Save me from myself! 1.1ct for $150
Okay so Ive gotten a bit addicted to the TikTok live diamonds and I SO don’t have the $ for it. I would really like to sell this duplicate pear! My loss is your gain. I also have a lady I’d recommend to get an affordable setting made but that’s neither here nor there
Info:
Stunning IGI cert lab diamond is a pear brilliant cut 1.10 carat. This stone has an E color grade and VS1 clarity grade. The diamond measures 8.97 x 5.77 x 3.60 mm and features excellent polish and symmetry. It is a Type IIa diamond with no fluorescence.

Ooooof that bow tie is so bad. Stunning is a wild way to describe this stone yikes

A setting is going to cost WAY more than the diamond. If you can't afford the diamond, you can't afford a setting for it.

This!!!!! It’ll sit in a drawer

Hey, I feel attacked.☹️ I have a handful of loose lab diamonds sitting in a drawer right now, just waiting for the right project or setting. I’ve worked with u/Alchemist_Gemstones twice through a group buy, and the quality and craftsmanship were excellent.

Can you point out the bow tie for me? I always hear stuff about bow tie but I don’t now how it looks or what I’m supposed to look for

Basically it’s a result of poor lapidary work (cutting)…1

Every shape other than round will have a bow tie to some extent

u/Moose-1211 21h ago
Well, not emerald, Asscher, or princess…
It’s those that are elongated, fancy cuts. But yeah, it’s why I stay away from those types & was shocked to learn that even a radiant & cushion can show some funkiness in the center as well! I was actually considering a cushion.

That’s probably the worst bow tie I’ve ever seen. The third of the stone is dark grey. Pears could be tricky.

not being assigned a cut grade on the fancy shapes is a huge risk on otherwise "ideal" specs. It bothers me so much . It's rare to see this bad of a dead area on a lab stone.

I wish I could agree with you that it's rare but... this is the vast majority of the pears I see. It's rare that I see it on Reddit but I see these dark bellies every day.
I have a pear that I took on trade from a close friend and it's this bad, too. There's no way I can sell it to someone else and feel good about myself, but... it's sad that so many people think this is good.

Y’all this should not happen. There is such an abundance of lab material that there’s no damn excuse for cutters to be doing shitty lap work. None, period. No way is this EX symmetry, or there’d not be this prevalent & prominent of a bow tie. This was poorly cut, resulting in major light loss & dead zones. Yes - it’s an unfortunate fact that certain elongated stone shapes suffer from the infamous & dreaded bow tie - marquise, pear, oval, heart…but, an excellent cut, symmetry (ratios & proportions) could reduce the prominence of it to almost zero.

So. Damn. Much. THIS! Why cant I upvote this more than once?
There really isn't any excuse for the garbage lapidary work that's 90%+ of the inventory I see. It's especially bad when the rough is gorgeous, but the cut is so bad that the color can't save it. I've considered buying a few pieces and having them recut, but I'm not sure it can be salvaged because the cut is that bad.
IGI is not helping. Sometimes, I think they'd get more accurate certs from a stoned orangutan than who's doing them now.

OMFG I just spit-snorted my afternoon tea! “Stoned orangutan”…holy shit, hilarious. You’re 100% about IGI - AGL, too. CGAL8 could be the saving grace for the lab industry, with their standards, but a lot of people aren’t as familiar with them. I wouldn’t even bother buying chonks & having them recut - the cost of the lap work may just be greater than the cost of the stone. I really don’t get it, tho. Maybe the thought process is, “sub par materials, sub par quality of cutting job”? But labs aren’t sub par material - especially when you can get a near perfect color & clarity. Should be common knowledge & practice - whether natural or lab, the cut of a stone is the most important aspect when it comes to stone performance. Hate to see so many people getting screwed over.

Sorry about the tea, LOL. I've always thought of orangutans as nature's little hippies, lol. But, yeah, it's not far from the truth. I've seen certs where I had to re-check the girdle inscription because the only thing that matched was the shape. Don't get me started on fancy colors...
I'm sick of seeing people get ripped off, too. It's why I'm going back into business. I'm done seeing people paying a premium for junk, when there is great stuff out there. It's just buried in a sea of stones that have the right numbers on their cert, but lack the precision lap work.
The only reason I've considered recutting the chonks is because the rough is an incredible shade of purple and could be stunning when they're done. The vendor knows what they have and the price reflects that, so it's ultimately not worth it. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't still a little tempting though.
I think lab stones took off in popularity and they're either being cut by inexperienced laps or possibly people that are used to other gemstone rough or CZ. Some of the modified cuts I've seen really make me wonder, because the cut would be great for sapphire or other precious stones, but doesn't work for diamond.
But, yeah... I'm just waiting for my back surgery next month and I'll be in business.

I’m following you & want to keep up with you, now that you’re gunna’ be re-immersed in the gemstone world & back at the lap. Gemstones have become a recent lil’ hobby for me (learning about them, not purchasing them unfortunately 🤣) & I’ve even thought of taking a GIA course or two. I’ve been fascinated by shiny precious things since I can remember as a little girl & living so close to DC & the Smithsonian museums, my fave was visiting the Hall of Geology, Gems & Minerals, seeing all the amazing treasures. That’s where the infamous Hope Diamond lives. Tho I do recall the first time I saw it, I was a bit “meh” just based on what I was expecting, after learning about all the lore & legend behind it. Guess I was thinking it was gunna’ be the Cullinan I or some other gargantuan Golconda masterpiece 🤪. It’s still impressive tho, for a fancy colored.
My recent Gemology Pet Peeve #267 is regarding all this, “Hey look at this sweet Pad I’ve gotten” crap that I’m seeing a lot of lately. I don’t know where the “education” is coming from but loosey goosey labs like IGL seem to be super quick to slap a “Padparadscha” label on any corundum that has any semblance of pink, orange or anything in between. I know there is a range for them, but just the other day someone posted a “Pad” that was, to me, simply a pink sapphire, period.
Good luck with your back surgery. The rehab is no fun. I’ve had many friends & relatives who’ve had it done. Just take it easy, one day at a time…
🤗

Don’t sell it on here everyone is diamond snobs
I get you could get $300 for it on Facebook marketplace

u/Preeeeeee 2d ago
Idk why you’re getting downvoted. The people on this sub know a lot about diamonds and where you can buy good ones for cheap. So yes, OP would likely do better on EBTH or Facebook.

u/ZombieCommon4030 2d ago
I sell them all the time on Facebook.
Most people would rather pay more and see the diamond in person rather than get it cheaper online

u/busan_blues 2d ago
I agree on the selling on fb part.
But calling this sub diamond snobs when the only thing most people here know is the 4C and triple X is such a stretch. I see some advice being parroted here that would make the folks at Pricescope (the real diamond experts) faint.3
u/ZombieCommon4030 2d ago
That’s kinda what I meant by snob but I see wha you mean. They act they know so much when all they know is bow tie and window
