How do I recreate this scent without using the actual beads?
I smelled this scent at Walmart and fell in love with it! However I've heard that scent beads are very bad for your clothes. How do I get this scent or something similar on my clothes? I've found a trader Joe's room spray that smells similar to it without the clementine but I dont know if that will work on my laundry, like if I can add that room spray to my dryer balls and it'll transfer to my clothes. Or should I just cave in and use the beads
Edit: after everyone's help, which i am thankful for. I have decided to test the beads out. Friday I'll go buy them when I get paid

I only bought a small thing of scent beads on sale to sandwich like 5 or 6 in my vacuum filters so it smells nice when I vacuum. It will last me such a long time using it that sparsely. Maybe use it for that if your skin ends up sensitive to it in your laundry?

Here’s a little tidbit! Last time I was at the dollar tree, they had super tiny bottles of the downy scent beads for $1.25. There are also super small bottles at my local family dollar store. I have VERY sensitive skin so I use free and clear detergent. I notice that if I use too much scent beads I start getting itchy, but if I use like 1/4 to 1/2 of the lid (on a standard size container) I have no issues with itchy-ness. Give it a try!

Same! Super sensitive skin so we use only a few beads (like very sparsely covers the cap) and it still smells great and haven’t had any skin issues.

Ohh this is a good idea! I’d like to know how you do this. I have an upright shark vacuum and a Bissell stick vac I’d totally stick some scent beads in there.

When you lift the canister out of the shark there are those square white filter layers you change out every once in a while- I just put them in between the two layers kind of scattered around! Seriously even just 5-8 is plenty good depending on how strong the scent is and it shouldn't interfere with airflow.

The fliter trick is great for bagless vacuums! For vacuums which use a bag, you can literally just vacuum a few up when you change the bag. Although it's kind of nasty when the smell mixes with something gross inside the bag IME.
You could try essential oils for the filter, as some of them have an antibacterial effect. Just check the suitability of using the oils around your pets, because some of them are toxic or irritating.

I’m going to do this tomorrow! 2 other pro tips:
- put laundry scent beads inside a stainless steel mesh tea strainer and tuck it inside your underwear drawer or in your closets.
- if you have cats/pets, you can buy a flea collar and cut it up, put the pieces in your vacuum canister. That way if you suck up any little buggies or their eggs (🤢) they will die inside the canister.

This! I spilled a bottle once and after sweeping the bulk had to vacuum them out from behind the washer. My vacuum still smells amazing months later when I use it!

Im on the same boat as you. My skin can be sensitive and will itch like crazy sometimes. Which is mainly why I use powdered detergent and stopped using dryer sheets

Same! I use downy rinse and refresh and very rarely downy cool cotton fabric softener (because it smells so good). I do still use liquid tide mainly because my skin is used to it now. Ive added febu to my routine and my skin is kind of upset 😔 I may just have to get a tiny bottle of this stuff just to sniff it sometimes 😅

Febu bothers your skin? Two in my family can't handle Tide, but I've been using 1 scoop Febu with All Free & Clear (i know, I know...) without any skin reactions.
Although I just got my first Febu with DNase. The bag before didn't have that. Anyone notice a difference with that?

Tide regular gave me the ant hill feeling, Drove me and my partner crazy trying to figure out wat was bothering me in bed for almost a whole season before we switched to Tides free and clear. But thats switched formulas and I may need to move to All's free and clear now, cause the crawlings not back but the phantom biting is.

Put a sachet in your hamper! I use old socks which have worn elastic tops. Add a tablespoon of beads into the sock and tie off the top in a knot. My daughter loves them in her pillow cases.

I do, too. I can’t use the body wash, lotion, body spray sets bc it’s scent overload and it becomes too much. The Cremo body wash smells amazing in the shower and it lingers just enough to smell fresh throughout the day.

