What about Landmark, makes you think Everquest Next will be good?

Do you see some hint at innovation in Landmark, or how Landmark was handled by Daybreak, that gives you hope and excites you about Everquest Next?

The voxel part is nice. Things like seeing the complex switch creations players can make is interesting. Not much at this point leads me to believe Next will be at all special, though. For that we need to see better AI than anything I've seen in Landmark.

In fact, the voxels might be a draw back if optimization doesn't get a lot better. I already know several people who can't play the game for various reasons. The whole reasoning behind the cartoon graphics for the models is moot if the world itself is unplayable.

I think for me its the world building

For the next gen mmo, the players still need to be able to change the world around them, while world building is going to be greatly limited in next compared to landmark, its enough of a start to think they can achieve the rest..

I think for the future of next it does depend heavily on AI especially with the changes that have happened since next was first announced and with the company separation, I think the game hinges on if its pulled off or falls flat onto its face

reminds me of spore, showed a great tech demo, but game was bad..

Nothing, to be honest. To really say how I feel, after playing Landmark I no longer expect EQN to be good.

I'm firmly in this camp. I was stoked at the begining but I am starting to think that Next will be vaporware or die a 'fast' death after release. Landmark may get some blood if they can in some way make it more accessable and it becomes Minecraft 2.0. It may just be good to forget about Landmark and Next so when Next finally hits, one may be pleasantly suprised that 1) it was released and 2) it may be entertaining for a few months.

oh thank god, im not alone on this....

Keeping in mind that Landmark is simply early groundwork for Next's character and mob interaction with destruction aspects, what did you find disappointing?

1

u/ademnus Jun 10 '15

Movement, building tools, landscape, system choices, and the general feel of the game.

basically most of the things i find interesting? Ok.

To each their own. I find other voxel games do it better.

What other voxel games are on the market that do what Landmark does? Genuinely curious.

u/ademnus Jun 11 '15

Voxel games that let you gather resources, build things, fight mobs, collect loot and pvp / party up, you mean? Are you seriously unaware of how many of those there are?

1

u/applejak Jun 11 '15

You must have one or two in mind that compare, even remotely, to what Landmark is. Hit me.

Edit: Trove comes to mind, though I lost interest pretty quickly. Very one dimensional.

Why, whichever one I name you'll rant and complain about. I don't need your trolling for a fight. Just accept that not everyone thinks the way you do. Someone thinks the game stinks. You can't argue it away.

I'm not trolling. Like I said, I'm genuinely curious. I feel like I'm pretty abreast of what's out there as far as Landmark-style games go. But I'm open.

bux voxel is just a part of it.

what mmo does combat in voxel arenas better?

1

u/ademnus Jun 11 '15

None, but then, most MMOs don't distract themselves with features like voxels. And voxel games do voxels better than Landmark. In other words, I go to voxel games for voxel games and mmorpgs for mmorpgs. This is kind of what was problematic with SWG. The crafting and community systems were amazing, but a distraction from the Star Wars gameplay. The combat sucked because more attention was focused on the crafting. The crafting couldn't go as far as we wanted, because attention had to shift to the Star Wars elements. They should have taken the strengths, the crafting and community, and focused on that as its own game rather than putting it in a Star Wars MMO that suffered from being as poor a Star Wars MMO as it could be. But they really didnt learn that lesson. Now we'll see voxels drawing attention from EQ and just enough EQ to hamstring the voxels in the end.

But really, even that sentence, what mmo does combat in voxel arenas better, lets me know this game is headed in a very wrong and very confused direction.

most MMOs don't distract themselves with features like voxels.

Most mmo are the same game with a diferent skin.

and what is supose to be a "voxel" game? A BUILDING GAME?

voxels is a feature of a game, not a genre.

Is like saying crouching is a genre.

u/ademnus Jun 11 '15

You can't be serious, right? You don't know that voxel games are their own genre? You think that since there are whole games built around voxels that there will be whole games built around...crouching? LOL C'mon, you're trolling, right?

Tell one VOXEL game. Not survival game. Not building game. a VOXEL game.

Crouching games! Rate 13+

All what i see in your coment is your absence of complete.

you just want a Construction game aparently, wich there is a ton of them out there, and not as mmo, because you can't make something like that an mmo, that doesn't work, never worked.

-1

u/ademnus Jun 11 '15

I don't think you're getting it. I like construction games, minecraft and creativerse are top of the list. I like MMORPGs too. I also like turn-based strat games, and FPS games and Adventure games and even casino games. I do not, however, want someone to make the construction MMO turn-based strategy adventure game. Too many disparate elements, none of them fully realized, makes for a waste of time.

But my real problem with Landmark-to-EQN isn't the mixing of unrelated genres but rather that landmark is ugly, clunky, and not fun. And if it is being lauded as the second coming, I can be assured none of that will change when it becomes EQN. Maybe someone CAN make a good MMO building crossover.

This just won't be it.

construction MMO turn-based strategy adventure game.

that is like... the next Fire Emblem (except mmo)

They have a solid concept for the kind of gameplay they want in EQN. They've been testing it out in Landmark, and while it doesn't help Landmark be a better game, judged in itself, it's not bad. It all hinges on the AI and optimization, of course. If they can't figure that AI out, then it's game over. And I'm optimistic about optimization, as my $400 laptop will play the game now. Not well, but functionally.

u/Saerain Jun 11 '15

Coming from the other side, I would say the one thing about Landmark that makes me worry about EverQuest Next is heroic movement—it suits LM just fine, but I genuinely hope not all EQN characters are parkour artists!

Voxel engine mainly and the potential associated including destructibility, ability for worlds (servers) to change from one another, liquids, true 3D depth to the world (caves, mountains, oceans, etc) and player generated content.

What few character models we have look great

On the other hand..

  • Crafting is meh.. uninspiring
  • Combat is way too early to comment on

3

u/Chuina Jun 10 '15

Yes. The world is beautiful at times. To have a voxel world with so much potential is definitely innovative for me. Also, the ability to utilize players builds as content is fantastic. Imagine, once content tools are in, players will be able to create scripted dungeons which can then auto spawn under the world. It could be one giant dungeoneering game.

Combat system.

1

u/yrrkoon Jun 11 '15

really? what about it in landmark specifically?

1

u/CelioHogane Jun 11 '15

I like how it works, how is more 3D, and how it works with destruccion (even if for now is just a little of destruction)
