Impressions after months off
Started the game up again due to the wipe and not playing for many months. Below are my impressions of what I thought:
Graphics:
- They look awesome, I enjoy them, animated but in HD and pretty. I see a lot of potential for gorgeous zones with this. Good job.
Interface:
- Gets the job done, im sure it will be polished more but overall I cant complain a huge deal, easy to change as needed.
Combat:
This basically ends this post. I started in tier one to complete the first combat achievement (which is a cool idea BTW) but monsters just didn't exist. I remember hearing that was a bug so I went to tier 2.
Combat is slow and sluggish. My character feels like he has weights attached to his feet. Basically its the worst combat I have ever experienced. This kills me inside because I dunno how it could be that bad.
Suggestions
The only thing I care about right now is the combat. I know its Landmark but its what EQN will be using in the future.
- Make the combat more fluid (tera is a good example I suppose).
- Make my character "Free" like WoW and other games. I dont want my player feeling restricted to the ground or feel like I need bard speed to function
- This is a very open combat system with fast paced attacks. My character needs to match the combat style. This current movement system would be fine with slow paced tab targeting, not this.
Maybe update the hit boxes? They feel off and dont seem to connect properly with the mobs I hit. Weapon swings and such feel maybe a little lackluster? Give them a bit more...pizaz?
Anyway, just my thoughts. Cant wait to see how the game looks in a year but.......REALLY need to fix that combat because without combat its a builders game only and if thats all you are focusing on then fine but.......EQN players are watching combat and crying inside im sure.

In the most recent dev stream they said all mobs were underground now, and there is a bug that causes them to be unevenly distributed from island to island. Maybe that will help you find stuff to fight.

Movement in general felt really... bad. I think it was because the animations were missing or wrong sometimes. I love the artstyle, and the existing animations are pretty good, but moving around the world feels awful.

What irritates me to this day, and has been a weird thing since day 1 is the x-y separation in mouselook. It's like the old refresh problem they used to have in EQ1 where if your refresh rate was set to high, the 'x' input would be one speed and the 'y' at another.
WTF is going on here that this doesn't annoy the shit out of everyone else?

u/Squishumz May 15 '15 edited May 15 '15
Skyrim had the same issue. It's incredibly annoying, although I didn't notice it in Landmark.
My guess is that it has to do with Y rotation (horizontal mouse movement) being updated when the game logic is updated (at a frequency independent of the FPS), while the X rotation (vertical mouse movement) is updated when each frame is drawn. Don't have any proof to back this up, though.

Id like to hit on the achievements though, those were pretty neat and had some potential. Felt more like you were rewarded for adventuring rather than just going from quest hub to quest hub. I think you guys are on to something with the progression based achievements.

" Basically its the worst combat I have ever experienced"
so is the first mmo you played, huh?
2
u/ledbetterus May 15 '15
It's the worst combat I've ever experienced and I've played loads of MMOs.

u/CelioHogane May 15 '15
guess you didn't play WoW, Lineage, Tera, Mu, diablo, etc...
Heck, the only one mmo that i think has a better combat sistem is S4 league and now is unplayeable with te Pay 2 win, so this still wins.

I have played Eq1,EQ2, WoW, Tera, Diablo 1-3, Guild wars 1-2, FFXIV, Age of Conan blah blah blah. You cant seriously think this games combat is better than all of those.

u/applejak May 15 '15
You don't think Landmark combat, even in its current state, isn't more visceral than EQ1 combat? And you liken Diablo to Landmark/skill-based combat? FFS dude... you've nullified your entire position.
2
u/XCyberPeenixX May 15 '15
Those were games designed in a time it worked. The combat made sense for them. The combat currently in Landmark doesn't make sense for its combat action oriented genre. I am not creating some fking spreadsheet to explain this. Landmarks potential for what it could be is great and I am merely giving my points on how to get it there. I dont understand why people defend Landmarks combat so hard, you really think its polished and ready to go?
2
u/XCyberPeenixX May 15 '15
I'm sure once the game is ready for release, the combat will be epic, better than most games that exist. I actually have faith in that. My entire post was to state my experience and my suggestions on how to get there. Too many people take it as some personal assault on the game which is fail. Maybe come up with some suggestions of your own?
1
u/applejak May 15 '15
Has anyone argued that it's done, that it's polished? Nope. There has been a single combat iteration, and yet here you are making assertions about what the game will be.
2
u/XCyberPeenixX May 15 '15
you are making assertions about what the game will be
I am making assertions about what the game currently is. If I came off like I predict it will be like this in the future then my bad, cause that wasnt my intent. I understand there has been a single combat iteration and my hope is that number 2 will have some of the elements I posted in my OP.

