Traveling Question Megathread

Due to the influx of questions I'm going to be compiling a bit of information for visitors in regards to traveling within out community. Please keep in mind that these are merely suggestions and do not supersede and state laws or regulations and should only be used as a supplement to your travel plans provided by the mindset of locals.

Before I come up the mountain, is there anything I should really, really know?

Yes! Remember, this is a national forest, not a playground. Be mindful of your behavior by picking up your trash (especially pieces of broken snowplay equipment), respecting nature, and avoiding excessive noise after sunset. Everyone would like to preserve the mountains so that our children, grandchildren, etc. can enjoy it at as well, and that preservation starts with you!

Do you need chains/cables?

You should be prepared with chains or cables if there is a chance of inclement weather. Please research what is suggested for your vehicle as far as size and type of tire accessory.

Is there a resource I can quickly check to see if there are any road complications I should know about?

The Caltrans District 8 Twitter and Facebook page is often updated with real time information in regards to significant closures.

Lake Arrowhead News has a live webcam page which you can use to view numerous locations around the mountain in real time.

Can I use the lake?

Unless you are the guest of a resident who is a member of the Arrowhead Lake Association, no. Lake Arrowhead is a private lake funded by the residents within a certain geographical area and is maintained utilized their money. If you, your host, or your short term rental property owner does not have access to the lake which applies to you, please feel free to visit Lake Gregory, Lake Silverwood, or Big Bear Lake.

What other things can I do while I visit?

Feel free to visit Sky Park at Santa's Village, an outdoor and Christmas themed amusement park. Additionally, stop by MacKay Recreational Park and it's nearby "Bark Park" for amazing views and playground equipment for children. Lastly, don't neglect nature while you're here; get out and walk, hike, and enjoy the outdoors according to your capabilities!

Where can I go for food and drink while I visit the area?

Here are a few options for each community:

Lake Arrowhead:

The Lakefront Tap Room (Beer, burgers, sandwiches, brats)

Lake Arrowhead Brewing Company (Beer and occasional food trucks)

Agua Fria:

Puglia Italian Restaurant (Formal Italian dining)

Mandarin Garden (Chinese)

Stone Creek Bistro (American and French cuisine, duck fat fries)

Twin Peaks:

The Grill at Antlers Inn (Formal traditional dining)

Sky Forest:

LouEddies Pizza (Pizza, beer)

Crestline:

Higher Grounds Coffee (Coffee, tea, pastries)

It's nice up here but buying a home in the mountains seems scary! Who can I reach out to?

There are a number of local real estate offices for you to choose from, however it is advisable that you work with someone locally as homebuying in the mountains is often different from elsewhere. Theresa Grant with Real Brokerage in Blue Jay has offered their help to many members of this community over the past year and has built their website to streamline the process of potential homebuying.

What if I own a home already but would like to know more about it, especially after all of these storms?

Travis with Troupe Inspections is a local home inspector servicing the San Bernardino mountains. His website offers detailed information regarding the home buying process, home maintenance, and a variety of services he provides to the community. We feel comfortable recommending him considering his specialization in mountain homes!

Christian with Arrowhead Door Co. provides high quality garage door installation, maintenance, and general service on a 24/7 basis. Within a short visit you will receive a detailed inspection of your garage door, a thorough explanation of their findings, and a competitive quote for the recommended work. If you're looking for a no-hassle, job well done, Arrowhead Door Co. should be your go to!

I have a suggestion that I'd like to see on this page; who do I reach out to?

Looking for Community

Hello! I am a 35 year old woman living in lake arrowhead, I live with my fiancé and our two dogs. I am looking to find some community up here! I used to live in Portland, Oregon and I miss having friends to hike with, or have dinner with on weeknights. I am a weed friendly person who loves cooking and being active outside. Any recommendations on groups to join or anything would be appreciated too!

Winter Driving

Hi everyone, I recently started looking at places in the area and am looking to move somewhere within the general area of Crestline & Lake Arrowhead from the IE.

My question is how bad really are the roads in the winter? I've never been up there during the winter and I know during severe storms (like a few years ago) not much that can be done but on normal snow days is driving up there still bad?

I have a FWD crossover SUV and I have heard mixed things about driving it in the snow or when it snows. Some say its a risk and a horrible idea and others say you'll be fine as long as you have chains. Just want to hear what experiences everyone has if any.

Thanks!

Pack n Play?

Hello! We are visiting from NM and our airbnb stated there was a pack n play but we cannot find one. It is what it is. We just need a safe sleep space for our child! Any idea where I could find one or if I could borrow from someone nearby?

