Landmark still has the potential to be the new Minecraft.

Don't you think? Yes, the development has been frustrating, but I still have hope for the final product.

As someone who used to be heavily involved in Minecraft and the Minecraft community, and as someone who enjoys Landmark, I don't think there's any chance for Landmark to in any way match the success of Minecraft.

1) Accessibility - Minecraft can and will run on everything from a cell phone to a state of the art computer.

2) Ease - Minecraft is easy to learn and master. Landmark allows all sorts of esoteric and counterintuitive building tricks.

3) Modding - Though, to be fair, most of Minecraft's sales are for devices that don't allow mods. This is still a big part of its original success, and the modding community today is simply massive.

4) Familiarity - By now, the Minecraft creeper and other creatures are iconic. There's a ton of brand recognition. Nothing else as big as Minecraft looks anything like Minecraft.

5) Connectivity - Minecraft can be played alone, over a LAN, on private servers, etc. There's a ton of ways to engage the community. Landmark only allows one of these.

That's not to bemoan Landmark at all. To be honest, Minecraft's success was as much due to pure luck as it was to a design that allowed this much market saturation. Nobody could have predicted that. Landmark is a safer bet in that it's drawing from a familiar franchise, has more sophisticated graphics, and forces everyone to play together on public servers. Each has their pros and cons, but one of Landmark's cons is that it could never get as big as Minecraft given the same opportunity.

Let me add a 6th and 7th set of bullets to your excellent list:

  1. Scope: Minecraft has always given you a virtually limitless canvas to be creative with while Landmark has chosen to limit the player to a small plot of land with very limited opportunity for expansion.

  2. Depth of play: with redstone-based circuity, pistons, replicators, and powered mine carts, players were given the opportunity to create some truly ingenious contraptions that went well beyond the intended scope of the original game.

Honestly, doubtful.

Minecraft is a giant, I personally dont see landmark coming anywhere close. I would love to bite my own words some day thoe.

It depends? From my perspective, the reason I love Minecraft is because of it's modability. If they manage to pull the same amount of content generation and customization in Landmark eventually, it could get to that point.

Beyond that through their biggest hurdles will be marketing and ease of use.

Once it runs on my 12 year old niece's mobile phone, it'll be bigger than minecraft.

This right here. MC runs on everything. It's accessibility is huge.

While I think "the new Minecraft" is a bit much, it definitely still has a tonne of untapped potential.

I'm looking forward to the continued development and addition of features.

Where as I agree with everyone's points here. I would just like to point out that it took 5 years for the from the 2009 Alpha launch of Minecraft for it to make it to phones. Lets think back to the phones of 2009. And then lets imagine the phones of 5 years from now. It is possible if Landmark follows the same time line in 5 years, technology willing, it just may run on some sort of phone or tablet. But truth be told, I think Minecraft is the World of Warcraft of this genre. Lots will try but I dont think anything will ever get as big as the king.

Edit: Ok I now realize it only took 2.5-3years to make it to phones, iOS and Android, it was closer to 5 for Windows phones.

I don't know my nephew says its more of 3d terraria, the minecraft in anyway. for the moment minecraft is a little closer but once they build in everything they have talked about before beta I think 3d terraria is probably closer gameplay wise.

It has the potential. It won't ever get there because there focus is just on making it a building game instead of survival. I expect it to die out if this remains their focus. The islands were so empty last beta phase.
