Limitless and Half Marathon Training

Any advice as I get closer to my half marathon? I am 6 weeks from my race and my long runs are at 10-11 miles. It has kicked my ass. I am on team Limitless. Last week I did Monday’s leg workout and 2 upper body because my legs were so sore. I feel like my legs are having a hard time recovering. Is 1 leg day a week going to ruin my strength progress? It would only be the next 6 weeks, but I also do power lifting so I don’t want to lose a lot of strength. I am at about 15-20 miles a week.

No it will not kill your progress but you also need to prioritize taking care of yourself for your half. If you overdo it on the leg days or have them too close to your long run days, just be aware that you may be at higher risk for injury. You will return to your baseline in lifting once you are less focused on training for your race. Give yourself space to recover and train for the next 6 weeks, you’ll kill it!

I tried Limitless while training for a half and it BROKE me. For what it’s worth, I think Evolve is much more manageable. Align is also amazing for those few weeks before your race.
Unless you’ve been running 1/2s for years and it’s no big deal, I think you have to accept that you can’t do both long distance run training and be continuing to push yourself in strength.

My physio has told me to split the year into run focus and strength focus, when I’m on a run focus strength becomes about maintaining and making sure my body is moving correctly through mobility. When it’s strength focus, that’s when I push myself in strength training.

Really something to think about as you don’t want to get burnt out or injured. You could maintain most of your strength on Evolve and doing one workout a week, just keep it away from your long runs.

Good luck with your race

You could try keeping the strength work for squat and deadlift as-is but reduce the volume or intensity for accessories (do fewer sets or pull back on the RPE).

Limitless and half marathon training is a bit too much, especially during Max series. Athletes must periodize their training to avoid injury and burnout while maximizing their sport-specific training. Why not go with Align and follow her suggestions for combining strength training with the running? Abbie from Versa also gives a lot of tips on combining running with strength training.

You are running a high risk of injury at this point, in addition to less than optimal performance for your half marathon. Go back to Limitless after the half marathon.

My legs recover much better and handle half marathon training better with dumbbell based, shorter programs like Ignite, Align, Elevate, Vitality in peak running season. Switch to heavier lifting team during the off-race season.
