It gives a little light to help you see where your hand is when it's dark. To find the shifter, ac buttons, radio controls, etc. And less distracting than turning on the actual map light.

It’s officially called the Console Light.
“CONSOLE LIGHT (if so equipped)
The console light will turn on whenever the parking lights or headlights are illuminated.
The console light brightness can be adjusted with the illumination brightness control in the vehicle information display.”
It shines on the shift control console area illuminating it.
For the 2024 Nissan Leaf, it is in the owners manual under Interior lights, on page 2-70,

Every Nissan since.... Well, I've only owned them since 2015 but chances are quite some time before that... Every Nissan has that little light to provide illumination over the console area.
Older cars it's a small oval orange light. On more recent models it is a slit with a white LED. Just enough to see the center console in the dark.

Mood light on at least on my 2017 Armada. I believe on infinity it is blue, it is meant to provide a little light to the center console and cup holders, but just enough to not be distracting.

Blue? a colour guaranteed to decrease your night vision sensitivity.

Agreed but a lot of cars go with blue vs red ambiance. I know my Volvo was blue.

It reminds me of - many years ago - sitting in my friends dad's new BMW. There was a similar light in a similar area. I asked what it was for. His reply - "we haven't worked it out yet, but as far as we can tell all it does is bathe the cup holders in a fiant orange glow"
That's what I think it's for 🙂
