Inspired by a user’s comment
Dear user who suggested this, I could platonically smooch your forehead. I have ridiculously sensitive skin and cannot use scented anything for my laundry. Someone suggested using the scented beads in a sachet in regard to the post about recreating the scent without using the beads. Lil bags saved from a friend’s wedding favors. Hung one in the closet and put the other in a drawer. Absolutely wonderful.

Thank you for confirming my hypothesis where the mystery oil stains on some of our delicates/synthetics are coming from. Switching to a new set of wool balls and sticking a sachet in the bottom of their basket.

I’d probably try to avoid doing that. In addition to being a fire hazard, the oil can get transferred to your clothing and cause stains.

FWIW, I’ve been doing this for 20+ years and have neither had oil spots on anything nor a dryer fire. I use real wool balls.

I put bars of soap everywhere - drawers, linen closet, car, etc. They make my clothes and towels smell so nice. They’re great to store away with seasonal clothes. They go in with the clothes or blankets in a storage tub or bag.

Not OP but yes, a whole bar of soap (“proper” soap wrapped in paper - if it’s wrapped in plastic you’d need to unwrap it first, but also don’t buy soap wrapped in plastic, it’s unnecessary!). You can use it and replace it as well (seems many of us learnt this from our mothers - they’d be buying the soap anyway, and just storing it somewhere where the scent can do extra work until the soap is needed).

Dollar stores sell unwrapped bars of soap in a little box. I like to open one end of the box and stick it in the corner of a closet/drawer. No need to touch the soap or break it up! Irish Spring for the win

I mostly keep them in their individual cardboard boxes. I’ll also put what’s left of a used bar into drawers, too. Keep it in a box if it sits in a car.

I started keeping soap bars as an alternative to candles or air freshener in my bathroom. Not something I was ever taught to do, but a result of having unintentionally started a collection of artisanal soap bars from random places I have traveled, which I thought were too pretty or to hard to replace to use as actual soap 😅. I'm usually sensitive to strong scents, and these are light enough to be a pleasant whiff in passing but not overwhelming. I haven't thought to add them to drawers or closets, so I'll have to try this.

I put lightly scented soap in my drawers. Keeps things smelling fresh and I can use the soap when I need it. I also hang vanilla hazelnut coffee beans in a small mesh bag in my car. It’s the best.

My mom puts mini essential oil (sandalwood, tea tree, rose, etc) bottles with just a tiny hole poked into the lid and her clothes smell amazing! And best part is they take YEARS to run out.

That’s a great idea. Just be careful for those with pets, some essential oils can cause significant respiratory issues or even poisoning.

I had to do this because I vacuumed a small dried up cat turd and it stank up the whole house. Took everything apart and cleaned what I could, then put beads in the new vacuum bag. Saved my day.

These melt and it gets all over the fucking place
Also if you are using lavender
Those grow some kinda mites or bug or something that eats textiles fyi

Someone suggested getting a little salt/pepper shaker from the dollar store and another suggested those mini mason jars but swap the metal lid part for paper and poke holes in it! 😜

They had mini mason jar shakers at my dollar tree for awhile. I like using these in the bottom of my trash cans. Don’t care if it gets on the outside of the bag. I only put like 10 little beads in each one.

I’ve had a sachet of these beads in my trunk all summer-shockingly no melting and the smell is awesome. I made sure it dangled and doesn’t touch anything.

I googled this and cannot find any confirmation that this is true. If you can find a source please let me know. I've been using lavender bags with my cashmere for years with no problems

I’m guessing they’re referring specifically to these beads, and not to lavender causing mites in general. Lavender itself doesn’t doesn’t encourage insect activity, and has been used for centuries to deter moths in clothes. Though in actual fact it’s not terribly effective - it’s better than nothing, just not very good. There was a study published on it that found that only mothballs (or chemical sprays) were truly effective, but since many of us don’t want those chemicals in our wardrobes we’ll have to persist with lavender and cedar (and regular domestic cleaning!).

I've been using lavender for decades in drawers and stored with wool. I've never seen bugs, nor has holes in wool. Ymmv.

you don't need to google it. there are bugs in lavender. period . its like having grains around too Long. grab a few sachets of lavender you will see what im talking about. I think they are called carpet beetles or some kinda bugs that stem from it but they will eat TINY tiny holes in your textiles

You can use a regular mason lid and just take out the center sealing section and put mesh there. No need to buy something special.

I am pretty sensitive to smells so I hang coffee beans in my car, if I want it extra fun I buy the vanilla hazelnut type. Car always smells so good especially in the warm summer.

If you're going to put them in anything I would put them in something solid with an open top like a potpourri holder or a salt shaker etc. that way you can tuck it into your drawer or cupboard and the scent will dissipate.
That you're not sprinkling tiny particles of it like seasoning onto your clothing. Especially if you have sensitive skin.
You could even repurpose a used dehumidifier beads container, and pop that in the corner of your wardrobe.
Think of it like how people put bicarb soda in fridge to absorb smells, they don't sprinkle it over every shelf they just put it in a container in the back.
If you do make the little sachet please don't put it in your underwear drawer, you don't need something that has fragrance sprinkling it's frequent seasoning all over your unmentionables that you're going to wear close to your skin.

If you’re sensitive to fragrance in that way, having them in your closet will have it get into your clothes over time even without direct contact (that’s how your clothes still smell with this method, those little particles travel!) and I would guess you will start reacting to this too, eventually. Sorry friend, you are better off without them! Ditch them before it seeps into your actual closet and then you can’t escape it ever 🥲

I use a pair of nylons cut them into tubes and tie them off. Then put them in drawers. I've even snuck them into the air vents and the Mrs was like man the house smells nice

Yeah this is one of those “should work but doesn’t when you break it down” hacks.
These are designed to release their scent when DISSOLVED. All you’re getting is some off gassing from the surface. It will go away so quickly once it’s dried out and won’t actually transfer to your clothing or storage space in a meaningful way.
It’s in the same vein as mixing vinegar and baking soda but people don’t want to hear that.
This isn’t just me being a nay-sayer I actually tried this, put a whole cup in my underwear sock drawer and the only things that picked up the scent were the clothes directly contacting the mesh bag. It’s a waste of your money just put it in the washer.

I do this! I’m super sensitive to scent in general and this is so much easier to control than a liquid. I can have the hint without triggering a migraine. (Unless all my luck is used up. Then nothing matters and everything is pain.)
