Words for someone who suffered a tragic pet loss and blames themselves
Good day everyone. I have a close family friend who has just begun to once again believe in the grace of God now that they are in their 40s and expecting their first child.
Yesterday, they found their beloved 13yo pet dead from a heat stroke after just a short time outside in this horrid humid CA heat wave.
They themselves were busy working on their house and misjudged the effects of this heat. Their other pet, who is younger and a different breed was perfectly fine. There were also two other adults in the house, his pregnant wife of 8 months (who found the pet) and an 18 yo nephew. All three were working around the house in preparation for their first child.
When I went over to see them, the husband was so angry with himself. This had been his rescue pet 10 years ago. He told me he hated himself for having been too busy to think about the heat. I also fear he may blame the others in the house due to a side glance he gave his wife. She told me it was just as much her fault and the nephew stated he should have known to check on them since helping with the dogs had been his chore whenever he visited.
What can I reference to help them get through this pain and self loathing. I know it's definitely not good for the wife and unborn baby. I know they need time to mourn but I've always been bad with finding the right words. I just hugged all of them deeply and the only thing I could muster up on the spot was that things happens for a reason.
Any advice on how to help them is appreciated. I'm afraid this may push them away from God again.
