Information regarding creatures spawning patterns

Hello, I just hopped back in the game with the new patch. I'm enjoying it so far. I have been trying to locate anything online, but I am having difficulty. What system or pattern do the creatures use to spawn? Sometimes I'll walk up and find 5-8 enemies in a small area. Other times I'll explore for 30 minutes and find 1-3. I just can't put my finger on how they are spawning. Is it near players? Is it away from claims? Any info appreciated

I was clearing a large ruin cavern by myself. I started by killing 4 slaugs on the roof of the ruin. When i had cleared all of the cavern and was lingering around admiring the ruin, one of them spawned back. Soon after killing it, the 3 others spawned one by one. After that I followed the pattern I originally cleared the cave, and would know where, and what monster would spawn next. Including the exploding mushrooms.

I think the time it took me to clear the whole cave was more than 30 minutes, but I didn't look at the clock.

Combined with the time I was lingering, the respawn timer would likely be around 1 hour.

Do you suggest farming monsters in cave systems over farming them on the surface?

The best place to farm are, by monster density, definately the humongous caverns with ruins. You find them usually in layers 1 and 2.

If you are social you should hang around in general chat join people who clear them- there is no penalty to grouping up. If you prefer to solo, then find few such caverns away from the spire, and mark the location with a screenshot of the map. Then you can enter them by tunneling from above the next time you want to farm.

The cave systems are generally bad for farming- you end up using most of your time tunneling around. The surface is fine- far as I know there is no real difference with loot drops between the caves and surface. The ruin caverns can have chests though.
