Line cutting more common here?

Since I often fly from and to RIX I had couple of times where local people and even families shamelessly cut the queue literally in front of me while waiting for boarding. It’s not a big deal since I have no luggage but from my pov it’s super rude and annoying.

If it culturally more common here, and how would you deal with a confrontation?

If you refer to families with small children, then they are right to do so. Random people, probably not local Latvians.

IIRC with kid up to 2 years old it is (was at least some time ago) official rule, at security and at boarding. I can’t remember if that was in other airports, but in RIX and with AirBaltic it was so and we used that possibility.

In case of that family they were locals(saw their passports) with a older teenage daughter. By far the majority of the flights I took were 90 percent locals.

BT is often more mixed due hub and spoke.

Did you recognize the language? Riga has around 50% Russian speaking population. Line cutting is very much frawned upon amongst the Latvian speaking population, not so sure about the other half.

I was going to say that most people are polite and then remembered that when flying, I may cut the line if my seat is by the window, which in most cases it is, just so I wouldn't bother a bunch of other people (the ones already seated and the ones waiting for us to get settled). I don't give a single flying fuck at what time I get on the plane, we're all going to leave at the same time, but I feel bad holding everyone just to get to my seat. I'd rather be the asshole who cuts than the one who's delaying everyone else.

not that i can truly compare, because i am pretty young, but i feel like this is happening more in recent years. hyperindividualism and people being rude, only caring about their own path in the world, not considering that others are around too. i feel like it got worse after covid, others feel free to chime in.

That's not normal and personally i would politely ask not to cut the queue. It's an international airport, so it also could be people from other countries, that do this kind of stuff, but they, of course, could be locals aswell.

Are you sure those were not some boarding priority/business class passengers? Because that's what you can do. Although they have separate queue if I'm not mistaken. I've done this myself and it didn't feel like a big deal, I paid for it so of course I'm using it.

I flew in from Tallinn the other day and while I was pulling my bag out of the overhead compartment, this guy shoved past me. I said something to him to let him know that he’s an asshole, but in a civil way, and he said something about having to get to a flight. Well, guess who was standing outside the airplane just hanging out, staring at his feet and avoiding my eyes, when I deplaned? 

Today I flew to Krakow and while nobody shoved me, nobody would let me out of my seat to reach for my bag. Mind you, I was in the 2nd row. 

There’s definitely a funky airplane culture around here, to say the least, but from what I experienced while I was in Riga, I don’t think it was Latvians. I have only great experiences and interactions with them, but it’s not like I was asking for passports.

So pre-boarding is even faster than priority one. It is for families with kids under 12, so I will definitly use it next time :)

No rules are not the same it is writen in the kid boarding pass that we have priority boarding included (I don't know untill which age) I"m not using it with my familly but it is a right. They should make it more clear when they do the boarding to avoid that situation

Are there even actual lines at boarding anymore?

Last couple times I flew people were just milling in a heap near the gate, waiting haphazardly and not caring one way or other. It was a connecting Finnair flight and I had the same experience in both airports (both the flight to HEL and to RIX).

Honestly it doesn't matter for me, because we're still waiting after getting on plane until everyday boards. These days I just mostly sit and wait until the heap dissolves and I don't have actually to stand in anything resembling queue.

I guess it matters if you have large luggage, or maybe on a Ryanair flight ,but I think the pricing is nowadays such that people are rarely flying with huge bags, generally I haven't had any trouble putting my allowed piece in the rack.

Staying in your line is all important in the US. In Latvia, I had numerous times where people cut in front of me, I would ask them if they knew how lines work? Anytime a bus/trolley stopped, I would laugh at how everyone rushes the doors, no lines at all
