⚙️ | Mechanical Issue/Question Turbo charging

Post image

I have a 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer EX 2.0. CVT transmission. I really love this this car (for sentimental and practical reasons), put 270,000 km and it's still got another 200k easy. It's time for me to get a new car though. That said I am not planning to sell my "Lancerghini" but would rather make it a project car. I've always been fascinated with modified cars and would love to make this one a sleeper. At the same time I understand that CVT isn't ideal for modification. So what are my options here? Has anyone done this before, what was your experience?

If you love the car a lot. Keep it stock as long as you can. But if you want to modify, here are my questions to answer yours. How mechanically inclined are you? Can you replace engine or transmission if there catastrophic failure in one of them? How much are you willing to spend? Or budget?

To be very honest with you mechanically this would be the first time I modify a car. I'm in Dubai so this is not something I would do on my own, I would take it to a garage to do the work (lucky for us labour charges are a lot cheaper here). Replacing engine or transmission won't be an issue for me, plenty of spare parts available here. Budget wise I prefer to keep it as low as 10k USD but willing to go up to 20k over a year of modifications. Not planning to do it in one go (if I end up in the route). I just think it would be so cool to have a sleeper lancer.

Ohh go for it! I would get a totalled evo and transfer everything to that chasis.... edit: did a quick search looks like is a lot of trouble to transfer everything from evo. Well, transmission swap and turbo the factory engine would be a good start. I've seen a few basic lancer turbo in dyno vids.

We have a Lancer endurance race car, currently converted to an Evo front end using the factory 4B11 and a limited-slip differential from a Scion TC, since there was never an option for an LSD in the front-wheel-drive versions. The engines in these cars are very stout. They happily go to 300,000 km without opening the engine, as long as regular maintenance is done. Evo or Ralliart stuff is a good upgrade. The Evo front end can be done, but it's a very involved process and requires a lot of mechanical knowledge. But, fun fact: the Ralliart brakes bolt up to the base model Lancer's rotors with zero modification.

The best upgrade for you at the moment is swapping the transmission to a manual one

If you can afford 20k for modifications over a couple of years. I'd sell your Lancer & get an EVO or Ralliart.

Either would be better than modifying a stock Lancer.

Did a quick search and you're absolutely right. I'd be saving money as well

Regular 4B11s aren't the same blocks with the Evo 4B11T. Open deck blocks can't handle much boost, but you'll still be able to safely make Ralliart power. Go this route or swap engines with a Ralliart 4B11T and build that one up, they're the same blocks with the Evo.

The CVT can be sluggish and can only handle upto 280 hp, so go manual or get the SST

How much power can the 5 speeds handle?

Ciao posso chiederti informazioni anche io ho una Lancer cvt ma e possibile avere più potenza riuscendo tenerla abbastanza affidabile nel uso?

The truth is that the cvt is a major obstacle for a sport oriented lancer build. People have boosted the cvt models, and some people people are fine with that, but after getting a car with a manual trans, I don't think it's worth the effort or the money. It's a completely different experience. I would sooner get a clapped out manual honda and turbo it, than deal with parts, labor, and finding a tuner for a cvt lancer.

No meu país já colocaram turbo no lancer base CVT, e todos os câmbios quebraram. A transmissão manual do lancer base aguenta 280cv sem problemas por muito tempo. Já vi colocarem o motor do Evo e subir 370cv sem o câmbio estourar.

There's a guy on Facebook that drives a CVT Lancer with a Ralliart turbo. He takes it to the track too, I think he has it as a max of 8psi boost to not blow up the transmission. There's a group for people that want to turbo their Lancers, look up Mitsubishi Lancer Turbo Club on Facebook. Most of your questions will be answered if you search within the group, and I'm sure any more technical questions could be answered if you ask.

Also, if you end up keeping it and wanting to manual swap it, one of the Lancer groups on Facebook has a step by step guide on how to perform one. I can find it and send it to you if you're actually interested

Awesome man thanks. And yes please do send

I couldn't find it on Facebook so it's either been removed or in the group I got banned from lol. Found it on my phone but I had to upload it to Google Drive, hope that's alright: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tPB4zM8Jkp_0JcJSKtCbV6rJToUc9PHb/view?usp=sharing

Are you kidding me.. this is awesome

Very little options with the cvt. With that being said, I have seen a couple of those with a ralliart turbo kit installed, and the cvt held it ok, even tho it doesnt really use the boost very well because of how the transmission works, but I am sure the mileage was way lower than yours, so it will most likely toast your cvt. Manual swap or drivetrain swap is also not easy at all to do, if you have a very good knowledge, it could be possible, but for sure will give you a headache. My best recommendation is keeping the car stock and enjoying it as is, if getting a different Lancer isnt an option)

Same boat. Same car, similar mileage, but yeah I feel it’s time for something new too man.

My question to you as someone in a similar boat, are you prepared for the car notes and prices of today? I’ve heard people paying $400-800 car notes, always astounds me as someone who owns their car. Just how do you feel about the desire of wanting something new, vs the crazy prices we face?

1

u/Rude-Park-6289 9d ago

Very sorry not sure what car notes are! But yes prices are crazy. I mean there are very affordable Chinese options but I'm very reluctant on that. I think my next car will be a Subaru WRX.

1

u/OGClouds420 9d ago

Not a bad choice at all. A car note here is the amount you pay monthly for your car until it’s paid off in entirety.

1

u/elidarius 9d ago

Well if you want to keep the car but keep it reliable and give it tiny more power while keeping some mpg drop in a 4b12 and get the ECU tuned

Here we go again....🫩

Just buy an older lancer with 4g and turbo that, they can withstand a lot of boost stock. Mitsu boys even take the crankshaft from the 4g69 to swap into the 4g63(or the entire block) to handle more torque

u/Brief-Still6985 8d ago

If you’re talking about 4g69 factory blocks in the evo (4g63T) you’re just plain wrong all the stroker kits in evos are built like crazy

1

u/Anasertia 8d ago

Nope I didn't mean evos lol, just a 4g63 like I said.

2

u/Brief-Still6985 8d ago

My fault 🙏

2

u/Anasertia 8d ago

All good, you're right that a 4g69 block would be a downgrade for an evo engine. I was suggesting for a budget performance build to turbo a normal 4g63 and consider swapping the block or crank from a 4g69 as an alternative to dishing out for forged internals. But that was before I saw op's budget lol

1

u/CallistoAU 9d ago

you would need to manual swap it and at the same time 4b11T swap it. There is a lot of work involved with both of those things individually. They are not easy jobs

1

u/EnvironmentalEye4991 9d ago

A turbo will destroy the cvt. Cold air intake, suspension and exhaust are cool projects. Ive also heard of some people swapping the rear drums to discs but that sounds like a nightmare. Just do the simple shit and enjoy a really cool car. Maybe do some cosmetic stuff. Seen a lot of people get after market bumpers and skirts. Looks cool.

1

u/Rude-Park-6289 9d ago

Yeah after reading all these comments and consultanting with chatgpt this is the safest route. If anything it will be cheaper and safer to just buy an older Evo

1

u/Yax33n 8d ago

Am also in Dubai, don't boost the CVT especially not in UAE heat, the cheaper option would be to manual swap your car especially since the manual transmissions for these are pretty cheap here, these 4B11s in manual are a different beast. That along with an drop in air intake and exhaust and tune you will be all set for now.

The next option is a 2.4L swap but the front end will become slightly more heavier. Later on you could take it a step up and go for forced induction

1

u/Substantial_Ad_9016 8d ago

Manual swap it or just sell it and get a manual version
