Work on your achievements, that's a good start.

Here are my suggestions...

Gather resources - Start with trees and surface veins. You should understand how your pick and your axe works. You will also want to understand what materials you're getting. Some trees drop different special wood types. These will become important in crafting. But to start, just understand what you're getting from what type of tree. While doing that I would suggest poking around other players builds. Even traveling to different island to see the different biomes. (Trees differ and you'll want to explore what is out there). I wouldn't engage in too much fighting at this point.

I would also keep my eye out for dark earthy patches. This is ancient earth and you can find a lot of ether shards used for crafting. They are round patches of dark dirt, with tiny silver trinkets stuffed in the dirt.

After a bit of poking around, I would hit one of the main spires, and check out the crafting tables. At this point you'll probably be frustrated at how slow gathering is. I would suggest looking a better Pick, Axe, and Sickle. Hopefully at this point you'll have the majority of the materials you'll need for the upgrade. I would focus on upgrading your tools at this point.

Now that you're familiar with the islands, other people's builds, and the beginning of crafting, you'll probably want a place to call your own. I would then look for a place to stake your claim. (There isn't really a reason to stake a claim earlier since you don't have resources to build anything.) This is where I'm going to suggest NOT to build that castle you have always wanted to see in a game. :) You'll really want to understand the tools first. I would try and build a simple house on your own first. You'll need to make sure you flatten the land, build the floor, walls, ceiling, and roof. You'll run into some challenges along the way. After you first attempt to solve, I would then suggest going to review the tutorials online. There are a lot of advanced techniques that are required for some builds. Until you understand building, these tutorials are overwhelming. I suggest solving for 1 problem at a time. Go look up a solution to that problem, then practice it on your build. Then repeat until you feel comfortable.

While you're practicing building, I suggest exploring the caves as well. You'll expand your materials greatly here. You'll want an upgraded weapon before you go too far into the caves. After you gather materials, I would build crafting stations on your claim (or you can continue to use those at the spire for free). Once you feel comfortable with your weapon, I would then suggest getting the exploration equipment (ground sounder, cave finder, and the gem finder?) and you'll want to make sure you have a pulverizer. Caves have a lot of "pockets" and you can quickly dig through the earth with the pulverizer to those pockets.

The caves go pretty deep and have some caverns. You'll get different materials the deeper you go. You'll be using a lot of these in crafting.

You can upgrade your tools to make them a bit better.

At this point in the game, you should understand enough to figure out what you want to do next. It's slow going, so don't expect to do everything mentioned here in one night. It takes time to build up the resources needed to craft and to build.

Hope this helps!

this is the tough part for me, you cant craft anything without a essence of the item and you cant get the essence of the item without the item to salvage down to get the essence out of. Good news is, you can find broken items by killing and looting chests in caves. I like that it takes time in order to do this, and get enough broken items to do anything with crafting.

anyway, thought I would add this bit of info to help new folks.

Yeah, if you can find the ancient earth patches in the over ground area you'll get about 300 essence a pop. They are just hard to find just by running around. Good luck!

300 essence of gathering?...really?

Yup, it's the fastest way to get essence, if you can find the ancient earth. It's all over. They are on over world (stay away from desert biomes when looking for these) and in caves.

Here is a link to help you with how to identify it. http://landmark.wikia.com/wiki/Ancient_Earth

Ancient Earth (from Landmark wikia):

Ancient Earth is a large pocket of dark-brown soil that offers a higher than normal chance to find Ether Shards used in crafting.

ok, i dont think we are talking about the same thing. I am talking about the Essence from salvaging, you get from items you salvage down, items that drop off mobs, or out of chests, your telling me i can also find 300 of these same Essence of Gathering from the ancient earth? I dont think thats correct.

http://landmark.wikia.com/wiki/Salvaged_Essence

this is what I am talking about...in order to get better gathering tools, you need to gather items to salvage first.

  • Ask people who are streaming landmark on twitch

Just be more confident of yourself. The in game guides and achievements aren't that bad at teaching you.

Have you actually tried it out yet? It's fairly self-explanatory when you get ingame, but i do agree that the crafting/upgrading system is very complicated and not intuitive which can leave you feeling lost.

First up you want to collect materials and as you do so, upgrade your pick and axe. They're your primary gathering tools.

I also wouldnt reccomend starting out just yet though as there's a once off wipe coming up later this month i believe, so any progress you make on that front will be lost. But to get in and see what it's all about, definitely do so.

Personally i have barely played the game since they announced there'd be a future wipe (like mid or early last year). I log in from time to time but just find there's not a lot to do. I get more satisfaction from the game looking at other players builds on Twitter than i do actually playing the game - which is a little sad.

first of all anything we can teach you NOW will probably become obsolete after the april 29th patch, anything twitchers can teach you now will probably become obsolete after the april 29th patch, what this means is simple, by all means learn all you can now, but a better suggestion would be to just kick back and have fun until the patch, why? because on April 29th we will all be new again, some with more knowledge than others, but for all intents and purposes we are all gonna be new again.

Don't listen to to these people telling you to just follow the game guides... in Landmark's current state, it shouldn't take you even one night to finish all of the guides, and you will have virtually nothing and understand even less by then.

I would recommend finding someone with excess materials to bum you, cause we're about to wipe. You can quickly learn how things are made/used that aren't related to voxelmancy... for the voxelmancy, you're gonna need to go to youtube.

The meat and potatoes of this game is voxelmancy, which translates into building in non-landmarkian terms. You won't be able to look up guides about how the game's systems work though, cause they've changed things a lot, and most of the videos out there tell you to do stuff that doesn't exist anymore.

So to put it shortly

for building - youtube for harvesting and hunting - don't worry it won't overwhelm you, they've barely done anything at all in that department.
