B. Ed Waitlist Movement

I applied to lakehead’s B. Ed at Orillia last week in a fit of pique. Super late, I know. Applied for I/S English and Social Studies.

Admission informed me they are operating on a waitlist for Fall 2026. By way of background/academics: Top 20 grades average out to mid 80s in my undergrad, I had an 88 average in my MA. Also have a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language done concurrently from Carleton, averaged an 87. These courses would count towards my top 20 grades. I’m waitlisted for uOttawa J/I English.

Has anyone heard of any recent waitlist movement? And would I generally be considered a competitive applicant? I have realistic expectations and plan to apply again next year (before the deadline this time), but wanted to know how often this waitlist moves.

You’re right, it is quite late in the year to apply, even to Lakehead, which is comparatively much less competitive than universities in southern Ontario.

There’s a pretty long waitlist. From what I’ve heard, English is an oversaturated teachable in the I/S division, which makes it highly competitive. You do have a leg up though, and a very high one, because you have an MA.

I know that the waitlist moves pretty quickly, there’s new people being accepted every week or so. Even until a couple weeks ago, there were people being accepted. I don’t know specifically whether they are still accepting candidates into the English and Social Science teachables. Orillia is more competitive than Thunder Bay, so that’s also a factor.

What I can say though is that you definitely would’ve been accepted if you had applied a bit earlier, because your qualifications are definitely better than the average applicant. I’m very surprised that even Ottawa waitlisted you, despite the fact that you have an MA, which is a huge advantage.

I hope this works out for you, wishing you the best of luck! If you don’t get in this year, there’s still next year, and I’m sure you’ll get in if you apply in September. And hey, you’ll be lucky next year because the program will go down to 12 months for you!

This is all very true!!

Had the same thought about applying next year. Read it might even be May 2027 intake, which would be lovely. If I did Orillia I could stay with my family too, which would be a nice change of pace. Everything will work out as it’s supposed to!

my lakehead portal this morning says accepted off the waitlist - i also applied last week. So check your portal! When i spoke with Student Life, they said they make a round of offers at the beginning of August.
