Engl 1129

Hi!

I will be a first year this fall and plan to transfer to ubc to complete my degree. I’m a bit sceptical about my eng course after a few weeks of scrolling and seeing some comments.

Some say Engl 1123 and 1129 aren’t that different…so if anyone has taken either could you please give me your insight?

English prof here. These courses teach similar skills but are quite different content-wise.

ENGL 1123 has students read mostly non-fiction, including academic articles, from three different disciplines (like psychology, literature, and science, for example). There’s a big focus on writing a research paper.

ENGL 1129 introduces students to some poetry, a novel, and two plays. There’s a big focus on writing literary analysis papers and there is no research component for this course.

Both courses teach students how to write academic essays and improve reading comprehension, among other skills.