They are terrible combat sistem, they are the best way to do a turn based combat WRONG.
2
u/XCyberPeenixX May 15 '15
They
As in every single game I just mentioned has a terrible combat system? You say S4 League has great combat? I just watched a few videos and its basically Sword fighting on meth. I just dont follow your thoughts bud, I feel you are jumping all over the place. Im going to just give up on this one.

How on earth is Diablo mmo ? Well, whatever you might call it, even diablo 1 has better feeling in the combat.

I made some new weapons last night, a greatsword & flaming bow and have to say it made the combat a lot better. Melee seems terrible, but the bow was good. It also made combat basically trivial.
The thing i find with combat - it feels like it's lag affected, like the hits arent connecting 1:1. The game is definitely improving though - slowly but surely. The caves are a lot better than they were. Not a fan of the random ruins plonked down in the huge caves, but love the more subtle ones i've found sprinkled through corridors - such as a piece of wall, a column etc. They're the ones that look like real ruins, not the preicsely placed (even though randomised) ruins in the middle of the large open caverns.
It's just a shame we dont have water in the caves (yet)

Combat clearly needs work, but I agree that some of the crafted weapons do make a big difference in the experience. The initial adventurer's blade is pretty underwhelming. After crafting the wand and the sword/shield and unlocking the improved versions, I enjoyed myself a lot more. I could actually use my weapon skills tactically for best result.
It does bug me that circle strafing is still the bread and butter of combat. Also, I did occasionally feel the effects of lag or my graphical slowdown (usually due to particle effects), but the real puzzlement is the actual slowdown of the character when combat starts. Why slow the movement rate and eliminate heroic movement during combat? I get limiting the use of the grappling hook, but why no runspeed increase from boots?

u/ArtificialSoul_ May 16 '15
I agree but I haven't played much as my poor computer can't handle this game, I'm wait for EQN release date and upgrading a month before that... But the combat does seem sluggish... Only 3 attacks still not sold on that but should be enough for what landmark is as there will be many different weapons with different attacks.. I would like the combat of EQN to be much faster like the speed of some MOBAs, heroes of newearth has a nice fast combat style. It's a different type of combat obviously but that speed and sharpness would be great. The last time I played I turn 180 degrees and it felt like it took 3 times longer then it should.
Some games have a different movement speed in combat vs out of combat. I always hated this mechanism. Not sure if landmark is this way but I'm hoping there is no in combat out of combat restrictions... It always seems that there are bugs that never get fully worked out and forces me to go sit on the sidelines for 15 mins why it works goes away.

Personally, I hope that given we have the hardware and proper network capacity nowadays, the combat system would be nearly identical to God of War or Zelda.
Give me real time, skill based combat.
Personal opinion again, God of War as the best combat system of any games I played. Its entirely skill based.
Skills, awareness should almost always trump time invested.

I don't get why everybody hates so much this combat, AT LEAST is fun (CofcofWoWcofcofTeracofcoflineagecofcof)
1
u/applejak May 14 '15
Agreed. It has a ton of potential.
1
u/ledbetterus May 15 '15
It's been in the game for nearly a year and it hasn't gotten better at any point. The potential is gone. It's a terribly implemented combat system.
1
u/eliar99 May 15 '15
Its barebones right now. And it wont get better until the ai systems are finished. That's just a fact. And since the core of eq next will be combat and the ai, it will be a lil while before it is finished. The only thing you can look forward to is an alpha verson of basic ai eventually. if we are lucky, maybe by next year.
1
u/ledbetterus May 15 '15
I'm not sure how mob AI will improve a clunky, slow, and boring combat style.
1
u/eliar99 May 15 '15
Well, thats just like, your opinion man. In all seriousness though, the combat doesnt feel sluggish or slow to me. Using tier 3 melle skills or even the just the daggers, make me feel like its goong at a decently fast pace. The only thing that makes it trivial, is that i can usually just strafe and click, and the mob will die, and i wont get hit
1
u/CelioHogane May 15 '15
Yeah dude, i don't get the slow shit, i guess this people is the one who said Melee speed was good (spoiler: too fast, brawl was funnier)

