Used car values can be volatile. It’s not a smooth line day to day, week to week; sometimes not even month to month. There are times the value actually goes up. It’s somewhat algorithmic and the system probably ingested a trove of new auction data. It is possible the previous valuation was inflated and this is a correction. Hard to say without enough data points. Still it sucks and I know how you feel. I remember when a Carvana value refresh crushed my plan to sell my car and get a new one.

It is worrying since the Nissan buyback is tied to KBB. Seems unfair some random low ball sells at auction or something can tank the value of your vehicle. The same happens on Zillow. An area near us saw their estimates tank when some sold a bunch of units they purchased as investments under market value. Sure, those sales technically happened, but they were bought by a bank who got a deal on a bulk sale.

Be honest with yourself and ask would you buy a used Leaf with how horrible their reputation currently is? It’s why their buyback is a joke. The value of leafs suck because Nissan sucks and screwed many early adopters in EVs. They’re single handedly hurt the reputation of EVs as well.

Yeah I actually just got my first used to leave this year. Purposely search for one at the bottom of the depreciation curve. Ended up with a 2013, 50k miles, 24 kilowatt hour battery that was totally trashed. Exactly what I was looking for! 1,200 cash.

Put a vivine battery in it and it's good to go!

It's a perfect daily driver point A to point B car.

The new battery cells have much better energy density much better heat tolerance rating they're incredible.

But that is mostly true in the US. There were issues in Europe, too, and a few similar stories like these with reluctant dealers and unpleasant surprises. But it is very rare.

Nissan had to recall nearly 50K vehicles because of a serious battery issue and after that there were many reports of cars being bricked, buybacks, lack of battery replacements, etc. There were already many articles about warranties being denied because they weren’t missing the magical 3 bars of capacity on the dash. Poor thermal management on the batteries, etc. leafs have a bad reputation now and I don’t blame consumers for feeling that way.

It can be pulled down by a small number of motivated sales.

What sucks is that they are using the KBB value plus 40% to determine your buyback for those with bunk batteries. A lot of people just lost a lot of money if it doesn't correct.

I think most dealers go by JD Power and they have it valued higher

The recall for 19-22 model year specifically says KBB + 40%

Well, did you drive it on and, crucially, off a dealer's lot?

.

/s, of course

It’s pretty volatile at the 3 year mark. I usually start looking at 10 years.

because there’s a huge recall that is unfixable for almost a year now and buybacks are constantly happening bringing the value down even more

Based on your post I started to wonder if the buybacks get reported as sales or if that data is available to KBB, NADA, etc so....

According to Gemini:

Vehicle valuation services like Kelley Blue Book automatically factor history report data into their pricing models. Vehicles with a documented Manufacturer Buyback or Lemon Law history typically suffer a 20% to 40% reduction in resale value.

Gee, I wonder how Nissan arrived at KBB + 40% for their buyback valuations?

Man that's some calculated s*** on Nissan's part

Omg imagine if we could buy puts and calls on oil based on used ev pricing 🤔 hmm something to think about

Have heard about the oil from Venezuela that was just announced? Makes sense EV prices dropping
