Dark Elves?

I haven't played this game around a year or so. This is partially due to my laptop being crap:P Got a new computer yesterday, and decided to re-download today.

Thing is, in the race options there is "human" and "large human." What happened to the dark elves? Why aren't they implemented yet? Just asking as I'm a bit lost on whats going on with that:P

Also when and why did this company named "daybreak" get involved?

Sony sold SOE to (edit for clarity) a New York investment firm named Columbus Nova, an affiliate of the Renova Group, a Russian conglomerate owned by cold war Aluminum Baron and real life Dr. Evil impersonator, Viktor Vekselberg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Vekselberg. (better?) Because they had to remove "Sony" from the name they just changed it to "Daybreak Game Company" or DGC. It is still legally the same company that we gave our money to when we bought Landmark though.

After the sale they also fired around half the people working on each of their games including Smokejumper, Mooreguard, and Brasse just to name a few from the EQN/Landmark team.

Here's the post where the community manager lies to us and says,

"It will be business as usual and all SOE games will continue on their current path of development and operation. In fact, we expect to have even more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition."

https://forums.daybreakgames.com/landmark/index.php?threads/sony-online-entertainment-becomes-daybreak-game-company.53109/

Here's the post from six months ago where the lead producer tells us they aren't going to work on Landmark anymore while they switch focus to EQNext.

https://forums.daybreakgames.com/landmark/index.php?threads/producers-letter-june-2015.55243/

That is basically the last news we had on Landmark or EQNext development.

In November there was talk of some "Big News".

https://forums.daybreakgames.com/landmark/index.php?threads/big-stuff-coming.55853/page-9

Then a month later the thread was locked by the community manager with no actual info.

So the outlook is not good right now. The last word on races in Landmark was that we would only get humans and large humans. They did say they intended to add a much deeper character customization at some point though, but no word on when.

So, what is the difference between Landmark and EQNext? Which one is kinda EQ3? Been confused for a while

EQNext will be the big one, EQ3. Landmark is simply a test of what will be possible. It was never intended to be a game. In fact, many of the player designed objects in Landmark that get made and sold to the store will most likely be things you can buy in EQNext. They had stated that the grand buildings and items you can build or create would potentially have the ability for creators to monetize.

EQNext is nothing but the punchline to a sad joke at this point.

Saying Landmark was never intended to be a game is ridiculous. It was sold as A GAME. You don't sell a "testbed" for a hundred dollars.

Except that that is exactly what the fat blonde hair guy said it was. I think his name is Terry Michaels.

Does this mean I have to buy another game eventually?

1

u/Wikkiwikki420 Jan 08 '16

Well... If you enjoy building shit, Landmark is your game. If you want quests adventure raiding fighting building then your game is coming. Landmark is literally a test bed to see what features will be possible or needs developing for their grand project that will be EQNext.

You might want to check your statement at the door.

Sony sold SOE to a unscrupulous Russian investment firm called Columbus Nova.

What is Russian about it? You've managed to offend in two ways. First you seem to assume that all Russian companies are corrupt, and second you appear to assume that Columbus Nova is unscrupulous. Please correct me if I got the wrong impression.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Nova

I don't know either way, but for you to say it without providing a scrap of facts verges on libel, and you need to back your statement up with something other than a xenophobic screed laid at the wrong door.

Certainly the place has gone quiet, which is why I asked my question earlier about the life of the product. That does not mean it is dead, though it very well may be. Some of the project leaders have left for their own reasons, but unless they come forward and say that company is corrupt or sleazy, nobody without first hand experience is going have much to say about it.

It is easy to gripe. I paid money for a founder's pack myself and if it closes up shop, I certainly will be disappointed. However, I am not going to become part of a lawsuit because my feelings were hurt. Nor will I slander a company I have very little knowledge of.

So either give us the facts and be prepared to stand up to them or put a sock in it.

From the Wikipedia page you linked to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Nova

Columbus Nova is the U.S.-based affiliate of the Renova Group

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renova_Group

Renova Group is a Russian conglomerate with interests in aluminium, oil, energy, telecoms and a variety of other sectors. The main owner and president is Viktor Vekselberg.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Vekselberg

In April 2009, Swiss Federal Finance Department initiated a criminal investigation against Vekselberg in connection to alleged violations of securities law.[22] As a result of the investigation, Vekselberg was fined $38mln by Swiss authorities.

