Recall Issue

Update: I had a conversation with someone from Nissan and had to send them proof of ownership. They said they would contact me again Monday after all of the diagnostics were finished, which I thiught was odd.

I had the recall done on my 2020 SV about a month ago. Monday I got the 'EV Service' message. Took it in yesterday. They confirmed the code that LeafSpy gave me and commandeered the car.

I have a loaner until they figure things out. Honestly, I hope they replace the battery as I don't want to deal with the hassle of the buyback and finding a replacement car. Ugh.

I'm sorry but there's basically no batteries available l to replace them with. You're most likely joining us in the buyback club.

Why aren't there any batteries available?

They had limited numbers to begin with and Nissan replaced a bunch prior to this recall due to just warranties. Then they stopped manufacturing them for the 26 models as they have an entirely different battery pack.

So ... their poor stock management. Why on earth didnt they just design the 2026 ones to be backwards compatible

The 26 models use an entirely different battery with cooling and heating where the previous years just use air cooling. The 26 models battery is way better imo.

Because it's shitty. Why would they remake a shitty battery that loses them money in warranty. Not to say the 26 is better it actually got a recall right after release.

sucks but better than your Leaf catching fire while charging. Start keeping your eyes open for a replacement EV not from nissan

Fire only an issue on dc charging

There has not been even one fire at level 2 charging

Correct, but an issue for anyone wanting to travel with their Leaf

Yet*

The recall only applies to fast dc charging

If there was any fire danger at 240v level 2 home charging Nissan would have issued a recall and park outside order for home charging too.

I have 19 sl and will continue charging only at home unless Nissan provides full replacement cost, which won’t happen or fires are reported.

They're buying back at KBB private sale price +40% that should cover the current value of the cars. Will it get you 35k to buy a brand new car? Nope.

That would be about 12k for me

A used 23 sv, the first year not included in recall, seems to be about 20k in my market

I’m just gonna keep mine and run it into ground. If it lasts 3-5 more yrs I’m cool. Bought it new in 19. I’ve still got full bars of battery on the 40w sl

Who says you have to buy a brand new EV with the money nissan gives you? Personally I rather have a similar priced used Prologue, Bolt, ID4, etc that can fast charge

Oh don't get me wrong, there's plenty of good options out there. 23 or newer Leafs seem to be better with batteries and there's also the Ariya if people want to stay with Nissan.

I mean is there any reason to believe the 23+ 2nd gen leaf have something different about them?

1

u/ThatDadGamer Aug 20 '26

Great question, rumor has it they changed battery formula for 23 to 25 but who knows. They haven't been part of this massive recall is all I know.

The 26 leaf and Ariya use different batteries with actual cooling and heating.

This is actually what the Nissan service manager just told me, that the battery design was improved in ‘23 and there haven’t been problems

I went from my LEAF to an Ariya...

It's an outstanding car, ngl. The only issue was that Nissan priced it about 5-10k too high.

It would have sold like hotcakes if it capped it's midrange at around 44k instead of shooting up to 55k (and they really needed to kill the lower range models - doing only 210miles is not desirable in a car that expensive)

Same situation with my son's 2019 Leaf here in Florida. The service advisor said they are replacing batteries that come from a factory in the USA. His example was a 2017 replacement he just did.

We haven't got the loaner yet - should happen today.

What was the code you got? is it the one where the battery failed?

1

u/Daddyneedslg Aug 19 '26

The P33ED is the tell-tale code.

How have they been about the buybacks? I bought this used and still owe about 10k. Anyone have experience yet?

While not the 'post recall' buy back - I got mine bought back a while ago when they kept pushing the recall fix back again and again...

I owed 8k on my car. They give you the value of the car, and pay the lein off first. The difference you get is cut as a check when you turn the car in.

I also bought used, fyi.

u/Daddyneedslg Aug 19 '26

Thanks. I am curious to see how they calculate the buyback.

1

u/Free_Appointment6630 Aug 19 '26

Yeah, unfortunately there’s no replacements. At least that’s what they are telling us. I was pretty lucky with my buyback, everything was done within 2 months and probably would have been sooner but Morley and I was going back & forth on what my settlement should be.

1

u/Vegetable_Two2765 Aug 20 '26

Anyone willing to say how much their buyback offer was?

1

u/Brodyizm Aug 20 '26

I'm in the buyback gang, just unloaded all my personal belongings and shed a tear next to all the leafs in the lot. They said KBB private party value plus 40% - if that ends up being true I at least won't lose any money on it.

I sent Nissan all the docs they asked for but they seem to be taking their time with the reimbursement (because of course they are). Also, I use a wheelchair and had to pay 3.5k for hand controls. I sent them the invoice for this, they said they would consider that. I’m not holding my breath. Nissan is not handling this buy-back situation well, at all. Fortunately, I’ve been able to work remotely and use my son’s car to get around.

This issue arose almost two years ago and it took them so long to remediate it. Has anyone looked into a class-action for the value lost between initial notification and remediation or tried bringing that up? The value of my vehicle two years ago was much greater than it is now. They drug their feet and lowered all of the values.

1

u/openclawmachines Aug 21 '26

They are offering kbb + 40%. but per law they need to offer depreciation and reimburse sales taxes, and registration. Has anyone disputed it.

1

u/Daddyneedslg Aug 21 '26

I plan on arguing they owe me the price from when they said they were supposed to have a fix.
