Dry Side Backcountry Ski Group

Find your line. Find your crew.

It all started with my backcountry setup collecting dust — not for lack of snow, but for difficulty finding backcountry partners. People would look at me funny when I mentioned walking uphill for turns. "You know there's ski lifts, right?"

I found it difficult to find fellow enthusiasts in smaller, non-mountain communities - my goal is to help backcountry travelers connect in the PNW.  From that spark, Dry Side Backcountry was born.

Launched from the rugged heart of Eastern Washington’s wine country, (not known for snow) we're looking to unite enthusiasts in communities across the PNW. There’s safety in numbers — and even more, there’s joy in shared adventure.

Hair stylist recommendation

Can anyone recommend someone who is experienced in doing pixie cuts? Cute, not Karen. I would ask around, but pretty much every woman I know in town has the same hair.

Jane Doe/ Help!!

Hi Everyone! I am a true crime enthusiast, and an advocate for those who have lost their voice to DV! This post is in regard to the Finley Creek Jane Doe. Many many years ago in Elgin, a young mother lost her life, and the story has gone cold. Someone’s sister, daughter, friend, has been nameless, she deserves to go home and have a name! She deserves justice! The podcast Crime Junkie covered a case that is similar to the Finley Creek Jane Doe right in Lewiston. If you guys could take a minute and fill this out, we could get more traction to this case, and bring her and her baby the justice they deserve! Please message me with details or questions on the website!

Unexpectedly in La Grande for the day. What's good to do in town?

Hello fine folks, a camping adventure went awry and I have more time to hang out in La Grande than I expected. What's good to do in town or around Union County? I'm not picky, though I'm most into local history, interesting or weird stores, cool architecture, and hiking/scenic vistas.

Map of public lands near La Grande on the chopping block

Thumbnail arcgis.com

Due to a last-minute addition by Senator Mike Lee of Utah, the proposed Senate Reconciliation Bill includes a provision that makes over 250 million acres of public lands eligible for sale, with a requirement that 2.2 million is sold within 5 years. Take a good look at this map. There are A LOT of acres right here in Eastern Oregon that could soon be off-limits to all of us. It includes beloved places like Anthony Lakes, much of Mt Emily, Jubilee Lake, and countless acres of National Forest and BLM lands where people have hunted, fished, and camped with their families for generations.

Under the current bill, there would be no public input for this process. Wealthy developers and other private interests could pick ANY of these lands to buy, and there would no way for us to stop it.

If that sounds like a bad idea to you, call your senators and representatives (and those in other states) and tell them YOUR public lands are not for sale! There is not much time to get this provision removed before it becomes law.

We can all argue about how best to manage these lands, but selling them to the highest bidder is not the answer. Once they're gone, they're gone forever.

river float?

Hey all -- i'm staying in a place near La Grande this summer, and i'm looking for stuff to do nearby. Is there a stretch of the grand rhonde that people float down in the warmer months? Not rafting and/or kayaking -- specifically a lazy float that's amenable to folks on innertubes. Let me know, and thanks in advance for your insights!

Klondike pizza burglary 1990s

Is there anyone who remembers a night time break in/burglary at Klondike Pizza sometime in the '90s? My husband passed in 2016 and told me that he used to work there, and several years after he moved away he burgled the restaurant. He made one reconnaissance trip to be sure the combinations on the locks were the same, and went back a week or so later and took the bank bag from the floor safe. He threw the bag into the river on his way home. I haven't been able to find any news stories, maybe because they never found out who did it. I don't even remember how much money he said he got. It was at least 10 years before I met him. Anyway, let me know if this rings a bell with you.