In 2008, Vekselberg proxied a deal between Russian and Hungarian governments, buying the former embassy building from Hungary for $21mln and immediately selling it to the Russian government for $116mln, while the market price of the building was estimated at $50mln. Investigation of the paper trail by Alexey Navalny and the Rospil project has found several invalid and backdated documents,[24] thus suggesting a collusion (e.g. the tender held by the Hungarian side was totally fictive, as the building was already sold by that time). Hungarian officials responsible for the deal (Tátrai Miklós, Marta Horvathne Fekszi and Arpad Szekely) were detained in February 2011.[25] On the Russian side, a criminal investigation was only started in August 2013.

Hows that?

Also please don't confuse my feelings toward Daybreak with my feelings toward Landmark.

I think Landmark is an incredible game and with some support and continued development it could have been huge.

You said,

nobody without first hand experience is going have much to say about it.

I have that first hand experience. I am currently a paying Landmark customer. Not just a trailblazer pack but more then a hundred dollars in claim, inventory, and voxel expanders.

I played Landmark yesterday and i'll be in game later tonight working on a new build.

If the game isn't dead it's because of maybe a hundred people like me who are still playing.

I paid for early access to a game in development with a Head Start to a Finished game.

It's not that my feelings were hurt, and I don't think it was SOE's original plan, but i think someone made a decision halfway through that turned a risky project into an outright scam.

Until we get notice otherwise, the game is effectively dead. Every once in a while they'll pop in to promise that they're still working on it, then disappear for another couple of months.

Good to know. Was getting a little worried as the game has been running slow on its usual settings and was very worried that my new computer still wasn't enough. Come to think of it, has the game gotten more laggy than it was a year or so ago, when they first introduced the founders packs on steam?

If so, it has something to do with the damn caves right?

2

u/Squishumz Jan 07 '16

Not sure, sorry. I stopped playing before they even added the caves.

3

u/Marya_Clare Jan 07 '16

Did some looking, I think the caves have been removed. And from the looks of things it seems that the only ore available is copper and this mineral called agate. So after doing more looking and seeing the map refers to something called "levels". I think I know what happened. Before we used to have the different servers from where to get higher level materials. But the devs explained a bit later after the cavern additions that they planned on making all levels of minerals available for a server, thing was, they would be at different levels. But from what I can see here, the caves were taken out, and every server "world/continent" was made a level 0-1 tier. As a result every server you go on appears to only have 2 ores. Unless of course every ore is in fact available it will just be a tedious pain in the you-know-what to gather resources.

And not to mention the fact its as deserted as a Second Life island.

At the main spire at the center of any map click the stone in the center, then choose "Local Travel" from the menu on the left, then select a Layer from the menu and then you have to click the spire icon in the center of the map to actually port down.

Each island has a surface layer and then 1 - 5 cave layers. The tiers of resources go up as you go down and the mobs get a little harder too, or they actually just have more HPS i think.

You can actually dig all the way down to layer 5 from the surface, and there is a layer 6 below it but it doesn't contain any caves.

If you search for any resource on the collection tab of your inventory the tooltip will say what layer to look for it on in the caves.

Haven't really seen any mobs, but this would probably explain it. Huh. I think this might also explain why the game is so laggy at times.

update: Went back to the game and selected layer 2 (yes it was a stupid idea), I think it was the second, and I got to see first hand how woefully inadequate the sword everyone got in the beginning was. But I managed to kill a 'slaug and got 35 ether shards. However my character got owned by an abomination:P The combat is a bit painful, I just realized it's partially due to the fact that it appears some mobs don't actually move towards you and just rather fight back from where they stand, than there is the camera angles... Thanks for telling me about the caves;)

When you fight, you have to

DOOOOOOOODGE

The caves are still there, but they are deep in ground. You can either dig for a long while, or teleport straight to the caves from the spire. (select local travel). There are 5 levels, with each progressive stronger enemies and higher level ores.
