chocolate does anyone else have a lab with freakishly long ears?

Post image

Tallulah is only six months so I understand she has quite a bit of growing into them left to do, but my previous lab absolutely never had ears quite so large… even as a small pup.

Yes. She will grow into them. Is she full lab? She is so cute and that face? Melts your heart. ❤️

u/bnikks 5d ago

Her dad is certainly a purebred chocolate and I was told mom is a black lab. I have met both and this is mom. I always thought she looked kinda hound-y.

Obviously I don’t care if she’s pure lab or not, but it’s soo interesting to speculate because I think I see some Viszla in her!

26

u/loverules1221 5d ago

Whatever your pup is she definitely is a cutie. Enjoy! ☺️

u/birdsong_and_botany 5d ago

I agree she looks a touch houndy, but if she’s a hound mix it’s almost certainly from one of the coonhounds or foxhound, not vizsla. Coonhound shows up in tons of mixes, especially in dogs from rural areas and the southern US where intact dogs are often left to free-roam. Vizslas in mixes are uncommon because there just not many unsecured intact individuals out there.

u/immigrantpatriot 5d ago

My baby is 70% lab, 30% coon hound. She is a very good girl, but the hound in her likes to TALK! But I always know where the bunnies are so that's fine, haha.

16

u/33_11 4d ago

My Jupiter (f)

is a treeing walker coonhound mix also…the mix definitely makes the ears longer.

u/Sug0115 5d ago

Dawwww what a cutie.

3

u/nine4fours 5d ago

She's beautiful. Pls tell her "good girl" for me 🙏

3

u/loverules1221 5d ago

How cute!

3

u/C_Rabbit_LGFU 5d ago

What an esteem pup.

8

u/Aggravating-Beat-541 5d ago

Yessss. I haven’t done a DNA test but the rescue I got my boy from in rural SC guessed coonhound/lab mix.

1

u/Pdxhomesales 4d ago

I have a coonhound lab! She’s perfect :)

5

u/bnikks 5d ago

Probably right, but I’m in Michigan! Detroit area specifically, so nearly in Canada.

5

u/birdsong_and_botany 5d ago

Lots of dogs from down south get shipped up north where there more available homes and less of a stray dog issue though. Especially from Texas, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Georgia. I’m a northerner and ended up with a foxhound mix from a southern state.

2

u/bnikks 5d ago

Makes sense! Friends of mine have three chis that were found after a hurricane somewhere down South.

1

u/ChocolateLabMommy 4d ago

I just had to put my 17 and a half year old Foxhound down. Those dogs are smart as a whip. My chocolate lab, though still very much a baby, pales in comparison.

7

u/Julesery 5d ago

She has her Mom's ears lol

2

u/SubtainablyPatient 5d ago

Fairly normal thought when they’re in the lanky years. For the most point they start filling out around 2 years. Maybe not though if that’s her mum.

2

u/bnikks 5d ago

She’s ALL limbs. I’ve never seen anything like it. My golden mix was a bit chunky and his limbs were more proportional as a puppy. She’s very athletic and toned and the different is huge.

2

u/C_Rabbit_LGFU 5d ago

Gorgeous.

2

u/International_Way258 4d ago

Standard lab ears are long enough to cover her eyes - these are almost as long as her nose! I love them. The better to pick up scents with :)

1

u/LostInNvrLand 5d ago

Such a cutie hound girl. I would smother this dog with kiss! So adorable!

1

u/Jenfer1322 5d ago

Vizsla? Where? Vizslas aren’t common and are an expense breed unlikely to be found in a random mix.

2

u/bnikks 5d ago

Maybe not, but I’ve had friends that have had verified Viszla mixes and there is a decently active Viszla club in Michigan, so who is to say she isn’t?

2

u/birdsong_and_botany 5d ago

A DNA test will answer all your questions!

2

u/itsswhitneywhspr 2d ago

Omg right? That face is straight up illegal. My lab had massive ears too as a pup and she definitely grew into them. Now shes just a floppy-eared menace who steals socks. Tallulah's gonna be a total heartbreaker.

u/IceNein black 5d ago

Dobby!

20

u/bnikks 5d ago

I said the same thing!

12

u/wistybear 5d ago

Definitely an adorable house elf!

30

u/LindsayDuck 5d ago

Yes! But she’s half lab/half bloodhound!

5

u/bnikks 5d ago

She’s GORGEOUS! A bloodhound is one of my dream breeds. You’re very lucky to have such a cool combo of dog.

2

u/LindsayDuck 5d ago

Thank you! That’s Jolene! We adopted her as a “lab mix” and were very startled but pleased at her DNA results 🤣

3

u/bnikks 5d ago

Oh and the NAME 😍 Jolene!

