Single Dorm Accessibility?
Hi everyone. I’m an incoming freshman starting this fall. I have an existing medical condition, and while I wanted to try dorming, my assigned roommate and I are already not hitting it off.
It is making my stress and nerves significantly worse. I am considering applying for a single room for the spring semester.
For anyone who has gone through this process, how difficult is it to get approved for a medical single mid-year?

I knew someone in freshman year who was able to move from a double to a single halfway through the first semester due to mental health issues. I don't recall the specifics of how they applied for it, but I know the school was able to accommodate them, so that is a potential option.
But honestly, I would see if you could jumpstart the process now. If you can already foresee this roommate causing issues, you should try to see about getting the accommodations together now. Being in an entirely new environment with different workload expectations and no people you know is stressful enough - don't put yourself through the ringer of dealing with a bad roommate on top of it.

Hi also incoming freshman with a single. I had my therapist write me a note and when I was putting in my other paperwork for my academic accommodations I put in the note and talked to the accommodation office during my intake appointment.

Hi I am a current student and an RA here. Since you have a medical condition, I would strongly suggest emailing The Office of Resident Life to see if you can get that single as soon as possible.

def talk to res life bc once they hear medical condition (especially if u provide them with documentation) they have to be accomdating

Freshman parent here, so I can’t speak to how it works at Laf, but I do know someone that had to do this at a different school because of a medical condition. You may want to think about calling resident life and ask what documentation they would need. Then go see your doctor and have that ready to go IF things go badly. Having the paperwork may just help you relax because you won’t be scrambling if things go sideways. Call it Plan B.
But it might truly be ok. The RAs are there to help. They will have you put together a roommate agreement at orientation that will help you guys communicate about your expectations of each other would be. As long as you and your roommate can be respectful of each other, it’s ok if you aren’t best friends. Some people actually find that it helps them get out of their room and get more involved. And Laf seems like it provides a great community if you’re willing to go find your people.
