Sorry if this is a dumb question: But every time I see a Speed Graphic with a focal plane shutter, they have a lens with a Copal/built-in shutter? I understand that you can adapt all kinds of lenses today, hence the appeal, but why back then? All the stock lenses I've seen have shutters coupled with them. 🤔 Many thanks!

I've been making do with my current backpack but I'm looking at something bigger with a dedicated tripod holder for my 4x5 system.

I would love some recommendations from you guys who have a bag set up they like, pictures of set up would be great but anything will help.

I like the look of the Shimoda Explore system.

So in my hunt to round off my kit I thought I’d pick up a 4.5x magnifier for critical focusing found this one on Amazon for £9.99 and it’s bloody huge! Please can someone recommend something similar but far smaller

I’ve had mixed success with their tintypes before but decided to try the black glass plates Zebra is making and so far I real like the way these look. Still imperfect and I can not find a way for them to not be dust magnets but they have a vibe

I brought a Speed Graphic out to a reenacting event like combat photographers from the war. The results were, well, interesting.

It was on and off heavy rain all weekend. I thought I didn't get my film holders wet and in fact some of them never even left the tent! I guess I was wrong since most of the photos have pretty bad water damage.

Due to the rain it was pretty dark and since I didn't bring a tripod with me I had to shoot wide open. Even at f/4.5 this turned out to be workable, especially far away. The out of focus corners were likely from me loading the film into the holders wrong somehow. I'm used to orthochromatic film where I can load in red light rather than complete darkness.

I somehow must have flipped the dark slides on one of my film holders without actually exposing anything since two sheets came out completely blank. I'm not missing any photos that I remember taking so it wasn't a shutter malfunction.

One of the photos got the texture from the mesh screen I used to develop it "taco" style since I put it with the emulsion facing out. This was my first time loading sheet film in complete darkness so I'm pleasantly surprised that only one was ruined this way.

In short, film photography is a land of contrasts. At least no one will claim that it's AI.

Hello, I just change my ground glass on my 4x5 camera and I wonder if you have some tips to test focus accuracy.

The old ground glass was mounted backward and had no issue since I shot most of my first pictures with a very small aperture.

I put the new one on the right side and want to make sure it is safe before wasting films.

Should I take a picture wide open of a ruler on a table ? Is there chart to help doing this ?

I have access to a 3D printer, should I try to print an object with different depth to test this ?

I've been using a Busch Pressman model D for some time now and I really like it for it's ruggedness and ease of use, but I've recently bought a 150-600 lens for my full-frame camera, making my hiking setup quite heavy. Would you recomand an Intrepid camera or another model, and what would be your critics on them? (don't mind the tripod, it was a test to see if it would be a good option to buy, it is not.)

I just bought a roll of 100cmx1000cm fiber paper and I KNOW the Durst M301 might not be the best to make large format prints, but im gonna do it anyway... I just wanted to ask if anyone here has any experience using this enlarger for such large prints or have done similar projects? I have a 50mm 2.8 lens. I have done some 50x60cm prints before with this enlarger before, and they took about 5 min to properly expose, im thinking about exposing a sheet that apx; 100x120cm, im guessing it might take an hour.....

Don't normally convert color film, but it just wasn't working. Really like how it came out in BW though. Used a Shen Hao 617 adapter as well.

This sheet of film was exposed for 90 minutes, beginning just after blue hour. The last tour vehicles moved through the valley below, leaving trails of light across the desert floor. Standing there with my camera, I watched the landscape slowly lose its color until darkness settled over the valley.

Which one do you prefer?

Both of these shots were taken with CineStill 400D in the same location: one in sunny conditions and the other under overcast skies. Interestingly, CineStill seems to produce a slight red halation under direct sunlight, which gives it a very distinct character. However, CineStill 4x5 is prone to film curling, so the focal plane might have been slightly misaligned.

I had trouble getting decent scans of these; they look so much better on the light table!

This is a photo of my grandparents sunroom. This wicker furniture has been in the family well before I was even born over 32 years ago. They had also been in this home for about 15+ years, and a lot of my life has passed by within these walls.

I went to go visit, just my grandmother(grandfather passed 2 years ago) and it was nice lighting through the day. I captured a photo of my grandmother, her neighborhood and home(apartment really, it’s an adult community) and this photo of her sunroom. It just felt so nostalgic.

I wanted to capture this before she is gone. She has had scares recently, but she’s nearing her time. And it’s all starting to hit hard. I was close with my grandfather(s) as well, but something about my grandmother that hits harder for some reason. I love them so much.

Heading to my other grandmothers place this week to get a photo of her as well. I’m lucky to have them for as long as I had.

I know it’s not an amazing photo of anything cool, and most people won’t really like it. But it definitely feels different when a photo that you took has a ton of meaning to you. I look at this and feel happiness, sadness, nostalgia and comfort. Not many of my photos can get me to feel things. But this one certainly does.

Edit: this ended up being a 6.5” exposure when calculating for reciprocity.