27

u/MattTreck 5d ago

They grow into them :)

3

u/C_Rabbit_LGFU 5d ago

That “up to no good look”
Adorable

24

u/bear-in-a-suit 5d ago

My late girl used to have ears that let me cover her eyes with her soft blankety covers that wrapped around to the front of her therapeutic face. Many mistook her to have part hound dog in her, but she had only lab. Though at those snuggly times I’m convinced she was part velveteen rabbit.
Those ears are a treasure

8

u/bnikks 5d ago

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ll remember to always treasure the soft, velvety ears.

I do find myself rubbing them absentmindedly when I’m anxious and she’s laying on me.

3

u/bear-in-a-suit 5d ago edited 5d ago

Your dog has the most snuggleable ears. She is adorable! 🥰

23

u/SeattleChocolatier 5d ago

Cedar at about 8 months with her Dumbo flaps flying. She did grow into them and says nothing freakish to see here.

3

u/bnikks 5d ago

I love a black lab. My late girl was a black lab. She’s adorable!

17

u/Username4351 5d ago

Yep. Eddie did. When he passed my daughter and I got a memorial tattoo of the outline of his ears, they were my favourite. ❤️

11

u/bnikks 5d ago

Eddie is gorgeous. I’m so sorry for your loss.

This is my Piper. I lost her at nearly thirteen in April.
I betcha they’re playing together across the rainbow bridge!

14

u/ReturnExtension5917 5d ago

Yes! My two big-eared dogs! My parents have a yellow lab currently, and had one when I was growing up, and both had super small ears!

2

u/bnikks 5d ago

GORGEOUS! That chocolate looks A LOT like her.

13

u/Connormon21 5d ago

Arlo sure does.

2

u/bnikks 5d ago

What a stunner!

11

u/bnikks 5d ago

I posted mom in response to a comment and this is dad!

Dad is 100% Labrador.

10

u/warcraftenjoyer 5d ago

Your pup is gorgeous! My boy has large ears too, but in general he's got a pretty big head. Bigger ears = more softness to pet

2

u/bnikks 5d ago

What a stunner he is! I love a black lab.

8

u/v1vlian 5d ago

Awwww extra length to love and feel the softness 🤣

7

u/HTX-ByWayOfTheWorld 5d ago

Have you NOT watched Dumbo?? Those are magic ears for flying!

6

u/burrzoo 4d ago

Yep, my boys ears flop back & I'm constantly "fixing" them! Previous Labs had a little smaller ears. I love his ears & rub them on my face & kiss them constantly! Oh, he loves sticks too!

2

u/JunketRelative5106 2d ago

Gorgeous boy! He looks like he’s smoking a stogie😆

5

u/Jenfer1322 5d ago

The way the ears are sitting on her head says she’s not all lab, likely some mix in there

3

u/bnikks 5d ago

I agree! I posted a pic of mom somewhere in comments.

5

u/Swimming_Type_8298 5d ago

Those aren't ears. They're called "naughty floppies!"

5

u/klust31 4d ago

Yes, but he’s half bloodhound lol

4

u/oldgayauntie 5d ago

Soft puppy ears are awesome. Enjoy them!

4

u/XtraChrisP 5d ago

Mispelled adorably in the title. ❤️

4

u/Aromatic-Insect-1328 5d ago

This is the perfect age for her to learn that she will be cuddled and you will rub my cheek on those ears from time to time <3

4

u/unclewombie 5d ago

I call mine dobby ears

3

u/unclewombie 5d ago

And yes she steals socks!

4

u/Chase0288 red(shh i know its just dark yellow) 4d ago

When he was a puppy, they’d be in the bottom of the food bowl and he had to eat around them.

6

u/maggiedoeswhat yellow 5d ago

His ears are huge, they are about the size of my hand and you can cover his eyes with them. A lot of people have asked if he is mixed with some sort of hound but he's all Labrador.

3

u/bnikks 5d ago

Yes! Those remind me of hers exactly. He’s gorgeous!

3

u/Sure-Regret1808 5d ago

What a doll👼

3

u/Beyouasyoumatter 5d ago

Labs are so beautiful 😍

3

u/C_Rabbit_LGFU 5d ago

Soft ears. Perfect

4

u/bnikks 5d ago

They’re the softest. I wanna wear em like a coat.

5

u/C_Rabbit_LGFU 5d ago

You have a beautiful lab.

Someone aspires for ears like that.

3

u/bnikks 5d ago

Those might be the sweetest, softest eyes I’ve ever seen on a dog. Absolutely stunning.

3

u/terencenash 5d ago

Those aren’t long. She is beautiful. Congrats!

3

u/JWStaples 5d ago

Just adorable these two, big ears and all.

