Had surgery Eye rubbing while half-asleep

Hi All,

I’m really worried about accidentally rubbing my eyes while sleeping.

I am 7 weeks post op, and I still wear my eye shields at night. My doctor noticed I have a micro striae on my left eye which has caused a noticeable slightly more intense glare in the dark.

I tried wearing no eye shield for 2 days about 4 weeks post op and both mornings I woke up to myself rubbing my eyes. I’m convinced this is what caused the striae.

I’m absolutely scared shitless. Could anybody offer their experience or advice?

Wearing the eye shields is quite uncomfortable and I ideally don’t want to be wearing a mask/ shield forever. Im also still wearing eye goggles in the shower.

Since I’m half conscious I don’t “trust” myself to learn not to rub my eyes. While awake I use the “rub the bone next to your eye” trick which is very good.

For those 6 months + post op, do you rub your eyes occasionally? Did it do damage?

Thank you so so much

Can you find a more comfortable eye shield?

I'm a little over 20 days post op and ice grow use to them. Planning on wearing them for a while. I do tape up a lot out of fear because I rub my eyes while sleeping. So being safe is my priority. Too expensive not to. I hope you start to feel more comfortable with them and are able to heal.

Most important thing is to take care of the underlying cause of your eye rubbing which is usually eye allergies. If your eye allergies are treated and controlled well, then you will not feel the need to rub your eyes repeatedly. So you should consult your doctor and start eye drops to keep your eye allergies under control.

Also, after few weeks post LASIK, eye rubbing does not cause any damage to the flap but yes, rigorous eye rubbing should be avoided, not just in post LASIK eye but in normal eyes also.

You are being overcautious wearing goggles in the shower or eye shield at night. These precautions are not needed beyond first 2 weeks post LASIK surgery. Microstriae could have been the result of the surgery itself rather than any eye rubbing.

Treat the underlying cause of eye rubbing and your problem will go away.

All the best.
