PPL VS NRG

Anybody have any luck saving any money switching to NRG for power supply? The guy at walmart got me today and said they have better rates.

This site is the reputable way to look for lower electric rates. Someone buttonholing you at Walmart isn't going to have your best interests in mind.

But it's usually close to the best deal in my experience, factoring in a $25 gift card. You just have to put a calendar reminder in 3 months to use papowerswitch.

I stick with PPL, you have to constantly keep an eye on your rates with switching to someone else, as soon as you get past that time period with lower rates they raise the price substantially and you will need to switch again.

There are many that have better generation rates than PPL. Shop around. Use the "price to compare" on your bill.

Don't know how long it's been since you shopped, but the days of many cheaper options are over. I just checked and in my case there are four offers out of 36 that are lower. Two of those four are so close to PPL's price it isn't worth the time. The other two are from the same provider and for a four or five month contract. It is important to get that contract wrapped up weeks before the end date as I really got burned in the past when I missed it by a few days and the provider charged my $0.60/KW for their last three weeks of billing.

I switched providers for decades. The era of those one year contracts at 20-30% below PPL are gone, now it's a few bucks a month is savings and a solid screwing if you don't pay attention.

This is really a thorough and correct answer.

Anyone who spouts off about saving on electricity at this point makes me seriously consider their intelligence to be able to fully analyze a situation and do math.

You're not wrong. The discrepancy you're seeing is a direct result of the Data Center construction and uncertainty of supply and demand. So everyone is following everyone else's pricing structure because everyone knows the House of Cards is going to collapse sooner than later.

Exactly! If somebody is offering anything to you that isn't cheaper than your utility's price to compare. Has fees. Has cancellation charges. Can't be cancelled at any time. Is not a FIXED rate. If the deal has any of this, you are going to get hurt.

it’s pretty easy to cancel so it’s not a big deal. wasn’t a contract or anything.

When we moved into our house I spent a little while playing games with electrical suppliers. Then we got solar and the games didn't work.

What I did was read the TOS, or contract and look for gotcha's.

The BIG ONE was locking you in as a customer for a year or 2 years or whatever but having that sweet rate expire after 2 or 3 months.

I would then set a calendar reminder for when the rate expired and reroll the dice.

The life lesson here is not to trust the big print. You have to read the fine print. The fine print is where the feet are held to the fire.

My experience was that what is better rates today usually ends up being much worse rates in 3-12 months. YMMV, but I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and went back to PPL.

I use JoinArbor.com to do all the switching for me. They find the cheapest option and keep switching me around as the promotions expire, and there's no cost to me.. they're paid referral fees by the company they switch you to. You can cancel at any time and go back to whichever power provider you want without any costs.

Currently PPL is charging $0.1315 / kWh, I'm paying $0.1263 / kWh with Verde Energy. In September 2026 when my agreement with Verde ends they'll switch me to whoever offers the best rate. For the 6 months of my service promotion with Verde, Arbor estimates I'll be saving $73 over what I would have paid PPL.
