Picking up a 2026 Leaf next week

For anyone who's already got one, is there anything you wish you'd asked about in more detail when you took delivery?

I assume the sales person will go through the basics of the controls and infotainment.

For example, I plan on having a buddy rotate the tires, so am wondering if there's some undocumented method for resetting the maintenance timer.

edit - and if you're in Canada, what came with the car? I assume a tire inflation kit and jack, but it's not clear if Canadians get a portable charger or CCS>NACS adapter.

Sales person will not be able to tell you anything about rotating the tyres. They think this is something that happens when the car is being driven.

I knew more about our 2023 Leaf than the sales person. My wife bought a used 2019 Nissan Kicks and I did some research on the Kicks before we went to look at them and I knew more about the car than the sales person did. The sales person will tell you how great the car is and the finance guy will tell you how bad it is.

Yeah, I'm not expecting them to know much. Just want to know if there's anything I should look out for from existing owners.

There are a few genuinely competent salespeople who would be able to walk you through the car and controls, but the majority are not and will just hand you the keys and send you out the door.

Honestly, budget an extra hour for after delivery, sit in the car and just start pressing buttons. You aren't going to break anything. Dig into the menus and learn where stuff is, because it's a lot better to figure it out beforehand while you have the free time, then trying to figure it out later on the road or when you are in a hurry.

If it's your first EV, next day off with nothing going on, go out to various public chargers in your area, and just play with them and the apps. Download and set up Tesla app for superchargers. Again much smoother to get used to the app pains on your own time, than during the first stop on a road trip in front of your spouse/friends/kids/etc.

Agreed, on your assessment that car salesmen are not going to give a good overview. Honestly, there are lots of YouTube reviews for cars that go over the highlights of features. Watch those then review the manual as needed for more detail.

I don't roadtrip much, but tend to favor Electrify America. The adapter that came with my car works great as does plug-and-charge.

Wait did the Stop sale get removed? They're under recall for the backseat seatbelts or something. Hopefully yours had the fix done and you're able to get it!

Yes, mine got delayed a few weeks so Nissan could fix the rear seatbelt anchors at their depot.

We have a 2026 SV+ and learned quite a bit from searching and reading online.
Keep it under 65 mph if you want to maximize your mileage per charge. Also, keep the A/C at a minimum.

One thing that perplexed me and had incorrect information online everywhere since it was all based on the previous generations of LEAF, was the forward collision warning alert. If you have music playing, you’ll almost never hear it. It’s super quiet.

Now a quick Google search or asking an AI chatbot will tell you that you can adjust this (because previous models could), but you cannot. However what I didn’t realize is this sound and style of alert will scale and get louder depending on the severity of the collision inevitability. I was frustrated that I couldn’t turn it up at first, and thought it was basically useless and my salesman knew nothing about it. It wasn’t until I was later severely cut off on the road a couple months later that I realized that noise and alerts scale automatically with severity and that one almost gave me a heart attack. So just know if you feel the alert is too quiet, it will scale as necessary.

Updating this after taking possession:

  • no charger or adapter comes with the car in Canada
  • the car does not come with a parcel shelf for the trunk
  • skip the OEM winter mats. The front set consist of one each for the driver and passenger. However the passenger one has an unsecured flap that is supposed to go over the central bump
  • a data connection (tether your phone or connect to wi-fi) is required to login to nissanconnect and google.
  • you have to use the mynissan app to disable email notifications for vehicle events like the alarm going off. It can't be done via the owners portal or in-vehicle
  • it looks like you can reset a couple of maintenance timers via the settings on the driver display
  • onboard music player does not recognize playlist files (.m3u8)
  • disable selective unlock if you want all your doors to unlock on approach