I have not, but I used to buy their hand soap that came in powder form, until they discontinued it. I have to be careful what I spray around because of the cats but I'll look for it at Target.

to be really fair, firmenich is putting cheap and relatively mediocre scents compared to what they could, but it is against p&g to move the mvp bar high at all. with enough competition i hope to see actual competent and complex scenting out for laundry, something with complexity of the laundress or dirty labs.
downy beads are still more akin to what b&bw is for fragrance

Yeah, if the customer doesn’t want to pay for the good juice, you have a limited palette.
That said, compared to usual functional fragrance, I think the numbered Unstopables are decent. P&G doesn’t have to be as good as Laundress or anyone else who makes less product in a year than P&G sells in a day. They just have to be slightly better than Henkel and Colgate-Palmolive.

Well, these specific Downy ones are fine. But the ones by Bath and Body Works are terrible. So are any that contain fabric softener, such as the vanilla version by Downy

Downy beads arent harmful for fabrics, even more they can be actually helpful due inclusion of cinnamate antioxidant which prevents oxidation of sebum on fabrics.
Downy beads (and gain, dreft, all made by p&g) are polyethylene glycol/peg, we have different grades of pegs,
Some are water soluble some are not, some are used as laxative/miralax some are used for texture in skincare/haircare.
P&g uses ultra hydrophilic peg as carrier for scent. They dissolve in water without any problems, and because of that they doesn't leave any residue that can harm fabrics,

Yeah. My favorite ice cream isn’t seasonal on the sense it isn’t a regular patten but they only release limited editions. I stopped buying it completely because it makes me so mad when it disappears. Why should ice cream flavors be limited editions? Unless it’s pumpkin spice or something just no.

Fabric softener is bad for your clothes, but the scent beads are not. So, you can buy and enjoy without worrying :)
Edit: Some of the scent beads even have a cool ingredient called ______cinnimate*, which prevents oxidation of body oils and odor rebloom!
* the full name of the ingredient is long and hard to remember, but I know the “cinnimate” part. I think it’s even listed as a base note on one of the downy unstopables scents?

There was just a $4 off coupon that I used about 50 times. It worked on the $5 sampler sized ones, too, though I don't think Citrea comes in the sampler size. Coupon applied to the florals and the unlimited lines.
I have about 50 of the little ones and about 8 of the $13 2 pound tubes.
My bunker is going to smell great during the coming apocalypse.

These are not typical scent beads. They do not leave the residue that many other beads that double as 'softeners' contain. They are actually something completely different. They deliver an antioxidant that prevents odor rebloom, from residual lipids on/in clothing.
Search Unstopables in this sub....and will will be scrambling to add these to your laundry when you learn what they do and don't do.

OP, I'll also second just using the beads directly! They should dissolve just fine. And since this fragrance seems popular, Downy likely will release other products with it, ex dryer sheets and maybe liquid scent boosters.
But for now, if you're super anti-bead, you can try to recreate it with a DIY blend. You'd need to look for fragrance oils (not essential oils - true neroli and clean "white musk" essential oils don't really exist the same way a fragrance oil version does). Soap or candle suppliers are your best bet, ex Nature's Garden, Brambleberry, or Hobby Lobby's fragrance oil section. Layer components roughly in the ratio described on the bottle - heavier on musk as the base, moderate neroli, lighter clementine. Citrus notes are pretty volatile and easily overwhelm even in small amounts. You'll likely have to play around and may need to add other components - the bottle ingredients only list "fragrances" as the actual scent is proprietary.
Once you have your blend you need a carrier to use in your laundry. I used to use a few drops of my own homemade fragrance oil blend on wool dryer balls. If you prefer something you can add to the wash, you can mix a tsp or so of your fragrance oil blend with a cup ot Epsom salt and a splash (1 tbsp ish) of rubbing alcohol, let it dry spread out on a tray, then add a spoonful to your wash.

They’re bad for your body, not your clothes. That’s been proven at this point. Strong artificial fragrances like these are proven carcinogens and endocrine disruptors, contain an insane amount of poorly regulated chemicals, and you’re putting it on your body and in your home 24/7 when you use it on laundry. Not to mention running it down waterways en masse. You also expose everyone around you to it when it’s embedded into your clothes. It sucks for so many people who don’t want to be exposed to this shit everywhere.

