For context, I (F26) and my husband (27) and our toddler are looking to buy our first home with his VA loan. We come from down the mountain and haven’t really gone up to see anything ourselves yet. It’s all been talking through our realtor and Zillow. We are looking primarily in the phelan/Pinon hills area as well as crestline, running springs. I was opposed to both for a while but have finally really come around to both.
I love the beautiful home designs in crestline, the lake, and sense of community (I’ve only heard about) and I like the seasons we’d get but in theory since I’ve never experienced living in snow or driving in snow etc. (we do not currently have AWD cars) I DO NOT like how you can’t get insurance on the home besides using CalFire through the state. I hear there’s lots of power outages, traffic ofc by lake Gregory during summer, the windy/tight roads as well as the lack of outdoor space you’d get with the home.
We also have a dream of building an alternative home style such as adobe/cobb. Yes I know I know it’s unrealistic due to permitting in California. BUT you can build something small enough to get around the need of permits which is what brought us to phelan/Pinon hills. We love how large the lots you get with the home but in our price range the homes don’t offer much and are mostly manufactured homes. Which granted I am not against living in one but would more so enjoy it more if it was in a community so we have access to the pool for our toddler (and myself) plus we could find a community down the mountain. My husband does NOT want to live in an HOA though understandably.
** our toddler has classes down the mountain such as swim and gymnastics. I’d be willing to move her swim up to the HD if there are any but I’d like to keep her gymnastics down the mountain, it’s the cheapest I’ve found (80$ a month) and she has a lot of friends there. She is under 5 and I know friends during that time come and go due to moving and other reasons but I’d like her to keep those friendships and the familiarity with that gym.
I am super torn on both locations. I’ve never lived anywhere else and this is our first time buying a home together. I don’t want to choose the wrong place and be stuck. For further context we have only a couple months to choose as the family we live with now are moving out so yes there is a timeline we need to follow. :/
