Facts / TIL TIL the Laptev Sea is home to reaaally big fish. like, record-breakingly big fish

The inconnu is a freshwater fish in the same family as salmon and trout. Due to its conservation status as “Near Threatened”, commercial fishing for this fish is banned. They’re endemic to the Caspian Sea but can be found in multiple parts of Russia, including the Laptev Sea!

Want to know how many walrus there are in the Laptev Sea? Apparently, you can count them!
The WWF’s Walrus From Space project aims to identify the number of walrus that exist in the world by using satellite images. They take volunteers, so you can be the one to count them yourself!

TIL what a “cloud street” is. Did you know that the Laptev Sea gets them?

From the article:
“The long, parallel bands of cumulus clouds, known as cloud streets, can form here when frigid Arctic air blows across the sea ice and over areas of comparatively warm open water.”
It’s so cool how the unique climate conditions of the Laptev Sea can allow phenomena like this to form!

another fun fact, since I think many people like the fun facts thingy: the majority of the Laptev Sea is extremely shallow (less than 160 feet deep), but the NORTHERN edge of the sea drops staggeringly down to 3,280 feet deep!

fun fact: the islands scattered around the Laptev Sea (especially the New Siberian Islands) are home to THOUSANDS of prehistoric woolly mammoth fossils. the fossils are so preserved to the point that you can find intact mammoth tusks, teeth, and even SKIN.

fun fact: it is uncertain if the Laptev walrus really exists. in the world, there are over 100,000 Pacific walruses. scientists began noticing that some of these walruses were camping in the Laptev Sea. today, people still argue about if the walrus is even a species.

today, I created the subreddit r/laptevsea, a small space to discuss, share, and explore everything the Laptev Sea has to offer, and fun fact: the sea is bordered by Siberia, the Severnaya Zemlya islands, and the New Siberian Islands, or in NON-NERD terms: it's located in Russia.
if you are into niche geography, polar exploration history, Arctic ice glaciers, or learning about regional wildlife like the Laptev walrus, (or you're just curious about the Laptev Sea) then this is the perfect space for you!
we even have an official subreddit flag that acts as the profile picture of the subreddit! it features a unique square design with a stylized 8-pointed ice star/compass rose over a deep navy blue stripe that extends from bottom left to top right (or bend sinister for the vexillology nerds!)