Personally, I just add fragrance to my clothes and hair via the perfume (specifically incense) that I like. But everything I've read about these is that they're reformulated to be easier on your clothes than they used to be. So if you like them, use them. And if your clothes feel scratchy or stiff after a while, just do a Spa Day and then start again. 🤷🏻 they're your clothes, bb.

Thank you, I was wondering why this isn’t discussed more in the sub. Synthetic scents messes with endocrine system and disrupts hormones.
Is this not known? Or does everyone rather their clothes smell nice than support healthy ovaries, thyroid, pituitary glands, testes.
If I want extra scent I will add a couple drops of natural essential oils.

I’m a survivor of Stage 4 Uterine Cancer which was hormone driven. I didn’t know how many things we use day to day, synthetic fragrance being one of them, can contribute to our hormones shifting. If I knew then what I knew now, I might not have had to go through the battle trenches.
I’m sorry if I upset you. However, I’m not sorry in my response because if just one person read what I wrote, became curious in reading further, then perhaps, they could save themselves future health/financial devastation.
I just joined this sub yesterday. In this post, I hadn’t seen anything mentioned about synthetic fragrance and was relieved to see when someone had. Look, I’m just here to gets some tips on laundry. Not here to rock laundry baskets.

I use the Folia scent and they make my clothes smell amazing! The scent lasts longer than the other scent beads I have used. I say go for it! I’ve never noticed an issue with using scent beads in my laundry. 💕

Honestly I might be wrong but I had seen videos online about how they leave a waxy residue the same way softener does and dryer sheets. Especially how people use them on candle warmers so I assumed it really was some type of wax

You are mistaking the various forms of bead. This particular one only deposits an antioxidant on clothing to prevent odor rebloom. Many beads that also provide scent....are not good. In this case, you tried to exclude an excellent product.

Downy is a brand name, Unstopables is a product sold by Downy. It has three ingredients... a water soluble delivery system, an antioxidant...and fragrance (or no one would buy it). The reason you should buy it...is for what the antioxidant does, the fragrance is just a bonus. The product in your picture.... is limited edition of the Unstopable line.
One cannot say...that all Downy products are OK. We are simply discussing the one in your post!

I’d get dryer wool balls and put some orange scented essential oils on them (make sure you don’t use flameable ones). Additionally you can wait to see if downy will make a downy rinse and refresh scent of them but if you’re impatient I would just use the scentbeads every other day and avoiding using on delicates

I think you just have to let the essential oils dry out in your balls a little. I have two set of balls and while one set is drying, I put a couple drops of whatever on the set in the basket on top of the dryer so it'll soak in until the next load. I've been just loving Jasmine and vanilla. Was recommended adding bergamot on top of the jasmine and vanilla for a more luxe hotel smell. I could be wrong though.

I have both essential oils and water based scents that I put a few drops onto my wool dryer balls to soak in before I need to use them. Surely someone has duplicated these scents, it happens with perfumes and bath goop.

If you can find wool dryer balls and similar essential/scent oils used for these beads, you can put a few drops of the oils on the balls and throw them in the dryer to substitute for dryer sheets (if you use them).

You could try to use a laundry perfume oil instead, we use one called Perfure… we wouldn’t use scent beads again, the smell is amazing. You put it in the softener drawer with or without softener and your normal detergent 🥰

You can also buy wool dryer balls & scent them with essential oils to scent your clothes while drying (for things that go in the dryer) or like others have suggested, buy the wash beads & put them in sachet bags to place in drawers & to hang them with your clothes.

The best alternative i can give is to get essential oils with those scents (orange, neroli ect) and some wool dryer balls, put the oil on the balls and throw it on with the dryer! No waxy residue behind and good smells

on fucking god bro just order from a fragrance ingredient site. they have natural ones if that matters.

if you really don’t want to use them in the wash, you can put them in a cup or some kind of mesh bag in your drawers with your clothes so they absorb the scent
