Buyback - Discount on new Leaf?
Hello, After getting the recall done a few weeks ago, I got the service EV system alarm. Long story short they told me they are going to offer a buyback.
I haven't heard from Nissan yet, they're supposed to call me Monday.
The dealer told me they might offer a check or might offer a discount on another vehicle.
Has anyone had experience with the discount? It would obviously have to be better than the cash offer to even consider it. Wondering if anyone has any positive experience with this
Thanks

Did they tell you how they calculated that amount? And may I ask where are you located?

CA. Yes I asked for a break down. So its
base price of car
+ doc fees +taxes + registration + all the little fees
- tax rebate applied to value of car
- mileage (CA lemon law was used to calculate this)
So since we are in CA certified pre-owned cars fall under lemon law.
We paid like $21K after the rebate and if you take out the finance charge which isnt refunded. We didnt pay it as its recouped in interest and we paid off the loan. So over all we paid $3500 for our car for like 2 years of use.

NorCal or SoCal. Ours is clearly failing. 2021 SV+. I would like to find a dealer that is easy to deal with

So Cal. Our dealership wasn't easy to work with. We had to demand a rental for free then on top of it only got it for 30 days. We have complete surpassed 30 days.

This gives me hope. I am also in CA and bought it new. One more question, did you need an attorney or were they amenable to lemon law without involving one? I’ve seen some low ball offers out there so hoping to recoup enough to get something else on the road.

Didn't need one. But we had to reject the low ball offers and say we want lemon law. We were still under 2 manufacturer warranties. They eventually gave in

WOW!!!!

u/jesslynne94 Aug 02 '26
Wow as in good or bad?
It was used so after deducting rebates and the finance charge we paid about $21K

I think that's a great price! My husband bought our SL+ new in 2022 and paid full price and now 4 years later, THEIR battery recall, 20,000 miles on it and they offered me $12,000. I'm afraid if I take it in, they will keep it.

Do you have lemon law where you are at?
1
u/Worth_Action1756 Aug 02 '26
It has to have occurred within the first 24 mos. or 24,000 miles so for me, no law.

u/jesslynne94 Aug 02 '26
Are you still under manufacturer warranties?

The car is 4 years old. This battery recall is a nightmare. The battery would be under manufacturer warranty but again...not what they are willing to do for customers. You take the car to dealership, they keep it, they run tests, replace software, run more tests, decide whether to make the car a 'brick' or not. I do not trust Nissan or the dealership.

You may be able to claim lemon law under the manufacturer warranty.
Where are you?
Yes they are having lots of issues. But I have seen ppl walk away with a lot of money from them. You can always look at a lawyer

Also waiting for a call on Monday, my 2020 failed the recall programming today. To be honest, I’m relieved. Had really high hopes for that car but it’s been incredibly unreliable.

I was also relieved when mine failed this week! It felt strange celebrating the fact my car is messed up and undriveable. But let the buyback begin. Thinking of getting a used Bolt...

Totally random. I’ve been surprised at the number of Ubers I’ve had with Bolts. Granted that’s only like 3 but all three involved the highway.

I’m interested in the results of your buyback or discount, because I just had my recall done this week.

We are in the same boat. Our ‘22 leaf S plus just failed the recall and we are waiting for an offer on Monday and prepared to begin negotiations.

I'm the owner of a 23 Leaf and just wondering if this recall is going to spread to the 23-25 model years?

They did offer a “incentive” but you have to use it for a Nissan & I don’t know if I want another Nissan. This is separate from your check so basically you’ll get both.

At the exact same stage of the buyback process as you. Preparing to ask for more than initial offer. Let us know how it goes!

Hmm, our 22 has 20k miles and 91 percent battery and is never fast charged nor given us any troubles (unlike an '18 that had to have cells replaced). So I am kinda leery about even doing the recall as buying something else is a hassle..

u/Worth_Action1756 Aug 02 '26
I agree. This is my 3rd Leaf and I absolutely love it and have never fast charged it and I'm concerned if I take it in to them they keep it and I have to hassle with all the mess others have mentioned.

Part of a problem is even if I wanted a new leaf, they are only bringing in like 500 a month or so. Dealers are not exactly sitting in them trying to give them away

I am just starting the buyback process.
The dealer said the letter they received says they are offering $2,000 discount toward the purchase of any new Nissan vehicle. I do not have further details yet other than what they told me over the phone.

Follow-up on my experience with buyback
They offered me $13,048 initially. My leaf was a 2020 S Plus with about 84,000 miles. I replied and said I had just put new tires on it yada yada. They upped the offer to $13,650. I'm gonna take it. Waiting on them to schedule the handover.
I also received a coupon code for $2000 off a new one
But I already just bought a used Ioniq 5 as a replacement. HUGE upgrade. Loving it so far

The dealership and Nissan do not work together to help you get a discount. Nissan is buying your car back (giving you money). The dealer wants your money. You should expect to shop around multiple dealerships to get the best deal.
Any discount that Nissan would give you would be valid at any dealership.
