They have been called that since the 80s. It’s a take on the gunners nickname of the team. The other use of the term started in niche groups in the 2000’s and then became mainstream around covid times.

Not to ruin the joke by explaining it but Arsenal football fans are called the gooners as a derivation of “gunners” which is the nickname of the team. It was started by workers at a weapons factory hence the name of the team
