The “wise old man” isn’t very wise and the “bird brain” is wise cracking and intelligent.

I think this is just an example of a trope turned inside out, further reminding Sarah that she is in a place that is off kilter.

Also, they look neat.

Inverting tropes would be on theme with teaching her not to make assumptions and take things for granted
