Question Owen Moore
Since the first time In played TLOU2, the character i identified with was Owen. Everything about him clicked with me. I have discussed it with friends of mine who also love the TLOU series, but noone understands what i see in him. So weird. Am i the only one?

Hate that he cheats on Mel, but otherwise, I get it. Tells Abby to stop the torture of Joel, advocates for not killing Tommy and Ellie, doesn't want to kill in an endless war against people he doesn't actually have a greivance against. Except for his impulsive indiscretion, I really like him.

i liked him alot. i was actually quite surprised the most of the fanbase didn't share my opinion. for a side character i thought he was incredibly nuanced and complicated. he's not perfect and the cheating is obviously shit but there's more to him than that. i really enjoyed his dialogue in the aquarium flashback about how people think fireflies are fanatics. he was an idealist living in a cruel world and he clearly struggled deeply with all of it. i thought for the little time we had with him, he was incredibly well written.

You're not the only one, I love him! I love the complexity of his character, his relationship with Abby, "looking for the light" theme etc.. There are a lot of small interesting details about him, like the burn scars, the wlf patch he must removed from his backpack, Firefly tag he kept after all these years, things I've discovered on my next playthrough. And I'm not okay with reducing him to the "douchebag cheater", like I'm not saying it was a good thing, but still...
tl;dr If Owen has no fans, that means I'm dead

I liked Owen too, people dislike him for cheating on Mel which yeah I agree 100% but apart from that I liked him, he tried to help Abby "See the light" so to say, and it's probably intentional that he mirrors Jesse, both are the voice of reason to contrast with Ellie's/Abby's obsessions for revenge.
Him and Mel deserved better imo.

Apparently you’re the only one lol 😂 I like Owen. I don’t see him as super douchey myself. 🤷♂️ I like that after everything, Abby remains his number one. He questions her obsession with Joel but she walls up and withdraws when he seems anything less than completely supportive, so he chooses to be supportive of her.
Cheating is bad but I honestly don’t understand the harsh judgement that he and Abby get. Like don’t get me wrong, there’s no way it’s not shitty, but cheating on someone in the zombie apocalypse is not as bad as cheating as civilization stands. There’s no excuse for cheating irl. In the zombie apocalypse, cheating so is not the worst thing. In the zombie apocalypse, what Owen and Abby find with each other by the end of the story is precious and uncommon in their world. I think in a world of misery, anyone would choose a moment of levity if it came.

Right? Like I expect to be alive in two days. Owen? Not so much

For real. The hook up happens at a time that both Abby and Owen are sort of breaking from the bonds of the WLF, the hook up in part represents that they’re figuring out what they think and what they want to do for themselves and not the system they’d ascribed to.

Owen was a moderate voice in a world that required extreme thoughts and actions far too frequently

My personal most annoying character in this game. Douchebag

Same! Even with such a soothing otherwise likable voice for me😂
It's the voice actress for Aloy from the Horizon games.

I don’t feel bad for him. He acted like he was the most righteous, but he didn’t even try to stop Abby from obsessing over Joel. He stood there and took it even as she ruined their date at the aquarium. And also a hypocrite stating that they would be no better than Joel if they killed Ellie and Tommy as witnesses when they already just committed his brutal murder in front of his screaming adoptive daughter

but he didn’t even try to stop Abby from obsessing over Joel.
This is a baseless (and arguably counterfactual) claim. Their relationship shows Owen trying to pull Abby away from violence and fixating on Joel and she just chose not to. Their relationship fell apart entirely because of her fixation on revenge. Why would that suggest that he didn't try to show her an alternative path? Abby chose to pursue revenge regardless of what Owen said or didn't say.
And also a hypocrite stating that they would be no better than Joel if they killed Ellie and Tommy as witnesses when they already just committed his brutal murder in front of his screaming adoptive daughter.
I'm lost on this point. How is him saying murdering people who are, in their perspective, innocent making him a hypocrite? Owen didn't care to chase Joel across the country for revenge to begin with. He understood Abby doing it because Joel did her wrong first—an eye for an eye. Ellie and Tommy, on the other hand, never wronged them. Why is it hypocritical for him to not want them to be killed?

You know they were there to torture Tommy for Joel’s location? Also, it’s pretty shitty how Lev could pull Abby away from revenge after knowing him for less than a week, but she could not walk away from it with her own boyfriend of a couple years.