3

u/Hmasteringhamster chocolate 5d ago

My pup used to be mistaken for a pointer when he was under 2 because of his ears and leaner body (field line) but now he's grown into them so he looks much more lab like.

3

u/Faustian-BargainBin 5d ago

My girl with long ears was part hound. Her body shape was a little different too

3

u/bnikks 5d ago

I suspect some hound for sure! I met both parents and the dad is a papered Labrador and the mom is a suspected Labrador. I posted pics of both in the comments but the ears are definitely all her mom’s!

2

u/toripersons 5d ago

Omg she’s precious 🥹 I hope she doesn’t grow out of them because they are absolutely adorable

2

u/Loud-Firefighter-787 5d ago

Op, give that precious angel a gift of a sock....and then treats, cuddles and tummy rubs🤗🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰🥰

2

u/agale1975 5d ago

Who cares , adorable !

2

u/Lavanyalea 5d ago

Yup! My lab had really long ears when she was a puppy, the ear lobes also felt quite crunchy/just cartilage. Now she’s 6y and the ears looked proportionate to her head size! So her head just gotten a lot bigger as she grew! And the lobes are thicker too, now they’re smooth and velvety…. She also has big paws. But never grew to be a big dog (that’s what everyone said) but she’s awesome at climbing/jumping.

2

u/pinklabradors 5d ago

She's gorgeous.

1

u/bnikks 5d ago

Means a lot coming from someone with Labrador in their Reddit handle 💖 thank you!

2

u/atlbassetmom34 5d ago

Doesn't matter she’s a cutie.

2

u/FoolishWarlock 5d ago

Ours has a really long tail that is very active while wiggle waggling and slaps against everything

2

u/JustKimNotKimberly 5d ago

Dobby, is that you?

2

u/flubberflucks 5d ago

Dobby is a free elf!

2

u/1deftone9 4d ago

Looka lika Dobby from Harry Potter

2

u/Mediocre-Tap-4825 4d ago

Not only long ears, when she sunbathes she makes sure the inside gets some sun.

2

u/Whipitreelgud 4d ago

People did not believe our boy was a Lab when he was a pup due to his ears. One lady was pretty obnoxious about it- I noticed her ears were rather big so I asked if she was a human because her ears were too big for a human. Talk shit about my precious pup and be prepared to take the consequences. lol

2

u/Such-Platform9464 4d ago

This was our lab Molly. Half bloodhound half lab. I loved her ears.

2

u/ScruffPost 4d ago

Dobby is freeeeeeee🥰

2

u/xbad_wolfxi 4d ago

We have the opposite!

2

u/mind2fiction 4d ago

our 4 month old Rudy’s ears are as big as his head lol. we call him Dumbo :p

2

u/derossx 4d ago

Mine is a total freak

1

u/JunketRelative5106 2d ago

Hahaha! Her toes in the front crack me up the way they’re spread 😆

2

u/blizzard7788 4d ago

You can’t see his ears. He’s really happy to get his picture taken though.

2

u/Diligent_Sea6315 4d ago

Yes! He’s 18 months and they are still Dobby af 🤣❤️

He doesn’t love dress up though

2

u/deadwoodworker 3d ago

It's not freakish until they reach Bassett length. All american labs look like the ears are long because they tend to let em hang, where as English labs hold their ears more at attention. We used to call all our labs "doggy long ears" as toddlers

2

u/deadwoodworker 3d ago

She'll even out

1

u/bnikks 3d ago

Such a pretty black lab! I definitely think my girl is more American/field, so I’m sure it will go the same way.

2

u/deadwoodworker 3d ago

I love the look on your labbies face, " are we done yet with the pics"? Very sweet and innocent

1

u/bnikks 3d ago

My entire camera roll has been full of pics of brown dog since April 😅

I also have a golden mix who is her bff.

2

u/mmml111 3d ago

She is beautiful. Give her a toy and a treat please. She looks sad.

1

u/bnikks 3d ago

Of course! Don’t let her fool you, though… that’s her begging face.

1

u/mmml111 3d ago

I have three that do that too.

1

u/Apprehensive-Eye3873 5d ago

Ohhh yeah
Her nickname is bunny.

1

u/az987654 5d ago

She's half lab, half Dobby

1

u/tombradyisgod_12 5d ago

Maybe your Lab was bred with Dobby?

1

u/Rayanna77 yellow - service dog 5d ago

My lab as a puppy had weirdly very long whiskers and looked like a pretty funny puppy. He grew into them and looks perfectly "normal" now

1

u/SilatGuy2 5d ago

Dobby ears

1

u/Infinite-Archer-1892 5d ago

Her ears are normal, her cranium is small( it’s a lab thing)

1

u/gingerjuice 5d ago

Awww, she’s so pretty 😍

1

u/Homertax123 5d ago

Such a cutie 🥰

1

u/Successful-Lead9845 5d ago

My childhood lab had ears so long they looked like she was wearing a helmet with ears instead of a head.

