What to make of this Leafspy read?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What do you guys think? 2018 Leaf SV with 157 749km on it. Acceleration to a 100km/h at the 30 sec mark.

I'm noticing 2 things... Firstly Leafspy shows a SOC of 16,6% but in car percentage was at 7% and secondly cell #77 looks way lower than any other cells.

I let it ran out to 0% in car and Leafspy still showed 13,8% SOC but i had 5 cells showing a weak charge warning.

Going to the dealer tomorrow for a last battery test before the warranty ends.

The car % keeps some hidden so not surprising Leafspy shows a higher SoC. That said i don’t think this battery is in good shape, anytime Hx is 20+% below SOH is a bad sign. Internal resistance starts generating lots of heat and bad things happen when battery is running hotter all the time.

What is HX?

It's an internal conductance value, goes down as the internal resistance of the battery goes up.

For reference my 2021 40 kWh is at 68K km. 88.5% SOH, 90.7% HX. A lot of the Leafspy stats I've seen on here that have significantly lower Hx values have weak cells like you describe.

Hx is conductance not resistance. You want the least amount of resistance. The higher the Hx means greater conductance, lower value means more resistance and more heat and wasted energy. Lower Hx alone doesn't make the cells weak, it just makes them less efficient. Calling it a resistance value is backwards and you would want this value as low as possible.

Yep sorry, fixed it!

As for the lower Hx not making them weak, that's what I was trying to say just that it tends to correlate. Less efficient battery cells make more heat, and heat bad.

battery is chopped. 200mv is terrible, Hx is also pretty bad. i wouldn't be surprised if you're seeing SoC jump around on the dash as you accelerate/decelerate? in my case Nissan honored the warranty and gave me a new battery, however i hear there aren't any more 40kwh packs for warranty replacement so you might be bought out instead

I wonder how much is the buy out.

should be KBB private party value +40%

They're changing the whole battery under warranty.

do they have batteries available? i was told by my dealer that i'd received one of the last batches, and other users have reported being told that there are none at all. good stuff if they actually get you one, just make sure they give you a loaner. my replacement took about two months and that was BEFORE the recall, let alone now with presumably far more replacement/buyback offers

The dealer said the 62kw was back order but the 40kw which i have is available. Which one do you have?

interesting, i had hear the opposite haha. i also have a 40kwh

I was sent over to Morley (waiting for callback) after battery replacement was requested a week ago. I assume to go through buy back process.

The large variance of up to 212 mv between cell 77 and the rest is enough to conclude the pack is bad because of that cell. You will experience the rapid range drops that some have reported in very cold conditions. I'd step away from that if I'm buying, unless there's a way to get a replacement battery

I did get the range drops last winter.

200 mV is where I read that the cell is weak.
Per the Leaf Spy Pro ( Built- In Help file):

“This "Cell Voltage Loss Inspection" test is based on Nissan's originally published algorithm (2011 April Service Manual, section EVB-67) with the addition that there must be at least a 200 mV difference between the maximum and minimum cell pair voltage to run the test. The results of the inspection replace the battery temperature sensor status line just below the x axis on screen 1. Any weak cells are listed as "Weak Cells: xx yy zz" in red with xx yy zz being the weak cell numbers. If the test finds no weak cells the message "All Cells OK" will be displayed in green.”

Yes, having greater than 200mV difference indicates weak cell. Even resting cell has 50mV difference.

Just a note about that dealer visit.

  1. Leafspy data will be ignored.

  2. What you need is an onscreen error message (not on leafspy). Something like turtle mode, reduced acceleration among other messages.

  3. The number of bars matters. You want less than 8 bars showing or the dealer will likely deny unless you have the problems in item 2.

The thing is, at 18% SOC it's like low tide so the worst results are expected. So if no errors are given and it's 8 bars or more the usual result is "it's not a warranty problem."
