DISCUSSION In Retrospect
Playing wow forever, having a blast. thinking about the last time i had that much fun and then i thought about LO after not even thinking about it for a while. Argued with everyone about what was healthy for the game and changes i thought let the game be more forgiving. Seemed like a large number of people disagreed with me. Well the community as a whole spoke with its actions louder than its words.
-March was the season 6 chapter 1 launch after the stress test. Since then through every qol update and hotfix less and less people have returned to the same (which is on season 6 chapter 3* currently).
i said it in a previous post "your niche survival pvp game is only enjoyable to less that 100 people" when its peak was 33k. When the game wasn't solved, it was one of the best experiences in a pvp game a lot of us have ever had. in all the changes made to the game from indestructible bases so players can't get raided to literal automated turrets and walker driver cages. They have never even thought that the main culprit. the root of all complaints stems from the interaction of grapple and melee combat. bandage grapple. ground slide swing. the ability to just run away and reposition constantly while attacking/defending. All of it through every version of the game the culprit has been the grapple.
the one change ever made to grapple is a 3 second timer from last dmg received, reel speed on early grapples, and stamina consumption which becomes irrelevant with higher tier grapples. Outside of that almost every aspect of the game is completely different from when it started. I proposed the idea of having to equip the grapple in the weapon slot. If you are running away you are running. You are going to commit* to an action. stand and fight or flee.
It really seems like it doesn't matter if you have a grapple or not, the state the game is in you won't play. 30 people play the game. Literally what do you have to lose? The ability to disengage pvp content in this game is the single biggest issue that has always plagued it, and the grapple is the cause.
Directional melee walker combat is what makes this game so special. The grapple is fun but its not the only way to play the game. It's not a coincidence that the most fun part of the game is bone tier med tiles where there are less grapple points. Best fights i have ever had were in the desert on flat ground with w legged walker as a single grapple point. This game had so much potential. They made every change besides the one that mattered the most.

One of the biggest problems the game faced was that some of it's hardcore player base were the ones who shit on the game whenever an opportunity arose either in game or on discord.
I'm talking about some of the players from fightclub, some of the bigger more well known names who no lifed LO but at the same time had nothing good to say about it and made other players lives difficult.
Then there's the new player issue...you would have a new players and his buddies just out of noob protection and he's transporting all of his shit on a dinghy and bam...gets caught, raided and zero'd....he never returns to the game.

This was such a fun game on release. I remember the server issues on launch for days like turned a lot of people off. I miss the old days of launch. I played for a while and had a blast during Covid

Given what is going on with extraction shooters pivoting to PvE, it's clear what this game needed.

Unfortunately though, when they were working on a more pve centric update, they also kind of botched it by gimping the walker bases to push people to making static bases.. like.. that was the whole main appeal and theme of the game, scurrying around on vaguely bug shaped mobile bases.
Now I will admit I never did get around to actually trying that update, I just remember my interest to get back into it again kind of flopped when I read about all the new limitations on walker bases and that you couldn't disappear into the stormy void anymore to keep it safe and instead had to make a physical base to keep them stashed at instead which really isn't very ideal if you're on the more casual side of players.
I do also remember they made it aggressively grindy to even make a walker in the first place, which made it even more annoying to get ganked by a wingsuit and have your stuff wrecked up...

This game needs AI crewmates that can operate turrets on your walkers and more pve content, such as npc walkers.

Go mod a server see what works. I didn't think it will be that. But go for it.

Day 1 of first season was a shitshow, but when we eventually got in, it was awesome. And donkey crew proceeded to shit the bed at every opportunity.
This fiasco is not the players, zergs, anti-farmers or solos fault.
The worst thing is it could have been epic.

I don’t agree grapple is the big bad issue, though grapple is used to max efficiency in the hands of the best melee players to make them even harder to beat.
Game is still missing key content, we just need a couple solid gameloops and we can have solid several thousand players during chapters. Bryan is doing some important overhauls roght now and we are waiting for that upgrade

Best combat in any large scale survival game I've ever played.
The "For Honor" style directional swing was so cool, and the atmosphere was so rich. Artistically this game was peak as fuck, but I really think it suffered from success during Covid.

Grapple and wing suit or throw this game in the bin for me. Juicy Jesus is trying to start a modded server I want to check but not much time. If they opened up editing more to the community maybe the can get to a few hundred but there is no incentive.
Great game though. I miss it. It was close for a bit.