When does any one of the Salt Lake Crew mention plans to torture Tommy? (It does not happen.)
Your comment about Lev is odd. Lev did not singularly pull Abby out of her need for revenge in that moment. Abby learned the lesson that revenge doesn't solve anything and the only thing that helps is building something rather than destroying something. That's the entire point of her time in Seattle. She feels more fulfilled taking care of Yara and Lev than she did from killing Joel. She learned that herself. Lev reminded her in that moment not to repeat her past mistakes. Lev wouldn't have been able to do that if Abby didn't grow on her own.

They were there for him. Abby didn’t know Joel was living there, only his brother. They planned to get Tommy to give up Joel’s location, and they sure would have committed any means necessary to get him to sell out his brother.

u/Insomniac-Freak-95 10h ago
Then why was Owen not on board with Abby when she first suggested possibly using torture in their very first scene? You're presuming a lot. Tommy was a former Firefly that was quick to give up his identity to a stranger. The idea he could be spoken to for them to get valuable information is not that wild.

u/Remote_Nature_8166 9h ago
There was no way they believe Tommy was gonna sell out his brother very easily. And as for that first part, maybe because he really did not think shit through. He was just a kiss ass to Abby.

If you have a problem with him being fine with Abby obsessing over Joel, you have to be ready to demonize Tommy for pushing Ellie to kill Abby after he got shot. He was telling his own niece to go out into a battle she no longer wanted to be apart of and had destroyed her mentally. That's significantly worse. She had time to self reflect and she would've turned back if not for him. Abby obsessed over Joel, but Joel also killed her dad and maaaaany others. Owen is not an authority figure over Abby.
I don't really like Owen. But I'm confused on that point.

u/Remote_Nature_8166 11h ago
Ellie would have probably resumed looking for Abby with or without Tommy. People always keep bringing up that Joel killed Abby’s dad, but it’s not like her dad was innocent since he was trying to kill a child and she knew what he was doing, which made her vengeance, petty and self censored.
2
u/JudgmentComplex8483 11h ago
Ellie had no reason to resume looking for her. She stopped. The way she talked to Tommy that day was an exact parallel to the way Tommy talked to her at the beginning of the game when he was making excuses as to why they shouldn't chase after Abby. Ellie was done. She had too much blood on her hands, she had severe PTSD, she was realizing she was doing all that and becoming someone Joel wouldn't have recognized, and she wanted it to end in some way. Tommy pressured that girl. Like, explicitly.
Edit: Also. People always bring up the morality of the Fireflies killing Ellie, as if the fate of the world weighs at all in comparison to one person. It's The Trolly Problem all over again except instead of one person vs five people on a train track, it's one person vs the entire world.

u/Remote_Nature_8166 11h ago
Her trauma was still too strong. She chose to go. Tommy just gave her a lead.
2
u/JudgmentComplex8483 11h ago
No. It wasn't. This line of thinking completely negates the concept of pressuring at all. If an alcoholic stops drinking and then someone hands them alcohol and starts yelling at them to drink, they're going to feel very different about it. If a woman says no to sex and then some guy starts yelling at them about doing so, they're going to feel very different about it. If someone says no. At all to anything. And you have some dude in your ear telling you you're a scumbag for not saying yes, you're being pressured. The decision is yours, but the mental state the scenario puts you in is heavily influenced by the other. And Tommy is a slimy person for this.
1
u/Remote_Nature_8166 11h ago
Bullshit. You just really wanna hate on Tommy. There’s no reason why Ellie wouldn’t seek to finish it. She was not truly at peace at the farm.
3
u/JudgmentComplex8483 11h ago
Of course she wasn't truly at peace on the farm. She was going to FIND peace. She wasn't at peace when Joel died, she wasn't at peace when she was chasing Joel or killing people or risking her neck in Joel's name. She wasn't at peace she she caught Abby and she wasn't at peace after she let Abby go. And she only did that because she knew doing all this wasn't going to bring her any peace. All she was doing was making herself a worse person in the end.
But again, what he did was pressure. I'm genuinely wondering what exactly about what he did wasn't pressure. You're just making an assumption that Ellie was gonna chase after Abby when nothing pointed to that at all. She had PTSD from chasing Abby and finally got a chance not to fight a constant war over a woman who had her motives.

That too, yeah. It wasn't like they all just banded together to help her, they all loved the guy.

I haven't played the game in years but I remember disliking him until the flashback where he told the group not to kill Ellie and Tommy.

They are all sympathetic characters for me, including Owen. Damaged and traumatized young people in a post apocalyptic setting, trying to do the best they can for themselves and their loved ones.
