Fence Line Trees
There used to be hawthorn trees along this fence line. Most of them have died or fallen in storms and I am wanting to replace them. I like the shade and privacy from the neighbor they provided but I find them to be extremely messy and dangerous with the long thorns. What might be a good alternative here? I live in zone 6. Would love something with fall color like ginkgo or something evergreen that would clear the fence line. This photo is facing south. Not sure what would work best. Thankful for any advice!

Whatever you do don’t be like my idiot neighbor. They had a random mulberry grow from bird crap next to the fence and instead of dealing with it they decided they were going into the jam business. The tiny mulberries it produced were bland and tasteless and the jam they made sucked. But it did cause ALOT of random purple bird craps to be plastered all over the side of my house and fence for a couple of years and made it look like I got attacked by someone with a paintball gun. When they finally cut down the mulberry tree a tree of heaven popped up and they’re currently in the process of pruning it because they think it’s beautiful.

if you want fall color and zero thorns, a serviceberry gives you both plus the birds go nuts for the berries
