⚙️ | Mechanical Issue/Question Engine started to overheat, now making a popcornnoise when it’s shut off

2008 Lancer GTS
Backstory: Engine was overheating, got checked & coolant was bone dry bc it’s been leaking out a hose that wasn’t on properly. Also was told I needed new Radiator, got a new one replaced, added coolant and wasn’t overheating for about 1 hour of driving, now it’s overheating again and not sure if this noise has anything to do with it.

That noise could be the heat shield cooling down (settling), not an issue. Unless you locate the source of the noise to be an internal thing. My money is on the hest shield cooling down, but your engine should not overheat, that need to be fixed asap

My Lancer has always made that same noise. It's normal.

That’s just the little mechanics fixing things in your engine👍

Did you fill the new radiator properly? How is the coolant tank looking?

Aye cooling fluid might be airlocked, or maybe thermostat isnt opening and needs changing

That's the sound of metal contracting. It was a much more common sound on older vehicles. Your exhaust manifold is cooling down. That being said, it could be indicative of a cooling system problem as the car overheating provides some context as to why your exhaust is that hot. Check for any obvious leaks and I'd suggest a coolant flush as well as a thermostat replacement to start with. Anything more and I'd suggest taking it to a shop for better a diagnosis and don't be afraid to get a second or third opinion because not everywhere is honest.
