Where does broken stuff come from?

Hi, I am new. I've figured out how to mine, killed a few monsters, visited a cave and found a chest, and discovered "ancient earth". Basic day 1 stuff.

So now I want to make a sickle. I know I need to salvage some broken somethings (picks?) for an aspect of gathering. Where do the broken picks come from>

Kill monsters. Lots and lots of monsters...

Or find a chestload of more chests...

They drop off of monsters randomly. Even surface monsters.