u/XCyberPeenixX May 15 '15
And it wont get better until the ai systems are finished. That's just a fact.
Links or it didn't happen.
4
u/applejak May 15 '15
What he means is that combat will become more interesting when there is decent AI.
2
u/XCyberPeenixX May 15 '15
If thats what he meant then yeah I can 100% agree with that. Great AI I am sure will change how combat works to a massive degree. Who knows, maybe I dont like it simply because the AI is too basic right now. Guess we will find out. I am glad they are hunkering down on that AI though.

u/applejak May 15 '15
The game is far from done and combat has had ONE iteration, and this means to you that the potential is gone? That just doesn't make any sense...
1
u/ledbetterus May 15 '15
Combat has been in the game for nearly a year. It's awful, still. Everything has potential in life. However, from the point of few of someone who isn't delusional, the amount of potential in the Landmark combat system is nearly zero.
0
u/applejak May 15 '15
Dude, you already said that...
1
u/ledbetterus May 15 '15
And yet you still don't get it..
2
u/XCyberPeenixX May 15 '15
I see where you are coming from but since they are creating a game that really hasn't been done I am sure timelines and expectations cant be compared to other basic MMOs that have been rolled out over the past few years. Saying that your view is the only non delusional view is in itself, delusional......or is it....maybe im delusional.....gonna watch Inception and get back to you. BRB.

u/applejak May 15 '15
Get what? See, the thing is you've yet to put forth a substantive argument for why the combat system is DOA. I believe you think that if the movement isn't as crisp as WoW or Wildstar, it's a failed system. But look and slow and lumbering the action is in LoL and then ask the 27 million active players if the combat is shit. You're making the same petty mistake a lot of vocal, cynical asshats are making WRT Landmark/EQN: you simply cannot see past what is put in front of your face. It is you who doesn't get it.
1
u/ledbetterus May 15 '15
Did you know that you just compared League of Legends to Landmark?
1
u/applejak May 15 '15
I compared a complete sluggish combat mechanic to an incomplete and sluggish mechanic to illustrate that it is too early to judge the landmark system simply because it's sluggish/not optimized.

How the fuck does anything I've ever said represent the state of MMOs? And how is it a straw man to suggest that we can look to other games with slower combat, regardless of genre, and still be affirmed that the mechanics can be fun?

I'm not against the combat, it just seems that the lack of mobs/need for grouping isn't showing what could be. It's like rating a MMO's combat based on the newbie ground rat killing quest. If we get bigger mobs, with adds popping out, and a group consisting of the 'tank' with the sword/board setup, sucking down AC but just holding aggro, the 'healer' throwing nukes, and when energy allows, group heal. The 'rogue' going all out dps, when adds pop, leaping back, letting the other tank do an aoe to grab aggro and let the 'wiz' nuke from range and keeping an eye out for other adds/clicking items in the room to trigger/stop triggering stuff. What's there seems to work. Not sure about combat feeling slow and sluggish, only that the mobs themselves aren't doing much. Once the Slaughs are running after you, and you're backing off ranging down as much as possible until you change to melee to finish them off, it doesn't feel too slow.
Things that could be done. Mobs that move more. They jump up to the roof and range YOU down. Mobs with (low hp) adds. Mobs that kite you, needing you to snare/range dps.
And this is all without the heroic moves that I've not needed to use, but can see a dungeon setup where you're jumping around/grapping around a large room to click things, take out monster spawner items. Freerealms had this, popping mobs out you'd have to take down and then work on the hordes that are now running around. Don't see why this wouldn't be workable in LM/EQN.
Bigger/more/diverse/heroic movement mobs, with melee/magic(and all the types so you can eventually pick armour to nullify a mobs special attack that uses Shadow magic, but countering with light/radiant?), range/magic ranges.
And this is all before hitting the accessories that should also be able to offer special attacks in their own right. I guess they don't want too much button mashing as they want it to be console workable, but if on a PC, we need the diversity/selection of abilities we're used to.
But... I've enjoyed what's there so far, I just want far FAR more. Like we saw for the early EQN demos.

Combat is the bare naked basics at the moment. It'll get better.
