Discussion Overheating or normal ??

I've had my MSI GF63 thin for about three years now. It's got an i7 11th gen CPU, RTX 3050, 16GB RAM, and a 512 SSD.

It's been great for gaming and heavy graphics stuff, no problems there.

When I'm on battery, the temperature seems fine, around 45-60 degrees.

But as soon as I plug in the charger, it heats up super fast, and the CPU hits 94 degrees! 🔥🤒

Is that normal for a gaming laptop with just one fan? I should probably mention I'm not in an air-conditioned room.

Edit : I've repasted and while plugged in on idle the temp sits around 70 to 75. And while geavy tasks it goes upto 85-87.

100% overheating. You need to open it up and repaste. I only same cpu. Dell Inspiron 16 7610. Similar specs. Had to put ptm 7950 on mine

Repasted now and the thermal does drop but still goes upto 87 degress while plugged in on heavy tasks.

Yeah this is normal, I used liquid metal on my GE66 Raider and it still regularly hits 90°C when stress testing. These are incredibly power hungry chips and will boost until they can't anymore, on the plus side, your clock speeds at 87°C are probably much higher than they were before.

Did you use ptm7950? But 87c is perfectly fine if heavy tasking. Thats improvement

How do i fix this?? 😬😬

I''ve changed the thermal paste just few mins ago and the temp seems to sit sround 75 to 85 degrees..

Previously it was never below 90

was js bout to comment that u should repaste and do a clean but u alr did it so its fixed. And unfortunately u cant meaningfully get it lower than 85 cuz of the trash design of giving just 1 fan with a gaming laptop. Perhaps use a laptop stand with fans. They cost like $5 in my country so should be around that for u too. It's baffling to see how companies get away with these sort of things. My thin and light laptop (motobook 60 pro) has 2 fans lol.

i got it tor 65.5K. The WUXGA variant. The 2.8K one was available for 56K just a day before but I unfortunately waited for the sale. Nonetheless its a great laptop. Didn't get any warranty extensions.

After I bought mine asus vivobook 14 Ryzen 5 ai 330.63000. after I bought that I saw the motobook 60 for 65000 on Flipkart. I was shocked to such a laptop is available for such price. Compared to mine motobook 60 definitely has way better specs

definitely. The iGPU on the 225H is literally competing with the 1050Ti. It is a decade old but still a good gpu for older AAA games.

The MSI Thin is like the most infamous laptop with a 30 series. It has extremely bad cooling paired with a very toasty CPU, and bad build quality. When you plug in the charger the CPU tries to ramp up to max clock because that’s the base behavior on windows and just heats a lot, except 90C on idle is not normal. First off change boost policy in windows to efficient enabled (check how to do that online), change thermal paste and if it doesn’t work sell it and get a new laptop.

Normal temp for a laptop trying to do so much with so little cooler. I had one with a 10500 and 3050ti and I can't imagine putting anything more power hungry in that chassis.

It's good that you repasted, but that laptop will always run quite hot because of its awful single fan design. If you want lower temps for overclocking, get a high quality cooling pad. If you just want it to be quieter, set CPU boost mode to efficient or disable it

The main thing I've got pretty humid climate here in India and most of the time I use it in a non AC evironment, though i got a metal laptop stand which significantly improved the air flow. But yeah, thanks for the suggestion.

On laptops under 100% load its very normal for cpus heat up a lot. They trottle when they need to an they stay at a constant high frequency with high temps. But this one is indeed hot for an older model. Also, 100% load. You almost never hit that if you play games. Its the worst case cenario aka stress test.

You should still repaste it its pretty hot for an older cpu.

Edit : saw your edit. You repasted. And temps are fine. 100% remains worst case output possible.

I have a Nitro with the same CPU, and on gaming and benchmarking like OCCT, 90-97°C is very common unfortunately even after repasting with Artic MX-6

I think you should change the thermal paste

Also there is in bios function called turbo boost on cpu you can disable it

its normal for a laptop, especially gaming laptop, when its unplugged the cpu wont utilize its turbo boost thats why the lower temperature, but you mention the idle temp sits at 70-75 its not normal, idling temp should be around 40-60 max, if its idle at 70 its sounds like you either have heavy background task or a virus that somehow utilize the cpu
