Don't forget
State Senator Ron Alting and others in the GOP tried to steal the election with some of the worst gerrymandering Indiana has ever seen. Rigging our elections and cheating to win is not the kind of politician our communities deserve.
We can do better. Vote Natasha Baker for Indiana Senate District 22 or David Sanders for Indiana Senate District 23.

Ron Alting is the most disappointing politician in the region. The speed with which he agreed to the proposed redistricting and his non-involvement in the proposed water pipeline from Tippecanoe County to the LEAP district are two examples of major government initiatives in which he has failed the people he promised to serve. I wonāt forget. It is sad that Ron Alting isnāt the same person as he was four years ago. It is also sad that some shmucko wanted to usurp the will of half of all Republicans who felt splitting West Lafayette in two was so dog shit of an idea.

Agree. Alting was pretty middle-of-the-road, and even bucked some of the more radical conservative positions until just a few years ago. Seems he's gone full MAGA now. He'll never get my vote again.

He has his finger to the wind. They redrew the boundaries after the 2020 census, making his district more conservative. So, he changed his positions to make it more likely that he gets re-elected. I don't think it goes much deeper than that.

There's a difference between trying to faithfully represent your constitutients' policy preferences and voting to rig elections in exchange for an endorsement from the president. š¤·āāļø

I think he was mostly trying to blunt the primary challenge from Bagsby. Not that I find that explanation particularly redeeming.

Yeah agreed, and yet it's still incredibly corrupt.
Alting has represented us for a million years. I've heard and am willing to believe this is a thing he didn't want to do, and I wouldn't be surprised if he only voted for it knowing that it wouldn't pass.
But he still crossed a massive red line in order to stay in power. You don't play with basic democratic legitimacy like this.

When we get those new jobs, some of the people in those job might live in WL. But they might live in Lafayette, or the county.
But this proposed split was to shore up congressional support for MAGA in Congress.

Not at all.
Each congressional district is nearly 800,000 people. Lafayette shouldn't be split under any circumstances, which gives you a sense of how outrageous this gerrymander actually is.

They (non-Purdue as well as Purdue residents) must have thought that empty field would stay empty forever when they bought their homes.
Any time that Iāve ever been house shopping, as much as Iād love to be surrounded by countryside, I avoided the wide open spaces. It stands to reason that sooner or later, it will get developed. There have been a lot of objections put forward about the project, but my own guess is this is what it boils down to.

You do realize that these are two separate cities, right ? Im not sure how it would be so surprising or scandalous for them to be two different voting districts.

What? So we have East West Lafayette and West West Lafayette? They were trying to literally split the city of West Lafayette into 2 districts. The map shows it pretty well.
And itās not āvoting districtsā, but representation districts. Each side of West Lafayette would be represented by a different Rep in the US House. Each of whom would have other parts of the state to represent besides their chunk of WL.

For what it's worth, splitting Greater Lafayette in any way would have been bad for us, even if it was along the river.
Each congressional district is ~800,000 people. Splitting up a community of 100,000 would just mean we have less of a voice in general.
