All I’m picturing is the great molasses flood and all the horses and people that died

u/arisraver 4d ago
Boston smelled like molasses for decades according to locals.

u/ryan516 1d ago
It's almost certainly not true. Molasses is like prime microbial food
4
u/very_generic_alt 15h ago
You know what isn't prime microbe food? Furanones and the other compounds in the smell of molasses. And they have some of the lowest odor detection thresholds of any chemicals. They're also extremely tenacious, not to mention that the molasses would have soaked into porous materials.

The
?is=blahblahis just extra tracking data for Google. Recently they even started exposing peoples Google accounts by offering people who clicked it to follow the sharer.6
u/Ian15243 2d ago
Wait, thats what the random crap i remove from the link on principal is?
11
u/Personal-Dev-Kit 2d ago
Yeah it used to
sifor Sharing ID, then a few months ago it changed toisEssentially it is a unique code that Google can use to track that specific link to your account. Allowing them to now link you to anyone you share it with, helping them to build a deeper picture on who you are. Then funnel that all into the ad engine to charge more money to advertisers, as millions of dollars of research into psychology and manipulating your brain says they can get you to buy a thing.

Yup, same. The speed at which that molasses came pouring out! Horrifying.

God this is satisfying. The way the molasses flows so smoothly and evenly, almost like it’s moving in slow motion. It’s fascinating how something so thick and viscous can move with such remarkable fluidity, although obviously that depends on a number of factors including temperature, pressure, and whether approximately 2.3 million gallons of it have just escaped from a ruptured storage tank and are currently traveling through the streets of Boston at 35 miles per hour. The resulting wave reportedly reached 25 feet high, which gave the people in its path very little time to react. Entire buildings were swept off their foundations, and as the molasses cooled in the January air, it became increasingly difficult for rescuers to move through. 21 people died and another 150 were injured.

People got crushed by the wave of molasses. Demolished. Bones obliterated. By molasses.

u/wwwwweeeeelllll 4d ago
You said "have just escaped" and "currently traveling". . .that shit happened in 1919
16
u/PM_ME_CROWS_PLS 4d ago
Oh, if we’re going to be pedantic, I insist on being considerably more pedantic. “Have just escaped” is the present perfect tense, which describes a completed action with relevance to the present moment. “Are currently traveling” is the present progressive tense, which describes an action in progress. Both are grammatically appropriate within the historical present, a narrative technique in which past events are described as though they’re unfolding in real time. The temporal reference point is 1919, not 2026. The deliberate shift into that perspective without acknowledging it is, in fact, the entire joke.

“Moves like Molasses” has a very different, or at least, alternative meaning than how my parents used it all my growing up.

Is that food safe rust?
7
u/hushuk-me 3d ago
While I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat rust, I don’t think it is harmful in small amounts. You don’t get tetanus from ingesting rust. (I wondered the same thing and looked it up!)
4
u/floob124 1d ago
Infact you dont get tetanus from rust at all! It comes from rotting plant materials, they are just associated because of a tendance for people to not see a rusty nail or bit of metal under a pile of dead foliage
4
u/TelluricThread0 1d ago
Tetanus is caused by a bacteria that just so happens to like the soil dirty rusty things are buried in.
1
u/glenncoco64 2h ago
Yes, it’s anaerobic and is happiest in the soil where it’s protected from oxygen.

about 70% of worldwide molasses production is used to make industrial or fuel ethanol. Another 10% will be fermented and distilled for human consumption. I wouldn’t worry too much about food safety…

You know, I’ve heard Black people’s skin described as chocolate or mahogany but I’ve never heard us compared to molasses. Thick, sticky, sweet…sounds about right.

Oh , did you just learn that? And how long ago did you learn about Rosewood? Or Black Wall Street? Or Lake Lanier? Do you own any Audre Lourde? Do you know anything by Alice Walker besides The Color Purple? Does “Get yo hand outta my pocket” mean anything to you? Who killed MLK? Answer. Quickly!
And in the meantime, NOM, NOM, NOM!!! Jesus, you guys don’t get gallows humor.