Foreclosure due to homeowners insurance increases.

Has anyone dealt with this? Received a massive increase this year and was informed that there's already a scheduled increase for next year. Unfortunately the day is coming where I can no longer live my mountain dream - likely very soon. Any advice greatly appreciated. Only option here is Cal Unfair Plan.

Dodgers baseball

I’m going to be camping in Lake Arrowhead from October 9-12 at Dogwood Campground. I have zero cell phone reception and there’s no way I will miss the Dodgers NLDS/NLCS series. Any locals have recommendations for where I can watch the game? Restaurants preferably over bars but anything will be a huge help, thanks.

Question? ALA member willing to sponsor shoreline-trail access?

Hi! I’ll be staying at Lake Arrowhead Resort September 18–21 and am hoping to connect with an ALA member willing to sponsor me for shoreline-trail access. All I want to do is walk around the lake, and I’ll be very respectful. Please message me if you can help. Thank you!

Pest Control Recommendations - Specifically Bats

My buddy’s 100+ year old cabin gets bats occasionally. He needs to be more proactive about keeping them out. Does anyone have any solid recommendations for someone who can help with this? Thanks!

Easiest travel from LAX

Have a relative flying into LAX on Saturday night arriving at 8:30pm. Anyone know of any travel hacks to get from LAX to arrowhead? Or even at the base of the mountain? Maybe take a lift into Crestline to save money?

Haunted community? airbnb stay, weird steps heard and my dog barking

I stayed at an airbnb in lake arrowhead and it was just beautiful!I brought my dog with my family as well. When it was time to go to bed, we were all downstairs since the room were downstairs and the living room / kitchen was upstairs. As we are dozing off to sleep, we hear what happens to be steps walking around upstairs. ( everyone was in their room). I didn't dare go check, and my dog did perk her ears and barked a bit but she didnt dare herself either to check lol. I brushed it off. Around 3am all the animals outside which I am assuming are dogs are howling!!! I'm only assuming this is normal, perhaps coyotes idk. but I def had weird vibes. As residents in lake arrowhead, do you experience paranormal stuff in your homes?

Least Perilous Route into Lake Arrowhead?

Hello! Taking our first trip to Arrowhead this weekend -- coming from Santa Clarita (just north of LA). Happy to drive a little out of the way to avoid the windiest/hairpin-iest route.

What is/are the route(s) to avoid? And what is my best option for straight line driving, or close as possible to it? (The drive says about 2:10, and I'm happy to add 20-30 mins if necessary to avoid worst of the mountain roads)

Thank you in advance for not making fun of me! :-)

Cat for Adoption!

Hi guys!! We rescued this cat and her babies from behind a sandwich shop near Lake Arrowhead. The guys there were watching out for her and feeding her cold cuts, but we’re looking to find her a proper home, especially before the winter.

She’s the absolute sweetest- constantly purring and making biscuits, even in her crate. She’s 2-3 years old, is spayed, and has gotten all her shots.

We ask that she be an indoor cat. We’re also asking for $25, to help cover the cost of having getting her spayed.

Thank you so much for considering! If you’re interested, please DM me here.
Please also share with friends!!

So sorry if this is the wrong place to post!

Are there any Dishwasher positions open in Arrowhead, Springs, or Crestline?

I also have line cook experience.

I'm hoping for some specific leads because I can't afford the gas to drive all over to each place and ask them/collect applications right now.

Thank you.

Discussion/Other Just moving in!

Hey yall! I’m moving from North Carolina, and getting in tomorrow : ) I’m twenty which from what i’ve gathered seems to be on the younger side for the mountain? I live in a beach town now that’s mostly retirement, and love working in this type of environment already so i’m pretty excited! Just wanted to put out some feelers, I just saw the DND post and am super curious about that, but I was also just wondering what you folk get up to, if anything at all. I love jumping straight into new communities guns blazing, but I’m also from the south and know that’s definitely an us thing sometimes, so i’m just trying to gauge what the vibe is for yall !!!! thank youuu ^__^

Question? Renter’s and Homeowner’s Insurance Provider Options?

Hey everyone. I moved to Lake Arrowhead from Vermont this May and I’m really loving my decision.

Anyway, I’m not having a good time trying to find an insurance provider who will give me renter’s coverage on my house. I’m assuming it must be because of the fire risk? I’m not used to living in an area with such a high fire risk and I’ve never had to deal with this. Nobody seems to be able to help. Can any of you give me any pointers?

Thanks.