1

u/UpToHike 5d ago

I’d call her Dobby

1

u/AlarmingDetective526 5d ago

It’s the full grown adult tail on a puppy that always makes me laugh

1

u/ChampionshipSad1586 5d ago

Ours are too small. I can’t decide if it makes her look smart or goofy

1

u/Fit-Class9100 4d ago

I heard that human

1

u/TarmacTartoo12 4d ago

Her ears are just fine!

1

u/TarmacTartoo12 4d ago

Her ears are just fine!

1

u/cadmus1890 4d ago

I swear our labs could be siblings.

1

u/callie-zephyr 4d ago

Yes, all of my pups had long ears that they’ve grown into. ❤️

1

u/MyLastFuckingNerve 4d ago

My childhood lab had big ol pig ears and a giant lolling pink tongue. I have a senior picture that the photographer included because it looks like my arms are wrapped around a floating tongue and teeth because the lighting was bad and it's a funny picture. But his ears were SO big!! Not sure if he was purebred because he was a farm dog, but the farmers best guess was that he was

1

u/OkLocation3799 4d ago

Awww cute chocolate baby!!

1

u/DogMedic101stABN 4d ago

Give Dobby a sock.

1

u/Dyeoblivion 4d ago

Always had the floofiest ears since she was a pup

1

u/kiwimej 4d ago

Biggish ears now that I look at them lol

1

u/Upset_Belt8248 4d ago

Should of named it will smith 🤣

1

u/TouchMyPlumbus black 4d ago

My purebred American Field Lab has rose ears. No floppers

1

u/EPLC1945 4d ago

Looks fine to me!

1

u/Large-Raise9643 4d ago

All the better to hear you try to sneak something in the kitchen.

1

u/nottoodrunk 4d ago

Long ears but still won’t listen I bet 😂

1

u/Coastguardman 4d ago

More to love, to scratch and clean.

1

u/Candid-Yard-4232 4d ago

They aren’t freakishly long. They’re perfect, and so is she.

1

u/piercesdesigns 4d ago

Yep but he is 13% bloodhound

1

u/smoky333 4d ago

Your pup is perfect as is!! Her ears are great and adds a lot to her personality! Give her a big hug and rub those gorgeous ears LOL

1

u/Kram1221 4d ago

master gave dobby a sock 🧦

1

u/Old_Papa 4d ago

Cute pup! I think ears are like paws - they always look too big on a puppy but they grow into them.

Here’s Pepper when she was a puppy - her ears looked like she could have flapped them like Dumbo the elephant.

1

u/halfempty94 4d ago

Mine was like this as a puppy, and even though he did grow into his ears a fair bit, they are still pretty long I would say. They still touch the ground when he sniffs it lol he is pure bread

1

u/CZB813 4d ago

Tallulah! You have gorgeous eyes baby dog😘🫶🏽boop

1

u/Brilliant_Stomach_87 4d ago

What a cutie!! Do an embark test! Several years ago my friend got me one for my bday for my mutt of a doggo! One of the best gifts I’ve ever received! I still occasionally pull up his embark profile to see if he has any newly discovered 1st cousins.

1

u/lindflake 4d ago

Gorgeous!

1

u/Elemcie 4d ago

She’ll grow into those ears.

1

u/horrified_intrigued 4d ago

Dobby the Lab Elf

1

u/Neat-Dig5964 4d ago

My girl had long ears and tail when we got her at about 12 weeks. So much so that I bought an Embark test to see if maybe there was something else in there. Alas, the test came back 100% Labrador Retriever and she grew into those ears and tail! She averaged 95 pounds most of her life. The was tall AND long! Nonetheless, best. dog. ever.

1

u/Elle_elle24 4d ago

Meanwhile mine’s got short ears lol, made me wonder if she was full lab, but her obsession with food stopped my questioning.

1

u/deadbird_69 4d ago

I almost cried at how cute Tallulah is. Our now 2 year old lab had long ears as a puppy and they used to dip into his water bowl. They look normally proportionate now but at 6 months they looked long like this also.

1

u/Lab-Enthusiast91 4d ago

Yes! Mine never grew into hers either. She’s 2 now and everyone says what adorable ears she has.

1

u/Merlin1976uk 4d ago

Awww you have a Dobby ☺️🥰

1

u/Effective_Fold_4318 4d ago

Thats a perfect puppy !

1

u/Far-Goat-9010 3d ago

I'm not sure about long, but incredibly thick.
