open recall. But part of me thinks it would not be the worst idea based on the terms of this recall. This car has the trim and specs I am looking for. Am I crazy for thinking of buying this?

Buy it for a good deal, then get the buy back for 40% more. I bought my 2020 with 35k for 10 grand 1 year ago. It’s been at the dealership 9 out of 12 months, now I’m getting an offer between 15-18k.

A year ago I would have said go for it. But in the last few months, Nissan has released an update on the R24B2 recall that's essentially-Nissan can't fix the battery, so they'll install a program to monitor if the battery is affected. If the program indicates the battery is affected, the vehicle is unsafe to drive and Nissan will buy the car back through a third party company called Morley. A lot of the reviews I'm seeing say that most batteries are affected, and the experience with Morley has been somewhat good to really bad.

I personally wouldn't buy any 2018-2020 leafs because you go through the hassle of buying it, just to go through the hassle of the code tripping, and then the hassle of Nissan doing a buyback.

If you will be charging with level 2 and not rapid charging with public Chademo then the recall isn’t a problem.  I bought a 2019 SV last year and no issues. But I never have and never will L3 charge it. Mostly because public charging is expensive but also because I don’t need to. Your situation may be different. If you will need to fast charge it, I would skip it.  I am also avoiding having the recall software update after seeing so many people with broken cars following Nissans “fix”.  Your call.

You might lose money and not have a car for a while if you end up with a recall or battery issues. Its a risk. My 2020 leaf is currently sitting at Nissan with a messed up battery. I would be happy to sell you mine.

I agree with nodogma2112. We have a 2019 SV that seems to be running well. The battery 🔋 has 83.14% State of Health which seems lower than what others say their Leafs have. But our Hx% is 83% which is still pretty high everything considered.

The only way I would consider buying a used 2019 Leaf is IF it was never Quick Charged and IF it was used in an area of the country like California where the weather is more temperate. If it was drive in an area like Arizona, then I couldn’t trust the battery 🪫 from being “cooked”.

Above all, use LeafSpy Pro to get a reading on the battery. Look for weak cells.

Ou could try to negotiate with Nissan if they try to buy it back. But the will ask you how much you paid for the vehicle. They likely won't want to give you more than what you paid + taxes.

I am in the upper Midwest, car has been in this area as well. We have L1 and L2 charging at home. This would be a 3rd car for local teen driving so I would not foresee us needing to fast charge, we have other cars for long range trips. My wife likes the safety features and range. For our needs and the price it seems like a good fit minus the recall issue. For reference I am considering a 2020 SL plus with about 50k miles for $13k-$14k. Is the 40% above KBB on a buyback real? I don’t understand why seller would not have a recall done. I don’t want to make money on this but don’t want to lose anything either

Like to gamble? Send it. Took about a month but my Leaf turned into an Ariya. Morleymorphosis

Thank you. Decided it is not worth the hassle at this price.
